SCOTUS Allows Virginia to Purge Suspected Noncitizens from Voter Rolls

SCOTUS allowing arbitrary PURGING of VA voter roles, because a GOP member 'said' there were illegal voters on it.

More

Comments

So tell me. Why is it that Democrats fail the truth test but adore to lie and hype? The individual in VA themselves did not say they were a citizen. Every voter should be required to prove their eligibility to vote. OK?

With Social Security data it is fairly easy. Democrats strangely still want illegals voting and populating our country and taking away your kids education and your healthcare and your Social Security.

Like they always say the quickest way to make a Republican is have a Democrat muggged or raped or spend hours in an under staffed over populated ER.

"The GOP-controlled Court's order is surprising because the federal law at issue in Beals, known as the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), is so clearly written.

It prohibits states from "systematically" removing "the names of ineligible voters from the official lists of eligible voters" within 90 days of a primary, or general election for federal offices.

Virginia began a purge of about 1,600 voters, who its top Republican officials claim are noncitizens, exactly 90 days before the upcoming election.

(A federal court later determined that some of the purged voters were, in fact, citizens.)"

'
This won't change the outcome in Blue VA, but it is perhaps the Rwing Court establishing precedents to use in other states.

This purge of non-citizens is due to a bipartisan Bill Tim Kaine signed into VA law.

Democrats WANT non-citizens voting in our elections.

Then it got contested and went to the Supreme Court.

#9 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2024-10-30 06:18 PM

We need as many self identified non-citizens on the voter roles as possible.
If these are truly citizens, they can show up and vote on election day by showing proof of citizenship and testifying to it by signature.

#17 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-10-31 08:42 AM

This case involved people who self-identified as non-citizens at DMV.
Youngkin was enforcing a law that was signed into law in 2006 by Tim Kaine, a Democrat.

First: They didn't self-identify as non-citizens. That's just stupid. There's a box on the form to check if you are a US Citizen. That box doesn't always get checked for any number of reasons. To say they "self-identified" means they took an active role in identifying themselves as non-citizens. That's quite an assumption and a statement.
Second: They used name matching, not necessarily the same person, and they didn't vet further to verify. They just purged.
Third: The law was passed and there are other laws that say you don't mess with things within a certain timeframe before an election - I believe in VA it's 60 days. They ignored that law completely and went full steam ahead with a half-assed purge.
Fourth: SCOUTUS has previously upheld laws restricting changes this close to an actual election. Almost always. That was before the Sharia Supremes corrupted the Courts and made "rule of law" a mockery.

Do you have any proof (other than a FaceBook meme) that any US citizen was actually purged from the voter rolls following this SCOTUS decision?

#19 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-10-31 09:04 AM

I'm not on Facebook.
I don't do "memes."
I don't make shht up.
I am not a Trumper.
I'm not a cultist.
I don't intentionally lie. (I do make mistakes).

To answer your question, yes. To answer your question "Do you have any proof (other than a FaceBook meme) that any US citizen was actually purged from the voter rolls" (and ignoring the "following this SCOTUS decision" since that just happened and is irrelevant)

Nadra Wilson of Lynchburg, Va., was concerned and confused when she received a letter in the mail from local election officials notifying her that her U.S. citizenship was in question.

But Wilson was puzzled by the letter. "I was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. " I'm a citizen," Wilson said in an interview with NPR before showing her American passport as proof.

www.npr.org

#20 | Posted by YAV at 2024-10-31 09:09 AM

"Wilson is among 1,600 Virginia voters who have been removed from the voter rolls since Aug. 7 because state officials suspected they were noncitizens. On Wednesday, the U.S. Supreme Court allowed Virginia's program to continue."

Turns out it's a National Law that SCOTUS blew right past:
"Under the National Voter Registration Act, during the 90 days before an election, states must pause certain kinds of voter list maintenance programs that systematically remove voters to ensure mistakes aren't made too close to the election. The so-called quiet period began this year on Aug. 7, the same day Youngkin issued his executive order."

