Critics of the new legislation, including Rep. Jerry Nadler, of New York, say the bill sweeps too broadly and would chill constitutionally protected free speech, including legitimate criticism of Israel.

This bill puts this IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism into law:

"Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."

The F does that mean? It's sooo vague. Can I oppose Yigal Amir and Michael Sheinbein assassins or is that anti-Semitic?

Samuel Sheinbein. Not sure who Michael is.
Jewish names all look the same to me. Oops is that anti-Semitic too...

The new definition of Antisemitism:

"Any opposition to, criticism of, or consequences for a nuclear-armed genocidal apartheid ethno-state which is backed and armed by the most powerful empire that has ever existed."

Funny thing is I THINK most Americans are vehemently against anti-semitism, but don't support Israel's aggressive policies of land grabs and aparthied

"most Americans are vehemently against anti-semitism"

Most Americans cannot define the term without a fear that their actions (or even thoughts) would end up falling under the resultant definition.

And that fear is expected and counted upon by those who gatekeep the term.

Anti-Israel is not antisemitism. They can claim whatever they want, it doesn't change that reality.

A semite is:www.britannica.com people who spoke the Semite language, including Jews and Arabs. So a country, say Israel, that locks up Arabs behind concrete and bullets in the Occupied Territories, is aggressively antisemitic.

#11 | Posted by Hughmass at 2024-05-02 02:33 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 3

Yes, most people are totally unaware that Semite refers to a group linked by the origins and characteristics of their languages and not necessarily by their cultural or racial heritage (although there's a lot of overlap there as well).

And to many who have had issues with Israel, much of it has to do with the Zionist movement, that is the idea that somehow all of what has historically been referred to as Palestine should be part of modern Israel. This is what's led to the illegal seizure of villages, mostly in the West Bank, by Israelis settlers who destroy what's was there and build modern communities, not unlike what you'd find in many places in the US. In fact, I've seen some pictures of these settlements on TV, and I swear they look like the neighborhood where we live in here in SoCal, except of course, we don't have 10-foot high barbed wire fencing topped with concertina or armed guards at the gates to our community. Note that even some very conservative Jewish groups don't subscribe to Zionism or what has come from that belief.

Be careful with "most" a significant segment of the US population is highly anti-semetic. I think it is in the minority but...

Gee,I wonder why?

Most people aren't studious enough to separate the Miscreants from the normal people just trying to get by. Most people unfortunately are lazy, morally and intellectually.

The Eternal Victims killing anyone who inconveniences their land grabs and collective punishment. Begging for more money and more appreciation every time they do something horrible. Create new anti semites every day.

People see this and recoil in disgust. Some become anti-semites because of moral outrage.

They don't think things through.

Judaism isn't the problem.

Rep. Nadler
@RepJerryNadler
Not even even 24 hours after passing a do-nothing bill under the guise of "fighting antisemitism," @SpeakerJohnson
drags out one of the oldest antisemitic tropes in world.

Now Republicans Are Blaming George Soros for Campus Protests

A number of Republicans are now suggesting--or in some cases, flat-out declaring--that George Soros, often the target of right-wing conspiracy theories, is funding the pro-Palestine protests on college campuses.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), during a NewsNation interview Wednesday, speculated that the billionaire philanthropist and Holocaust survivor was behind the unrest at universities like Columbia in New York, where the city's police department the day prior removed and arrested student protesters from a building they had broken into and occupied.

"I think the FBI needs to be all over this," Johnson said on The Hill. "They need to look at the root causes and find out if some of this was funded by--I don't know--George Soros or overseas entities. There's sort of a common theme and a common strategy that seems to be pursued in many of these campuses."

Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews," the definition says.

zionism is now legally defined anti-Semitism.

The real question is, 'what is the agreed upon definition of "Zionism"?' Because depending on who you ask the definitions seem to vary incredibly. For example, ask both an Israel lover and an Israel hater the definition.

#17 | Posted by moder8 at 2024-05-02 06:30 PM | Reply

It's irrelevant as all zionists believe that zionist = Jew. That core belief of zionism is enough to make it anti-Semitic under this definition as it fundamentally requires hatred toward Jews that are not zionist.

#18 | Posted by IndianaJones at 2024-05-02 06:34 PM | Reply

I disagree that zionist = Jew. I consider myself to be a "zionist", but I am not Jewish. I was brought up to understand that a zionist is simply a person who believes the State of Israel has the right to exist peacefully side by side with their neighbors. It is people like you who add on all these other meanings to the term that make it defined as something other than what it is.

Overview
Main article: Types of Zionism
The common denominator among all modern Zionists is a claim to Palestine, a land traditionally known in Jewish writings as the Land of Israel ("Eretz Israel") as a national homeland of the Jews and as the legitimate focus for Jewish national self-determination.[40] It is based on historical ties and religious traditions linking the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.[41] Zionism does not have a uniform ideology, but has evolved in a dialogue among a plethora of ideologies: General Zionism, Religious Zionism, Labor Zionism, Revisionist Zionism, Green Zionism, etc.

- From the Wikipedia page on Zionism.

So I say again, given that the term has "evolved in a dialogue among a plethora of ideologies", what is our agreed upon definition of "zionism" for purposes of this thread? I suspect we are NOT coming to this conversation from the same understanding.

In this case, I agree with you, M8. Israel has to exist. I'm not Jewish. I'm a Zionist Goyim.

Bernie Sanders on the meaning of Zionism:

Biden has described himself as a Zionist, but these days that has become a loaded word. Some say they are not antisemites, but they're anti-Zionist. As a Jewish lawmaker himself, how does Sanders define Zionism?

"I don't sit around worrying about what the word means. All I know is that right now in Israel, you have an extreme right-wing government, which includes some out-and-out racists, period," he said. "Hamas is a terrorist organization that started this war. Israel had the right to defend itself, but it does not have the right to go to war against the entire Palestinian people."

All that creating such special privilege for some people and demographics does is expand resentment. Resentment is a natural human reaction to special favoritism which has been around in humankind for eternity. This law only fosters more group resentment. How many people will vote for any group that cant be criticized. Why do politicians adore creating divide? Perhaps they view it as a sneaky way to deflect and benefit their own.

From what I've read about this law it looks like it violates 1A.

The one area where we consistently see bipartisanship is when government expands its powers or tramples our liberties.

All of the worlds so called cultures and peoples are subject to criticism. Why would any be excluded? To give any group special treatment such as immunity is absurd and racist.
