... "Progressivism seeks to replace the basic premises of the Declaration of Independence and hence our form of government," Thomas said in a speech at the University of Texas Austin Law School pegged to the nation's upcoming milestone birthday.

A spirit of "cynicism, rejection, hostility and animus" toward America -- by Americans -- has taken hold, Thomas said in remarks carried live on CSPAN.

Thomas, the Supreme Court's senior conservative member, spoke broadly, not referencing specific contemporary events or political figures to make his case. But his comments come at a critical time for the sharply divided country and the Court.

He said that the values enshrined in the 1776 Declaration of Independence have "fallen out of favor" among Americans -- a trend perpetrated, he argued, by "intellectuals" and the nation's colleges and universities.

Thomas also said he believes many people no longer believe "all men are created equal" and deserving of "unalienable rights" protected by a limited government.

"[Progressivism] holds that our rights and our dignities come not from God, but from government," he said. "It requires of the people a subservience and weakness incompatible with a constitution premised on the transcendent origin of our rights." ...

Sexual misconduct allegations should absolutely be examined during Senate confirmation hearings, especially for lifetime appointments.

Not only is examining such conduct insightful into the individual character of a person, but provides a window into how they might behave while given extraordinary power. They might do it again.

Which, Clarence did do it again while a Justice during his career. He should have been disqualified (and so should have Kavanaugh).

But while Clarence was ultimately appointed, it was not without public humiliation.

Thomas has never forgotten it, holds a grudge against libs, and only seeks to make them suffer for it. And have a luxurious paid lifestyle for being a shill.

Trump and Israel's growing unpopularity in the US is a great opportunity for the next rwinger to step up and capitalize.

Dems need to get their house in order on this issue. Many are perfectly in sync with Trump on Iran.

Thomas, one of the activist justices who created new law out of thin air when they gave Presidents monarch-like immunity from prosecution, is crying about people no longer respecting a document that declared independence from monarchical rule?

The signatories of the Declaration would be disgusted by the conservatives on the Court today. Progressives are not the ones who have turned their backs on the Declaration. What could be more progressive than choosing self-determination over rule by dictate from one above the law?

I would argue that Progressives hold that the "unalienable rights" of the Declaration were originally limited to a small group of people and that the "progressive" work throughout history has been to use government to ensure those rights actually apply to everyone.

As for whether our rights come from God I would ask which God is going to enforce them for us?
