Yeah, it is an old tune (some might say ancient) but the lyrics are important.

...
He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

His snowy hair was so much whiter
Beneath the candle glow
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago

You'd hear the patter of his feet
As he came toddling down the street
His smile would hide a lonely heart you see
If there were sweethearts in the park
He'd pass a lamp and leave it dark
Remembering the days that used to be

For he recalls when dreams were new
He loves someone who loves him too
Who walks with him alone in memory
He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter of long, long ago

Now if you look up at the sky
You'll understand the reason why
The little stars at night are all aglow
He turns them on when night is here
He turns them off when dawn is near
The little man we loved of long ago

He made the night a little brighter
Wherever he would go
The old lamplighter
Of long, long ago...

... and for those current aliases who reference me as gaslighter, I look at that as a compliment.
(prolly to your surprise)

The Ole Lamplighter was lighting up the gas lamps along the streets, the street lights of yore.

The Call - I Don't Wanna (1987)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt...

genius.com

...
I ain't here to hold you when you cry
I ain't here to hold your shaky hand
I ain't here to look you in the eye
Or beg for you to understand
I ain't gonna walk you thru your dreams
Walk you thru this life that we all know
I ain't here to listen while you speak
I ain't here to heal your broken soul
Am I here at all?

I ain't here to tell you what you need
I ain't gonna take a noble stand
I ain't here to look you in the eye
Or beg for you to understand
I can only tell you what I've seen
I can only tell you how it felt
When my heart was crushed so bad inside
Till I felt the hatred slowly melt
I don't wanna
...

A powerful song, imo.

Well, FWIW, I care.

MonkeyBars, before speaking ask yourself "What would L. Ron Hubbard do?"

My moniker was chosen because everybody agrees my views are intelligent, rational and mainstream. Only extremist nutjobs seem to have a problem with it.

(Everyone should give me a newsworthy for this post.)

My moniker did NOT come from the rib restaurant chain nor the former Cowboys quarterback.

It's an homage to the Miami-based, living on a boat, private eye Frank Sinatra played in a couple late 60s movies, Tony Rome. I changed the last letter of his surname to the first letter of my own, hence tonyroma - all lower case.

My moniker wasn't the 15th here as my Seniority shows; there were quite a few here already, and many of us used different monikers... and each other's, lol.

The fun bad old wild west days before Marshal Dillon, er, I mean, Marshall Cadenhead cleaned up the town, and rightly so; you couldn't tell who was who, but nowadays if it's a sockpuppet, it's a rwinger who masochistically enjoys deserved abuse.

Gal and Mao were here already (Mao now posts as GracieAmazed!) quite a few others, too.

And my moniker, as those folks know, is my Dad's nickname that he got as a kid from the Gasoline Alley comic strip and then movie character. Presumably because he got into a lot of trouble as the character did.

All this time I thought it was an homage to Chris Burke's character Corky Thatcher, in Life Goes On.

The truth is I never heard of him until after I had signed up. Dad was Corky to everyone. His brother, the Big Injun, was called Bud (as in brother).

Or officially L.C., as his real name was Loyal Columbus, and that was like a family secret, lol.

I see that the use of words in English is still a challenge for you... self-importance seems to be your bailiwick, actually.

Good to know.... I always thought "Corky" came from the TV show "Tales of the Gold Monkey". "Corky" was the hero's sidekick ... the only mechanic within a thousand miles who could keep the Cutter's Goose in flying condition.

The Browns brother and sisters act, whose song you referenced The Old Lamplighter, had strong Christian roots and often sang of faith and family.

Being a Christian myself, I can't but suspect their reference to light in this song would likely have been double entendre for usage of lamps and light in the Bible.

Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Matthew 5:14-16: "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

They would have seen the concept of "lighting the way for others" as symbolic since they came from a Christian background.

The concept of Christianity being light in a dark world has a great deal of historical cultural significance for Christians.

There are those who believe that "light" is what attracts so much attention and hatred.

btw...for those who put more stock into things quoted from Jesus, He also said,

Matthew 5:13: "You are the salt of the earth."

When I joined the DR, the western movie "Shane" (1953) was playing on TV in the background. I thought, yeah, that's a great handle.

And a great movie too.
