The Democratic presidential nominee, Vice-President Kamala Harris, announced a plan to provide long-term, at-home care services through Medicare, the public health insurance program for Americans older than 65.

The announcement is part of the Harris campaign's effort to focus on the "sandwich generation" -- or the more than 105 million Americans who care for parents, children or both, it said.

Today, Medicare typically covers at-home care only in "post-acute" settings, such as when a person is recovering from a surgery.

"Harris said the cost of the program would be paid for with expanded Medicare prescription drug negotiations and limiting payments to pharmacy benefit managers " the middle men in the US's drug supply system.

Medicare completed its first negotiations with drug makers this year. The CBO estimates prescription drug negotiations will save the government $98.5bn over a decade. "

Finally... Robson will get the care he needs!

I look forward to the discussions on this topic.

Given that the main supporters of the GOP may be the senior citizens of the Country, why would VP Harris want to proffer a proposal that seems to cater to them?

Kamala Harris may be the first Democratic presidential nominee to win seniors since Al Gore
But who knows?

@#3 ... But who knows? ...

From the September 2024 article in @3 ...

... We've heard a lot about the groups of voters that Kamala Harris seems to be struggling with " or at least not doing as well as Joe Biden did with them four years ago. Yet, the vice president has a small national edge over Donald Trump. How is that possible?

It turns out that Harris is also doing particularly well for a Democrat among groups with whom recent presidential nominees of her party have fared poorly.

One such group is senior citizens. Harris may be the first Democrat to carry voters aged 65 and older since Al Gore in 2000.

Take a look at the recent national polls. The CNN/SSRS poll out this week found Harris leading the former president 50% to 46% among senior citizens. Our survey is not an outlier. The average poll has Harris up by 3 points over Trump among seniors.

This is a marked turnaround from before Biden dropped out of the race in July and from the final estimates from 2020. Both the polling average from earlier this year and the post-election findings from 2020 had Trump up by 4 points over Biden among voters who were 65 or over. ...

This would be preferable for most who need long term care.

Wow from that awesome article...

... When my uncle was elected President, I recognized what a highly privileged position I would be in. I would have some access to the White House. And as long as that was true, I wanted to make sure I used that access for something positive. I was eager to champion something my wife, Lisa, and I were deeply passionate about, something we lived every day: the challenges for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

Our son William, our third child, was born on June 30, 1999. Within 24 hours, he went from seemingly healthy to fighting for his life in the NICU. Raising him was different from the start. William was diagnosed at three months with infantile spasms, a rare seizure disorder which in William's case altered his development physically and cognitively. We had so many questions: What would the future hold for someone like William? How far could he go? How much could he learn? Would he ever have the chance to do the things that other children do?

We just didn't know. It took 15 years before his medical team could accurately pinpoint the cause of his condition: a KCNQ2 mutation, a genetic misfire that the doctors called a potassium channel deletion.

In our journey with William, Lisa and I had become close to some truly inspiring parents and dedicated advocates who were doing amazing work to improve the day-to-day reality for families like ours. It's a huge lift for caregivers, not to mention the constant need to mitigate expenses. ...

Dear Americans,

No, you can't have this because f**k you.

Sincerely,

The GOP.

Greatly needed. I live as a senior in low income senior and disabled housing, and the programs are poorly funded and residents are told that they live in an apartment complex, not a facility with day to day help, of course. I have seen stuff that is kind of mind boggling, like a blind 90 year old living alone, trying to get things done from her wheel chair. I have seen folks with greatly limited mobility from CP trying to get by, falling and lying on the floor until someone might come on by.
The rich live with assistance, the very poor live with luck.

Who really would benefit most by this? The children of elderly parents who can no longer care for themselves. FYI, I can still take care of myself, I live alone and can still walk over 5 miles per day. My little dog Joey will testify under oath to reaffirm that claim.

This would certainly help them but it goes further. In my case I have no children so when I am elderly, I have no one to look after me other than my wife... Even people with kids often don't have that benefit. My elderly neighbor's only son lives an hour and a half away for just one example. I look after both my mother and uncle - I only can do so much for them though. I would have my mother move in but she doesn't want that and my uncle - just not going to even offer long story.

Harris Announces Plan for Medicare: Long-Term Care at Home

The abysmal performance of the nursing home industry during the covid-19 pandemic, coupled with high costs, has torn its --- with the federal medical care appropriators. More and more it seems that legislators are trying to find alternatives to institutionalizing patients. This is good for patients as well as the federal treasury.
