Three weeks ago, a right-winger in Canada sold everything he owned and moved his family to Russia. He said he wanted to protect his children from left-wing woke ideology. But things aren't going so well for them in Putin's Paradise.

Christian family moved to Russia to escape LGBTQ, trans, but it's not turning out exactly as they had planned.

"Comment Award goes to Laughing Gravy:

"I'll bet back home they used to whine about immigrants who don't know the language, who have no money, who expect the government to hand them a house and a job, and who complain when they don't get everything they want."

This is just so Precious!

I bet a lot of Trumpers would love to move to Russia.

Say, we could start a GoFundMe to help them!

"We've hit the first snag where you have to engage logic in this country and it's very, very frustrating."

Shoulda been using logic long before that, eh?

Interestingly, Russia does not appear on this map of countries that criminalize LGBT+ people or behavior:

#10 | Posted by sentinel at 2024-02-21 07:50 AM | Reply

Russia's Supreme Court has banned the "LGBT Movement" as "extremist."
Russia routinely goes after LGBT protests and parades, breaking heads, arms and legs.
Russia skirts things by not making specific "law" against, but then creates laws "protecting children" from "propaganda."
Then they go off and beat, imprison, and kill gay and bisexual men. From your own provided site:
www.humandignitytrust.org

I'm sure you didn't mean to be a Putin apologist, Russian action revisionist, nor were you intentionally gaslighting.

Russia obviously isn't a very LGBBQT friendly country, but it's obviously not in the same league as countries which criminalize and even have the death penalty for homosexual behavior.

#12 | Posted by sentinel at 2024-02-21 09:54 AM | Reply

Russia's no Uganda, true.
To really f**k up a country over LGBT rights (even the right to live) takes American religious right-wingers pushing legislation with capital punishment in those countries.

Let me quote from the link I provided:

"United Nations experts demanded on Thursday that Chechnya halt the abduction, detention, beating and killing of gay and bisexual men, after weeks of reports about violent repression there."

(probably one of the reasons this dear sweet "christian" family wanted to move to Russia)

#15 | Posted by YAV at 2024-02-21 10:33 AM | Reply

The Islamic republic of Chechnya, which makes up 0.1% of the Federation, is not representative of Russia. They can barely control it, and usually ignore it unless it goes against them.

As for the parades and protests Russia treats them consistently with all other unauthorized parades and protests. Just like PRChina will violently put down anything that's not state sponsored.

#15, unless you have evidence to back that up, it says a lot more about your character than it does about that family.

More from the cited article...

... Yeah, if there's one place that's just not safe for kids, it's Canada. Russia would be soooo much safer.

So Arend (and wife Anneesa) sold everything they had to move to sunny Russia and raise eight of their nine kids with "orthodox" values. They also gladly took donations on their social media platform from fellow right-wingers, all so they could live in Vladimir Putin's wonderland. Russian officials assured them that they would work with them to get them established, and even help them get a farm. They did all of this just three weeks ago; long story short, they lived happily ever after.

Except they didn't. ...

If you actually at their YouTube channel, the article is quite dishonest and misleading. Regardless of what of you think of their socio-political beliefs, or if you think they are foolish and gullible, they are doing something much braver than many if not most here would ever do. It is not easy integrating into a new culture.

Given that they are from Canada, the climate is a good fit for them. They can keep it.

What is difficult to understand about it? The article is misrepresenting the degree of their frustrations and circumstances. Their bank account was flagged when random people started sending donations to it. The wife was venting a little bit when it happened, but the banking issue has already been resolved.

You idiot. The father comes right out and says that their children aren't safe because of the LGBQT and trans people in Canada.

"Well, Canada's not the same country it used to be and we didn't feel safe for our children there and in the future anymore. Lots of "left-wing ideology" LGBTQ, Trans, ah, a lot of things we don't agree with."

It is literally the first thing he says.

So when is the husband being sent to the frontlines?

#27 | Posted by Sycophant at 2024-02-22 09:45 AM | Reply

Non-citizens can't be conscripted in Russia. Of course, if he ends up in prison, he could end up in some mercenary unit like Wagner. My guess is unless he does something really stupid, that won't happen. He's worth more to the Kremlin as propaganda than is he is as just another body to throw in the meat grinder. Same reason Snowden is unlikely to be sent to the front line.

Oh, so you read all that into what I wrote.
Just like you read "hoax" into a headline that wasn't there, but was the first word in the tweet by Diaz DOE of Florida when he got called out for not doing his job.
Got it.

I believe that the strong anti-LGBTQ actions by Putin and the Kremlin and state agents, the ruling by the courts, the refusal to stop the beatings and murder of gay and bisexual people are all things that contributed to this family moving to Russia. Absolutely. It's right there in his own words. Gays and Lesbians, Trans people - they are all dangerous. So dangerous he packed up his entire family and moved to RUSSIA.

#32 | Posted by YAV at 2024-02-22 11:23 AM | Reply

I fully support his actions and highly recommend everyone who is homophobic or transphobic to also move to Russia.

Bon voyage!

#34 - I've reconsidered. Given how much work White religious fundamentalists have done in crafting legislation to kill LGBTQ folk in African nations, you're right. They should all pack up and move there, too. Especially ------ like Scott Lively. www.vanityfair.com

#36 | Posted by YAV at 2024-02-22 05:37 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

Oh, and he's busy other places, like RUSSIA: "Scott Lively, who claims to have inspired Russia's "gay propaganda" law, has a starring role in an antigay "documentary" film as a gift from Russia with love for hatred of LGBT people, according to Mother Jones."
