An overwhelming majority of Democrats say they approve of Vice President Harris replacing President Biden atop the ticket if he decides to step aside, according to a poll released Thursday.

The Economist/YouGov survey found 79 percent of Democrats would support Harris at the party's nominee in November if Biden chose to withdraw from the race. A growing number of Democrats are calling for the incumbent to step aside in the wake of a poor debate performance against former President Trump last month.

Roughly 28 percent of Democrats said Harris was more likely than Biden to win against Trump. About 32 percent said the vice president was just as likely and 24 percent said she was less likely to defeat the former president in the fall.

If Biden stops running I am in favor of whatever Senator governor or member of his administration consistently polls the best in swing states.

#2 | Posted by Tor at 2024-07-18 12:20 PM | Reply

So 21% of the people you need won't support her. That is an amazing strategy right there

It could be 21% of Democrats think she is a bad candidate to run against Trump. Remember Democrats want to win the election.

In other words, according to this poll, 79% of Dems would NOT throw a hissy fit if Harris replaced Biden at the top of the ticket. There is no way this is anything other than terrible news for Biden. You can almost see the ground shifting under his feet now. It's not pretty.

I don't this means what you say. For example, two-thirds of Dems think Biden should step down (www.msn.com). But that doesn't mean that two-third of Dems "won't support [him]" on election day.

I don't think you understand what losing like 5% of the base will do

Replacing Biden will be a net gain.

Yeah - the ground has shifted.
Biden's not going to survive this seismic shift.

Its over for Biden but does he realize it?

#11 | Posted by Alexandrite at 2024-07-18 02:32 PM | Reply

sounds like he's starting to realize it - and is frustrated and even a little bitter. So many top dems no longer have his back. It is a betrayal, but is it warranted? It will be if we can get the House, Senate, and the Presidency - and with a decent margin in both the popular vote and the EC.

I'll take a win - even if it's slim, but I'd prefer a decisive WIN.

Good question. The answer may boil down to how many people actually have the full picture and when they start writing their memoirs.

Sure I do! But I don't think you understand that Biden stands to lose a part of that base as well if he insists on running. As demonstrated by the fact that his donations are dwindling. ("A well-connected advisor and fundraising coordinator for President Biden's campaign is reportedly warning that donations are at risk of drying up." www.msn.com ).

Joe did. But then it kept attacking his secret service agents. ("Bidens' dog, Commander, bit Secret Service personnel in at least 24 incidents, records show" www.cnn.com )

Ever think, given what appears to have been the SS performance recently, that dog knew something the rest of us didn't?

Here's Kamala Harris on the Campaign Trail today....

www.youtube.com

Not bad once she gets past thanking the locals.

Her problem before, as I recall, was likability.

She may have done some werk on that.

BellRinger is as concerned about Democratic primary voters as he is about the women he constantly votes to remove rights from.

"The memo singled out four Democrats who bested Biden's results by roughly 5 points overall across the battleground states:

Sen. Mark Kelly (Ariz.), Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Vice President Harris also outperformed Biden in polling but by a smaller margin than the top four, according to the memo.

"Voters are looking for a fresh face. Those more closely tied to the current administration perform relatively worse than other tested candidates," according to the memo.".

Biden should run 2016 but Hillary pushed him out.

Once again, we find ourselves where we are because of one stubborn politician.

That's my take - lawsuits to gum up the entire nomination process run into November. I know previous SCOTUS couldn't take up special cases outside their structured procedures, but who knows what this version would do. And who will stop them from taking up a case and ruling against the DNC for nominating someone OTHER than Biden?

Here's a wacky scenario I just thought of: what if they kept Biden's name on the ballot, but Harris is the one who is de facto running for the office because Biden would step down after being sworn in (if they're reelected). She could even make Biden her VP as insurance. Republicans would go ballistic over that, but I don't see how they could challenge it legally.

#30 | Posted by sentinel at 2024-07-18 09:32 PM | Reply

@#30 ... because Biden would step down after being sworn in (if they're reelected) ...

My main issue with that...

At this point, my guess is that Pres Biden faces an uphill battle to get re-elected.

That 'if they're reelected' aspect.

I remain to be convinced that the Pres Biden ticket has a snowball's chance in he!! come November.

Indeed, my concern extends to Pres Biden on the ticket extending down-ballot, and Democrats losing control of the House and the Senate at this point.

Don't you think you're putting the cart before the horse by expecting Biden to step down before a candidate whom people have overwhelming confidence can win in November emerges?

I like Kamala Harris, but I also know how the U.S. feels about a woman president.

Therefore, my personal preference, if Biden should step down, would be Adam Schiff.

No argument from me regarding Schiff. Unfortunately Dems have that Blacks and Women issue in passing over Kamala. Not something that Schiff could help the Dems with.

Can't demand support from women and Blacks every election and then toss them by the wayside when they have a good argument for the office (Hillary 2016 vibes).

Who's talking about abandoning. I'd assume that Schiff would recognize her value and she'd stay on the ticket as V.P.

I think folks would see that as an insult. She's already second in line for the office, so to have some White guy jump in front of her and take the top spot from her and keep her number two?

"I think folks would see that as an insult."

I'd think Harris, herself, could handle that out on the campaign stump. She knows better than anyone that this election is about saving democracy, not who's second banana.
