JD Vance Spreads Outrageous Lie About Haitian Immigrants

Former President Donald Trump and Sen. JD Vance have made anti-immigrant hate the centerpiece of their campaign for the White House, and that campaign stooped to a new low Monday. Vance amplified bogus "reports" that "people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country." First of all, the claim is false: There are no credible reports that "people who shouldn't be in this country" are eating pets.

The false claim is part of Trump and his supporters' yearslong pattern of painting immigrants with a broad brush as rapists and murders, even invoking the fictional film "Gangs of New York and the fictional serial killer and cannibal Hannibal Lecter - whom Trump has invoked nonstop in recent months to describe immigrants.

These claims about immigrants being especially prone to crime run counter to all available data, which show that immigrants break fewer laws than Americans who were born here.

The lies are all part of Trump and Vance's justification for pitching a "mass deportation" of millions of people, which by their and their advisers' own admission would involve a "bloody" police state and huge processing camps.

Does it really need to be said that this blog should not be a vehicle to stoke bigotry and hatred based on intentional lies, especially with this nation's democracy at risk in the coming presidential election?
BREAKING: An Ohio woman has allegedly killed and eaten a cat in front of shocked neighbors.

"Ohio woman" means "woman who is currently physically present in Ohio"?
Because this woman is Haitian, and is just doing exactly what Haitians do

More from the cited article...

... What Is Vance Actually Talking About?

The Trump campaign did not respond to HuffPost's questions. But it appears Vance was responding to a collection of rumors and baseless internet posts related to immigrants living in Ohio -- all breathlessly amplified by Trump-aligned social media accounts.

In one instance, a social media post purportedly from Springfield, Ohio, that's been making the rounds includes the claim that the unnamed poster's neighbor's daughter's friend -- say that five times fast -- lost her cat, then later found the cat hanging from a tree outside her Haitian neighbor's house. It's impossible to verify such a fourth-hand claim, but no news stories indicate anything similar happening recently. And Springfield police told the News-Sun Monday that while they were aware of the rumor on social media, they hadn't actually received any reports related to pets being stolen and eaten. ...

Ohio police have 'no credible reports' of Haitian immigrants harming pets, contradicting JD Vance's claim
www.nbcnews.com

... Police in Springfield, Ohio, said Monday they had received no credible reports of immigrants harming pets, contradicting a claim by Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance.

The senator from Ohio, as well as other Republican lawmakers and several conservative commentators, have in recent days asserted without evidence that the arrival of thousands of immigrants from Haiti had created chaos in Springfield.

In a post on X, Vance wrote Monday that "people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn't be in this country."

The Springfield Police Division said in a statement that they were aware of the "rumors" and had no information to support them.

"In response to recent rumors alleging criminal activity by the immigrant population in our city, we wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community," the police said in a statement emailed to NBC News.

They added that they had no information to support similar assertions about immigrants squatting or disrupting traffic.

"Additionally, there have been no verified instances of immigrants engaging in illegal activities such as squatting or littering in front of residents' homes. Furthermore, no reports have been made regarding members of the immigrant community deliberately disrupting traffic," the police said. ...

Reminds me of the time the DR bush apologists, who now call bush a rhino incidentally, insisted bush didn't lie about wmd because it isn't a lie if you really believe it

I suspect we will see that same logic being used here in the near future

I dunno.

At this point, I view the Trump/Vance campaign as in a need to expand their base.

So that leads me to ask, how does Sen Vance's comment pull in new voters?

All of this was utterly bonkers, even by 2024 standards. The Haitians in Springfield are in the country legally; they've been there for decades; and there were no actual "reports" about the immigrants stealing and eating pets. The nonsense spread like wildfire on the right, but it had no basis in reality.

Nevertheless, folks like conspiratorial billionaire Elon Musk and Republican Sen. Ted Cruz - whose affection for reckless misinformation appears limitless - seized on racist right-wing chatter and treated the insane theory as a legitimate story.

After NBC News asked the Vance campaign about the lack of evidence for his claim, a spokesperson said that the senator had received "a high volume of calls and emails over the past several weeks from concerned citizens in Springfield" and that "his tweet is based on what he is hearing from them." The spokesperson did not say, however, whether any of those calls or emails had included evidence of violence against pets, and did not offer proof of Vance's statements.

The idea of applying critical thinking skills never entered the picture. The vice presidential hopeful isn't a leader, so much as he's a follower of frenzied conservatives who saw some racist garbage on Facebook.

"Before Vance, neo-Nazis helped spread the debunked claims

The now-refuted claim appears to have gotten its start online in early August, when a user on the far-right social platform Gab with the screen name "bri ory" commented on photos of members of the white supremacist neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe marching through Springfield protesting Haitian migrants and carrying swastika flags.

