"The White House has demanded the oldest university in the US make changes to hiring, admissions and teaching practices which it says will help fight antisemitism on campus.

Since returning to office, Trump has pushed to reshape top universities by threatening to withhold federal funds that are mostly designated for research.

Harvard became the first major US university to reject his administration's demands on Monday, accusing the White House of trying to "control" its community.

In a Tuesday morning post on social media, Trump threatened to go beyond withholding the federal funds and targeted Harvard tax-exempt status."

""Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting "Sickness?" he wrote on Truth Social. "Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!"

Losing the exemption could cost Harvard millions of dollars each year.

Later on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump wanted the university to apologize for what his administration says is continuing tolerance of antisemitism.

"[Trump] wants to see Harvard apologize, and Harvard should apologize," Leavitt said."

"Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions -- rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to make sure all students at Harvard can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect," Obama posted on X late Monday.

"Let's hope other institutions follow suit."

"The White House has demanded"

Republicans don't see any problem with the government dictating every aspect of how private companies run their business.

Quite the opposite, they think it's been a long time coming.

Honestly, I'm fine with this. And then when the next Democratic president gets in office, we can start taxing the churches as well. Win win!

Same for all those right-wingnut Christian churches. No tax-exempt status for them too. I mean if we're talking about serving the public's interest that would be fair.

Harvard is telling Trump to take a flying leap. With that massive endowment, Harvard can afford the risk. This is the beginning of a much-needed pushback against this regime's bullying tactics.

@#1 ... "Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting "Sickness?" he wrote on Truth Social. ...

Now do the tax-exempt status of right-wing Christian Churches.

Should their pushing of a political agenda mean that they should lose the tax-exempt status for their Church and , e.g., the bowling alleys they build?

Futuristic church with 12-lane bowling alley, 7 giant domes and an observation tower opens its doors to the public (2014)

... The Bridge will satisfy the need for family entertainment in the western part of Birmingham, he said. "We believe we can really meet the needs of the community," Moore said. "It will bridge people from the world to the kingdom. People may not want to come to a church, but they'll come to a bowling alley. People have needs other than spiritual needs. There's a need for safe, clean, uplifting, family-oriented entertainment."

While it's been open for more than a year, the recreation complex of six interconnected domes known as The Bridge will have an open house on Saturday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to unveil it to the broader community.

"Now we want the world to know," said Moore, who founded Faith Chapel in his home in 1981. "Our church wants to be an inspiration."

The roll-out of the bowling alley and other facilities to people beyond the church membership has been intentionally deliberate as the church tried to navigate the logistics of running such a massive recreational center. "We didn't have the staffing in place," Moore said. "We were trying to get to the point we can handle everyone who wants to come." ...

You apparently are a typical leftist who thinks average Americans should borrow to attend the neighborhood community college while approved foreign born tribsters of approved politics and ethnicity get admitted and aid to attend Harvard.

Not a dime of our tax money should subsidize and help non native born non Americans get a leg up on an Ivy League education. We need incentives to make Americans strive and better off not to make Harvard better off.

Kennedy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Over 150 Nobel Prize winners have been associated with the university as alumni, researchers or faculty. ...

The WikiPedia article then goes into details, citing each person, and how that person contributed to society.

It's a long, very long, list, and I don't want to take to time to transcribe the table format presented to this site's text-oriented format.

Why? Why don't you see any value in investing some small amount in our global neighbors?

They are what makes us great.

It's a good investment.

OpEd: The Populist GOP and its Yale Law and Harvard Law Leaders (July 2024)
reason.com

... The nomination of J.D. Vance as the Republican party's Vice-Presidential candidate in the upcoming election brings up an interesting contrast. On one hand, today's GOP embraces a heavy dose of populism. It's pretty standard for Republican politicians to rail against elites who are against the average Joe. On the other hand, if you look at the younger generation of GOP leaders, the politicians who are likely to lead the party in coming years, there sure are a lot of Harvard Law School and Yale Law School graduates.

J.D. Vance is one example. He's a graduate of Yale Law School, Class of 2013. But think of other possible future GOP Presidential candidates. There's Senator Joshua Hawley, Yale Law Class of 2006. And lots of Harvard Law grads are in the mix. We have Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Harvard Law Class of 2005 (sort of a crossover, as he went to Yale for college). And Senator Ted Cruz, Harvard Law Class of 1995, where he went after college at Princeton. And there's also Senator Tom Cotton, Harvard Law Class of 2002. I'm probably forgetting others.

It seems worth asking, how is it that the GOP has embraced both populism and a set of prominent figures, at least among the younger generation, who are Harvard Law and Yale Law graduates? Or maybe more specifically, why is it that going to an elite law school seems to be a significant advantage within the GOP? ...

Harvard is a part of the American Excellence, for far longer than the United States has been a country..

An excellence that Pres Trump, for some odd reason, wants to actively destroy.

Why?

Federal aid, including Pell Grants and federal student loans, is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

However, if Harvard, as a private institution, wants to spend its own money to subsidize the education of foreign students, why shouldn't they be able to do so?

Why does Harvard or any other major university get any semblance of tax free status so they can implememet a policy of admitting 30% of students as foreign nationals. For tax free status their enrollment should be totally focused on educating USA citizens and not foreigners. The most disgusting part in all this is giving any anti USA part credibility.

It's because foreign nationals that get into Harvard tend to make America a better place than your average American does.

Face it: Our country has seen decades of middle class economic decline because D and R politicians focused on lobbyist policies that resulted in more for other countries and themselves and less for average USA citizens.

Much is because we dole out dual citizenship benefits to foreigners who get benefits and admission to Harvard while average Americans get nothing. Dual citizenship needs ended now including AIPAC! Only USA citizens need to benefit. My first and only sticky of decades ago stated exactly that.
