Donald Trump has said Taiwan should pay the US for protection from China, calling into question Washington's support for the island democracy should he win back the White House in November's presidential election.

the US was "no different than an insurance company"

Pay up Taiwan.

Yeah ... We wouldn't want anything bad to happen to you if you don't pay us protection money.

Bloatus may have already cut his deal with Xi.

And in 2018 #45 personally spoke with Taiwan's President when he was in the WH, angering Xi in Beijing. In Mandarin, "Fuong-Kwong" means "crazy" which is what the Taipei leadership must be thinking of the ex-Dotard-in-Chief.

"This dissertation research project set out to discover why Taiwan continues to fall short of its goal to spend 3 percent of its GDP on defense despite facing what appears to be an increasingly existential threat from PRC, and pressure from Washington to its increase defense spending. The goal was to contextualize U.S.-Taiwan security cooperation and examine how conditions specific to Taiwan's security environment shape Taipei's decision-making. The main thrust of the effort was to gain insights to the perspectives of Taiwan's decision makers. Perspectives gained through elite interviews were cross-referenced with rhetoric, actions, and outcomes in U.S.-Taiwan defense-related activities for analysis."

Analysis during the Biden administration. The Biden admin wants Taiwan to step up it, and have have been slowly but surely. Taiwan has stated they want to get to 3%, but are increasing spending to only 2.5%.

The US, regardless of whom wins the election, expects Taiwan to get steamrolled, hence the multibillion dollar subsidies to mega corporations to build chips here in Texas.

Wow, it's lovely to finally hear Dems championing spending military resources on protecting other nations (even though they don't seem to realize they are doing it). All it took was rephrasing the issue in a way that conflicts with their narrative and all of a sudden the tune changes.

"Without evidence, Trump repeated accusations that Taiwan had taken "almost 100%" of the US's semiconductor industry.

Taiwan produces more than 90% of the world's most advanced chips, mostly through the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC),"

I'd love to see more context here. So, they try to ding Trump by saying no evidence and then in the very next line they say Taiwan has more than 90% of the production. If any country has 90% production, it's pretty safe to say every other countries production has been impacted by close to 100%. I don't see any exaggeration there. Unless by "advanced chips", they only mean one kind of semiconductor. But then that context is missing from Trump's statement too, so it doesn't apply. Once again, political bias being put into a liberal article just to spread disinformation.

You need to get back on your meds.

Republicans don't want to defend our allies. Trump and Vance said so himself. They want to give Taiwan to China and give Ukraine to Putin.

2024 Semiconductor company revenue in the US is expected to be up well over 50% from 2020 and closer to 80% from 2019.

And you idiots voted against the Chips Act to bolster the industry.

How delusional are you?

Trump is anti-America so expect anything. Plus, Trump is so insecure that anything attached to Biden (or Obama) administrations is a threat to his ego.

Oh yes Donald Trump the-------- who accused Mexico sending rapists and murderers into America and to try to get America to pull out of NATO at the order of Vladimir Putin.

Behold a ------ who if ever again elected won't hesitate to send American troops to help Russia with whatever Putin wants.

Humtake is the ideal Trump voter. He believes anything, has no facts, and is willing to jump to conclusions without any logical reasoning or data behind it.

Well a young Republican tried to prevent a National dumpster fire from being reignited but the majority of them are just fine with putting back to office a guy who might as well have deliberately tried to spread covid.

Fmr Pres Trump is transactional. He does not care about democracy or those countries who fight to preserve democracy.

All he cares about is the transaction, the deal, i.e., if I give you this what will you give me?

In the transaction, democracy is an afterthought for him, if he thinks about it at all.
