"Today, while the flag represents racism to some Americans, others recognize it as a sign of their heritage."

It is. And many have tried to understandably shed a lot of it. After all: Celebrating a heritage built on slave labor and a treasonous war waged against the nation in order to maintain a slavocracy? Seriously?

That's some highfalutin nonsense there.

"Today, while the flag represents racism to some Americans, others recognize it as a sign of their heritage."

Similarly, many Christian nationalists celebrate their religious "heritage" by embracing the revenge/war porn of the Old Testament and -------- all over the peaceful parables and allegories of the New one.

#1 not to mention Doc that it took place over 150 years ago.

Talk about holding onto a grudge and never moving on South...

In Germany, displaying a Nazi flag or symbol is illegal. Any violator is arrested and sees a judge within 24 hours and faces three years imprisonment.

Is America the only country that honors a defeated (and traitorous) enemy by hoisting their flag or naming military bases after them (e.g. Fort Bragg, NC)?

Why, that flag is our heritage! Playing the victim cahd is a beloved tradition heah in the Olde South, much like cotton plantations, boiled peanuts and sweet tea.

Lets see some forts named after Little Turtle, Sitting Bull and a few other of the country's original inhabitants who dealt out bloody noses on their way down.

Good shot! The US military-industrial complex paid tribute to the original indigenous defenders of North America by naming weapons systems after them, e.g.: the Tomahawk missile, Apache helicopters, and lest we forget "Geronimo!" when we parachute out of USAF C-130s or C-141s.

And if you are not aware, Mississippi celebrates Confederacy Heritage Month.

Nota Bene: James Daniel Blitch (23) is a good-looking young man with character and ethics that any parent would love to have as a son-in-law.

"Today, while the flag represents racism to some Americans, others recognize it as a sign of their heritage."

Well, to be fair, their heritage is racism. That flag represents traitors to the United States of America, who fought the war to keep slavery intact. That's their heritage.

Having antebellum ancestors from both Georgia and Tennessee, I view the heritage and culture of the Deep South from a different perspective. The poor, white, barely educated southern farmer and laborer was used by the rich white plantation owner and politician as a tool to perpetuate slavery and racial inequality. Having no slaves himself, the typical southern man was taught that if the slaves were ever set free or their lack of chattel negated in any way, they would take over his livelihood, drive him from his land, force him to work in the cities, and eventually intermarry with his own descendants.

In modern-day terms, this is exactly what Donald Trump and his elitist loyalists are doing to the 'MAGA" crowd. 175 years later, and by Jove! It still works! The Confederate flag is a potent symbol akin to the modern-day MAGA hat. It represents the fealty of the common man to the white, anglo protestant elitist businessman/plantation owner who promises to keep him and his heritage safe.

If I may add a personal anecdote, my ancestors, many of whom fought for the Confederacy, were able to lift themselves out of poverty, move out of Tennessee and to the western lands of Dakota and Wyoming, where they made a better living as ranch hands and teamsters, eventually co-founding the Cheyenne-Black Hills Stage Company in the 1870s. They still clung to their southern heritage and Confederate culture until at least the 1930s when, on a spring day in 1938 my great-grandfather summoned true courage, started a fire in his backyard, and burned HIS great-grandfather's confederate flag, war correspondence, and, hardest of all, his moth-eaten, tattered butternut military uniform. Thereafter, he moved back to Tennessee a "free man", becoming a friend, confidant, and staunch supporter of progressive Democratic Senator Estes Kefauver's presidential aspirations until his death in 1958.

For many people, it represents what it represented on the Dukes of Hazzard.

@ it represents what it represented on the Dukes of Hazzard"

You mean the near-extinction of 1969 Dodge Chargers due to overzealous stunt-work in pandering to the entitled, 12-25 yr old, white, conservative male demographic?

So about that rebel flag. The Dukes pilot doesn't talk about it directly, but it does allude to the Civil War, in a scene that explains why Uncle Jesse (Denver Pyle) gave up the 200-year-old family moonshine business to save his nephews from jail: "They fought everybody from the British to the Confederacy to the U.S. government to stay in it." On the one hand, the Duke boys' car is the General Lee; on the other hand, their ultimate enemy - Jefferson Davis Hogg - is named for the president of the CSA.

There's nothing about slavery or states' rights in there, but the mythmaking is familiar enough. The Dukes fly the Confederate flag, the setup assures us, but they're outside any negative ideas you have about the Confederacy. They're just little guys going up against a succession of big guys. Just'a good old boys! There's nothing overt there about the flag - and the series didn't dwell on it after that - but it's very much part of the "history not hate" message that led, by now, to a majority of American whites seeing the flag as a symbol of pride while most black Americans see it as one of racism, according to a CNN poll.

www.today.com

The show's creator, Gy Waldron, told THR he "wholeheartedly" supported the Black Lives Matter movement "and its quest to address racism around the world."

But Waldron, 87, who grew up in Lenoxburg, Kentucky, said he remembered seeing both the Confederate flag and the American flag flying side-by-side during his childhood. "I had relatives fight on both sides of the Civil War and we honored both the American and Confederate flags," said Waldron. "No one even connected the Confederate flag with slavery. It was simply a part of our Southern culture."

It is freedom of speech and freedom of beliefs that are fundamental to our heritage. Some people would like to take that away and replace freedom of opinion with only their beliefs aka political tyranny.

If your political opinion and belief centers on treason and backs treasonous actors from centuries ago, you deserve the controversy despite the first amendments protections.

Swallow it

Their heritage is literally treasonous.

They need to swallow said context and take an American History course.

I stopped watching TV years ago, but I read that the "Dukes of Hazzard", a CBS show produced in the 1970s, had more guest stars of color in their run than two NYC 1990s NBC shows combined: "Seinfeld" and "Friends". You can do the math in the link below.
