Trump Escalates Rhetoric on Outlawing Political Criticism

Donald Trump is ramping up his rhetoric depicting his political rivals and critics as criminals, while dropping a long trail of suggestions that he favors outlawing political speech that he deems misleading or challenges his claims to power.

... In a speech Friday in Aurora, Colorado, the Republican presidential nominee blasted the immigration system and lobbed a rhetorical grenade at his Democratic rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.

"She's a criminal. She's a criminal," said Trump, who was found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in his New York hush money trial. "She really is, if you think about it."

It's a pattern of messaging that has long been part of Trump's stump speeches but has escalated significantly in his 2024 candidacy. In the final stretch to the Nov. 5 election, the former president has developed a tendency to claim that speech he disapproves of is illegal, even if it is protected by the First Amendment. ...

And when he does it, the response from righties here (assuming we even talk about it...) will be "but this is what you liberals wanted, isn't it? why are you upset that he's doing what you want?" even though that's a. not true and b. a typical dodge that will allow them to avoid condemning it as forcefully as they have the boogeyman version of it they talk about now.

But then again, he thinks regurgitating nonsense from Jonathan Turley is crafting an argument...

Notice Jeff NEVER responds to this?

He whines about Censorship like the 1st Amendment is absolute.

Dems want to take down fake doctors giving out deadly medical advice and foreign agents spreading foreign propaganda. Jeff froths at the mouth.

Trump wants to take down and prosecute anyone criticizing him or his judges. And he goes right back to Dems are the real censors.

Trump wants CBS license revoked; FCC chair explains that isn't going to happen
arstechnica.com

... Trump's "threats against free speech are serious," Jessica Rosenworcel says.

Federal Communications Commission Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel today slammed Donald Trump for his repeated attacks on TV news networks. Trump, the former president and current presidential candidate, has been calling for licenses to be revoked from TV news organizations whose coverage he dislikes.

"While repeated attacks against broadcast stations by the former President may now be familiar, these threats against free speech are serious and should not be ignored," Rosenworcel said in a statement issued today. "As I've said before, the First Amendment is a cornerstone of our democracy. The FCC does not and will not revoke licenses for broadcast stations simply because a political candidate disagrees with or dislikes content or coverage."

The FCC press release said that Rosenworcel issued the statement "after repeated calls by former President Trump to revoke the licenses of broadcast stations for political reasons."

"TAKE AWAY THE CBS LICENSE," Trump wrote in a post today criticizing the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with his election opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump wrote in another post that "60 Minutes is a major part of the News Organization of CBS, which has just created the Greatest Fraud in Broadcast History. CBS should lose its license, and it should be bid out to the Highest Bidder, as should all other Broadcast Licenses, because they are just as corrupt as CBS"and maybe even WORSE!" ...

In October 2017, when Trump was president, he criticized NBC and wrote that "network news has become so partisan, distorted and fake that licenses must be challenged and, if appropriate, revoked." Democrats on the FCC and in Congress immediately rebuked Trump. ...

Disinformation is a catch all phrase lefties use as justification to censor viewpoints they dislike.

The best way to counter disinformation? An open platform for people to counter it. We don't need and really shouldn't want government to be policing this. The hyper paternalism of the left is nauseating.

Irrelevant. We have anti libel laws. We have laws criminalizing false advertising. We have defamation laws (ask Trump about that).

What we don't have are laws permitting the government to censor disfavored speech either directly or through a private sector proxy.

1A:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

You call it "disfavored."

The 1st Amendment doesn't protect foreign actors.
The 1st Amendment doesn't protect speech meant to cause violence or imminent lawless action.
The 1st Amendment doesn't protect fake doctors from providing medical advice.

Why do you ignore this every single time?