The commenter claimed that "once haitians swarm into a town animals start to disappear."

Later in August, a resident named Anthony Harris claimed at a Springfield City Commission meeting that the migrants were eating ducks in the park. A member of the same neo-Nazi group also attended the meeting, and the group later echoed that claim on Gab. Days later, it appeared on X."

.

Haitian immigrants in Springfield have been the targets of rumors for some time, as NPR reported last month.

Republican committee woman Glenda Bailey has become one of the loudest voices against Haitian migration, publicly accusing the community of having diseases, carrying out voodoo rites and being involved in gangs.

She has also spoken at length about "great replacement theory," the baseless belief that there is a movement to replace white populations in current white-majority countries.

"Some of the Haitians are gang members," she told NPR. "I've seen them. They have become the occupiers. What they've done is they've replaced the population in Springfield, Ohio."

The Springfield Police Division told NPR in August that such claims were troubling.

"I think it's sad that some people are using this as an opportunity to spread hate or spread fear," said Jason Via, deputy director of public safety and operations.

"We get these reports 'the Haitians are killing ducks in a lot of our parks' or 'the Haitians are eating vegetables right out of the aisle at the grocery store.' And we haven't really seen any of that. It's really frustrating. As a community, it's not helpful as we try to move forward."

I have seen a picture of a person, possible Haitian, carrying a dead Canada goose by its neck. What is not known is how recent the picture is or whether the goose was killed illegally. It could have already been dead when he found it. He may have had a proper license and killed it during hunting season. I definitely require more proof than just rumors.

It's already CONFIRMED to be a lie. Weak minds bring weaker prognostications.

There was a female American citizen in Canton Ohio with mental issues that did kill and eat a cat and was arrested by police there.

She isn't Haitian, nor is she a recent immigrant. She was a person having a mental health crisis in the most heinous way.

Leave it to Trump and the right wing cesspool to turn a tragic incident into a racist attack on immigrants of color.

For as long as I can remember, republicans have been spreading lies and engaging in dirty tricks (does the name Roger Stone ring a bell?). Back then, republicans in leadership knew better than to embrace the lie or fall for the dirty tricks. Trump has swallowed the lies "hook, line and sinker" and republicans that know better have little recourse other than to go along with the lies less they lose the votes of the Trump faithful. Sane republicans secretly want Harris to win in a landslide so that they will have the ammunition to finally put Trump and Trumpism in the rear view mirror.

JD Vance & Trump may end up costing Republicans Rick Scott's Senate seat, at the least.

Of the hundreds of thousands of eligible voters of Haitian descent in Florida, 71% of them voted in 2020.

Rick Scott won by only 10,000 votes in 2018.

I don't know if everyone follows Gal Thursday's postings, but she uncovered the real reason behind the right's fixation on Springfield and Aurora. The reason they keep doubling down on these narratives is because they're trying to energize and enrage voters already susceptible and exposed to right wing media/conspiracy circles to increase the numbers of nominally college-uneducated whites and any other individuals who typically don't vote.

They're using this propaganda to enlarge their voter base with those who'd never vote for Harris but might show up to vote for the champion who'll stand up and do something about immigrant hoards. This is why Trump chose to keep focusing on the crazy because the people he's really talking at understand the code of what he's saying and they like it.

And Trump also knows that his more conspiracy-resistant supporters will simply write Trump's seeming lunacy off as Trump being Trump, master strategist.

In my mind, the best way to counter the above is to use Harris' new Republican backers such as Liz Cheney and others to pull the covers off of Jason Miller's treacherous plan, because if the Harris campaign tries to take the lead, it plays right back into Trump's narrative that "those people" don't care about people like us that recognize the crisis when they see it. But if the Republicans bring it to the electorate's attention - and reinforce that there is no actual crisis and Trump saying so is endangering lives and dividing citizens and pitting them against each other for his own benefit - the champaign has clean hands. And such news coming from staunch Republicans aware of Trump's danger might bring otherwise loyal Republicans over to Harris in large enough numbers to offset traditional non-voters Trump is sure to gain.

This is politics on the meta-level sports fans as disgusting as it is if this indeed is correct. And to top it off, the entire line of immigrant criminals was started by Russia-backed disinformation outlets to help Trump. It never stops people and neither can we until the election is over.

Hey when a Democrat says something I call it BS first because they have a lying media in their pocket. Just like they claimed Democrats never wanted to kill babies in the 3rd trimester. This is the 21st century version of the Southern strategy on a national scale:

The phrase "Southern Strategy" refers primarily to "top down" narratives of the political realignment of the South which suggest that Republican leaders consciously appealed to many white Southerners' racial grievances to gain their support.
