Pres Trump seems to be bringing the US closer to Russia and isolating the US from its decades-long allies.

Why?

My guess might also be that the NATO allies had a real concern that if Pres Trump got them involved in the war, then Pres Trump could just walk away from his war, leaving our NATO allies stuck with finishing it.

Given that Pres Trump currently seems to be desperately looking for an off-ramp away from the war he started, I no longer think the above scenario is all that far-fetched.
