Probably a good move, their models have become so similar over the last 15 years.

From a business sense this might make sense, but I wonder what the parts of such a joint venture vehicle would be in implementation. I could guess at some complicated trickle down effects when it comes to maintenance and repair.

What Caused the Crisis at Nissan and Could a Merger With Honda Fix It? (December 11, 2024)
www.bnnbloomberg.ca

... Nissan Motor Co. is fighting for its life, again, and it may seek the help of another Japanese carmaker. Honda Motor Co. and Nissan are exploring a potential merger to pool resources in an alliance that could rival Toyota Motor Corp.

Nissan, one of the Japan's flagship brands, is on the brink after weak sales in the US and China triggered a huge profit slump that left top brass with little choice but to cut jobs, slash a fifth of the carmaker's manufacturing capacity and lower its annual profit forecast.

Nissan's last crisis was about 25 years ago and was remedied by French carmaker Renault SA stepping in with a cash injection and dispatching "Le Cost Killer" Carlos Ghosn, who orchestrated a dramatic turnaround. The good times didn't last and tensions mounted between some top Nissan executives and Ghosn.

This led to Ghosn's dramatic arrest in 2018 and detention for suspected financial crimes, and his ouster from Nissan. Before facing trial, Ghosn slipped out of Japan in late 2019 hidden in a case for audio equipment that was loaded onto a private jet. He fled to Lebanon where he found sanctuary. Ghosn said he was the victim of a conspiracy among Nissan executives and escaped what he called Japan's "rigged" justice system.

What is Nissan's current financial position? ....

So... Honda seems to be the predator, and Nissan seems to be the prey.

What does Honda want from a possible Nissan (formerly known as Datsun) purchase?

Japanese car makers are now dealing with South Korean car makers who make less expensive cars with much better warranties.

Both badges have significant US manufacturing facilities, so they would avoid the Dotard's tariff threats. both seem interested in hybrid vehicles (also Toyota's strategy), which many US consumers seem to like. The wife and I have driven six Hondas in the past 40 years and loved them all. The Nissan we had--not so much...

Do or die for Nissan. They are near bankruptsy.

I had a first gen Altima, still had "stanza" stamped on the back, in college. Put 300k miles on it with no major breakdowns. Gave it to my aunt and she drove it for 5 more years.
Then they started making cars in Jackson, MS using low educated hicks and every car they have produced since then is trash. They've supplanted Dodge as the go-to car maker for people with bad credit and worse driving habits.

Two good companies, imo. They've both wavered, at times, but they both make good stuff.

Nissan needs to stick with small chassis 4x4 with a focus on reliability over comfort at a reasonable price.

These should be combustion engines.

Both companies are headed down the drain if they don't hurry up and ditch the obsolete combustion engines. Only an idiot would buy a new ICE car in 2024.

!!!!!!

Wow. Good cars. I drove my Hondas into the ground, and still, someone was willing to pay cash for them.

Well, there is the tariff thing upcoming. Musk was able to get a 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars so Tesla could stay in business, and if that tariff is on cars built outside of the US, a merger might not help.