"Trump has mischaracterized the Justice Department's lawsuit by claiming the agency is aiming to put "Illegal Voters" back on Virginia's rolls and "CHEAT" in the upcoming election. There is no evidence for the claim." (and the Trumpers repeat Trump's lie)

#21 | Posted by YAV at 2024-10-31 09:15 AM

"Another Virginia voter, 22-year-old Rina Shaw, who said she was born in the state, had not realized that her voter registration had been canceled until NPR asked her about her registration status and she checked it online."

#22 | Posted by YAV at 2024-10-31 09:16 AM

I don't intentionally lie. (I do make mistakes).

My mistake on the box, but not how error prone it is.

The DMV driver's license application has boxes at the very top, above the title, for people to indicate whether or not they are citizens. Olsen said "it just lends itself to people making mistakes or not seeing the information."

(I actually went to the form and looked at it. I think the confusion is in the "Mail In/DMV Connect Only" header.)

According to google, Virginia residents can register to vote at the polling booth on election day.

#24 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-10-31 09:25 AM

Which has nothing to do with what this article, the question you asked, or SCOTUS and VA have done.

#25 | Posted by YAV at 2024-10-31 09:26 AM

Also in the article I linked:

Because Virginia allows in-person voter registration through Election Day, there is still time for eligible voters to register and vote in the election.

Yet some Virginia voters who were removed in error may have missed the opportunity to request an absentee ballot.

Which makes me ask "If you received a mail-in ballot, you sent it in, and then you are purged, how do you get your vote to count?"

My point is IF they were booted of the rolls it's likely they didn't register properly - you know "check the US citizen box" they aren't going to turned away. They can still vote.

Plus, they can still register in person while early voting all the way up till Nov 2nd.

You want to make this some kind of tragedy but it isn't. It's always the exception with you, never the 99.9%.

Actually, I didn't even know about that one person, so it has nothing to do with a small number of cases (pretty rich coming from a member of a movement based on presenting exceptions as norms ... )

It's the fact that violating federal law and potentially disenfranchising voters because of a last minute voter roll purge of SUSPECTED non citizens is blatant election interference. Something y'all claim to be against.

The incorrectly purged. If 200 legal voters are purged, you're assuming 100% of them will be able to hurdle an additional requirement YOU DON'T HAVE TO HURDLE.

It's voter suppression, clear and simple.

Without a doubt, states who purge at this point will disenfranchise more voters than they've had voter fraud convictions over the last quarter century. The heritage foundation's website on voter fraud backs up my claim.

#53 | Posted by lfthndthrds at 2024-10-31 01:11 PM

I already answered that.

Which makes me ask "If you received a mail-in ballot, you sent it in, and then you are purged, how do you get your vote to count?"

I asked you last time why anyone should jump through more hoops right before election day to satisfy ballot purging that should have been done, by LAW, 90 days before the election day. What happens to anyone who doesn't get notified and doesn't fix the issue in time? They're purging up to election day. You pretend to know that anyone can cast a provisional ballot. Or that they'll know they can register the same day as they vote. So let's take that case, not the mail-in issue (which was described above for one case, and another case, they're too late to get a ballot mailed to them with the purge). The case where you think someone can just walk in and cast a provisional ballot by reregistering. They'd have to know to bring the required information/documentation for registration with them. They have to be at the right location to register. On Election day there's only one place you can register: your precinct. You are putting a lot of work on election volunteers and voters all for no good reason.

Oh there is a reason, though. So Youngkin can look MAGA to idiots and pretend he's actually doing something.

What a joke.

#54 | Posted by YAV at 2024-10-31 02:22 PM

While it did not affect a large number of potentially eligible voters the linked article had a lot of things wrong. The claim they identified as not eligible in itself is a twisting of facts. The fact is it could disenfranchise voters even though there is same day voter registration is in fact a thing. That it happened at exactly the minimum limit is so GOP too.

It's just more partisan legislation that creates more problems than it solves.

None of your weak arse excuses justify blatantly violating federal election laws.

Federal law prohibits states from engaging in "systematic" list maintenance within 90 days of a federal election to ensure that eligible voters aren't removed once it's too late for many to re-register.

#61 | Posted by donnerboy at 2024-10-31 03:24 PM

Nope. They have to have the right documentation. On election day, they can only go to the precinct that matches the address on any id that they may have with them. They can not register anywhere else.
