Led by President Trump, the Republican Party has disgracefully embraced white Christian nationalists and is working to turn back the clock on progress America has made in the struggle against racism and other bigotry. Some 83 percent of Black voters are Democrats or lean Democratic, according to the Pew Research Center. Because of this, Trump has demanded Republican officials make it harder for African Americans to vote and elect candidates of their choosing. Trump has repeatedly insulted Black people who criticize him by calling them "low-IQ" and with other slurs about their intelligence, such as referring to then-Vice President Kamala Harris as "dumb," "mentally unfit," "slow" and "stupid" when she ran against him in 2024. Trump even outrageously posted an AI-generated racist video on the social media site he owns that portrayed Barack and Michelle Obama " America's only Black president and first lady " as apes.
