FRANKLIN, TN conservative David French: "I've changed my perception of the lingering severity of race problems. We adopted a child from Ethiopia- maybe naive: didn't think she'd have a different experience than our older kids. There wasn't a school she wasn't called the N word."

"Make me wanna holler, throw up both my hands ... " " Marvin Gaye from "Inner City Blues"

In the fifth chapter of the book of Jeremiah, the prophet scorns "foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see." As a self-described evangelical who writes frequently about religion, New York Times columnist David French is probably well acquainted with that verse. He is also likely to know the following proverb: "There are none so blind as those who will not see."

What French may not understand is how snugly those admonitions fit him.

French, who is white, went viral last week after his appearance on a podcast called the Fifth Column. Asked if he considers himself a conservative, he answered in the affirmative, but then went on to describe how, despite that political affiliation, he has "Absolutely changed in my perception of the lingering severity of race problems in this country." This sudden enlightenment fell on him, he explained, after he adopted a child from Ethiopia.

"This might sound super nave, but when we adopted our youngest daughter, I did not have in my mind that she was going to come to my community and have a substantially different experience as a child than my two older kids. But by golly, she had a substantially different experience. There was not a school that she went to where she was not called the N-word repeatedly."

He went on to tell a story about a time the abuse went beyond language. "There was a point," he said, "where I picked her up after a high school football game " this was in Nashville at a game at Montgomery Bell Academy, one of the highest end schools in all of middle Tennessee. This is a very wealthy school. We went to pick her up and she was shaking, and her friend, who was a Latina, was shaking as well and it was like, 'What happened?' And she said, 'A truck full of guys was screaming the N-word at us and drove straight for us and they just swerved away at the very last second.'"

French said that raising this African child caused him to realize, "all of a sudden," that he had "been in a bubble and that my white, educated, upper-middle class bubble in the South had really, intentionally, screened out racism."

But then, I'm black which means I'm a native of that other America. White conservatives, on the other hand, typically find it impossible to imagine themselves into any America other than the one they know - which is to say, into the lives and challenges of people who are not like them, unless one of those people happens to have a seat at the dinner table. Remember in the early 2000s how Dick Cheney, the former vice president, towed the conservative line on every litmus test issue, but broke ranks with his fellow travelers over marriage equality? It was absolutely not coincidental that his daughter Mary was a lesbian.

Yes, it's great that he was willing to go against his own in order to support his child, but make no mistake: that's not conscience and it's not principle. It's self interest. It's a statement that bad things don't matter until they touch you and yours.

And that, at bottom, is the statement David French just made.

It makes you worry for his daughter. His ideological predisposition will likely render him next to useless to her as she navigates the gauntlet of race in America. Yes, he can assure that she is loved, and that's not nothing. But practical advice or even a relevant explanation of what she's going through? Don't bet on it. How can you explain a country you've only just discovered yourself? His daughter will be forced to figure that out on her own. She will have no other option.

See, blindness is a choice some of us don't get to make.

All Whites are racist, this is well known, ask any minority.

You think as a liberal you're immune, nah you're all racist.

The only question how racist are you relative to the rest of us?

Its not Stupid, it's Denial.

The Same Denial that drove the SCOTUS to end voting protections because "Racism Isn't a factor in American life anymore".

The Justice's live in ideological bubbles and also have an Agenda...

White makes Right.

Clarence Thomas is just Corrupt and Stupid.

Mostly Corrupt.

Typical Republican.

Refuses to believe what everyone has been telling them their whole lives, until it affects them personally.

This is the same Republican mindset that believes most claims of sexual assault are lies, told by women who had sex they regret, or trying to get over on a rich man like Trump.

That poor kid.
Imagine sticking out like a sore thumb in this country but also being told the racism you experience isn't real.
Then again, all girls of Republican parents get told that the sexism they experience isn't really a big deal.

So you are a white dude.

Where do you really live now that you're dropping the facade?

A vast majority of my friends are black. I got to a black church (I'm the only white dude there.) If you get into a close friendship with blacks, they will flat out tell you that the most bigotry they experience is from that 20% of the black population they call "N-----s" They are like adults who were abused as children but never dealt with it. The N's in school will bully other blacks who get good grades, "You trying to be white?"

My mostly white church (although all races were members) 30 years ago, we did a program to help inner city blacks once a week....the kids would sometimes show up out of breath because "we had to escape the gang member again telling us 'don't get help from whitey' ".

Here's a black comedian, addressing this VERY thing to a 100% black audience...just notice the reactions...oh and you can pull up the same video title and notice all the "black" reaction videos and they 100% agree as well.

As far as the kid from Ethiopia, one black close friend of mine, in fact we joke we were twins separated at birth, said that kids in school from Africa would call other American blacks "slaves." Bigotry comes in IN MANY FORMS.

AND TO BALANCE THINGS OUT...HERE'S A COMEDY VIDEO MAKING FUN OF US HONKEY CRACKERS...LOL by black Dj Z-Flo

Who had the work story about the one black guy called the other black guy "brother."

The other black guy, being fresh off the boat from Africa, responds "You are not my brother. I came here a free man. Your people came here in chains."

And before someone says anything, the above I posted in NO WAY DENIES THE WHITE BIGOTRY TOWARDS BLACKS IN ANY WAY WHATSOEVER.... Whites subjugated not just blacks, but American Indians as well...and we seem to forget about the Indians (I have yet to find one of my Indian friends, and I am part Indian myself--Powhatan tribe to be precise, who refer to themselves as "Native Americans.") So don't take my sh*t out of context please...well you will anyways so I really don't give a flying f*ck actually. I know what my experience is, and I know the experiences of hundreds and hundreds of blacks that I've worked with personally. Yes, white bigotry...but also black bigotry as well...they just don't talk about it with whitey...well, until that comedian in the post above did LOL.....

I guess the point is, bigotry comes in many forms. Hell, my very close friend who happens to be both gay and black, and raised in Louisiana said, "I really didn't experience many problems in high school...it wasn't until college...and holy fuck ...the in-fighting within the LGBTQ community is INSANE on college campuses..." Or even within the white community, the bigotry that the Irish experienced in America. Or go to Japan, and watch how they react to blacks IN CERTAIN REGIONS...

What I do NOT want is for everyone to end up with grey skin....despite the bigotry, there's also a sense of most of use get along .... just go to your local store or gas station...you'll see a white guy hold the door for a black guy and vice-versa...and personally I find BEAUTY in all races, cultures, etc. I mean, I'm a white Nerd...and I was prejudiced against in school...boys putting their crotch in my face and saying "SUCK IT FAGGOT GEEK" etc... entire school bus singing made up songs about me etc.... but hey, the very thing they made fun of is my strength... and they were just kids...they didn't understand..

JUST LIKE THE REPUBLICAN MENTIONED ABOVE DIDN'T UNDERSTAND ABOUT RACISM AT THE TIME....so why bash him??? Why not f*cking celebrate that HE UNDERSTANDS NOW!!! I swear, some of you folks will bitch about anything, even if the person you're bitching about finally comes to a better understanding about things....'

"Why not f*cking celebrate that HE UNDERSTANDS NOW!!! I swear, some of you folks will bitch about anything"

Fair point.

Still, I wouldn't hold my breath that his insight results in any sort of move-the-needle corrective action.

David Brooks is a Republican who did a huge multi part write up on how blind Whites are to their racism. The net result is Trump got elected twice.
