Texas High School Coach Killed by Random Shot on Rooftop Bar

Ayden Burt, a 28-year-old Texas high school coach, was randomly shot and killed in a rooftop bar while attending a San Antonio conference just after midnight Tuesday. Burt was shot in the back at the Smoke Skybar on Crockett Street while sitting at a table and was not involved in any altercation. The bullet was fired from a passing vehicle.

Gun violence in Texas has surged 63% under Republican Governor Greg Abbott and his lax gun control laws. In an average year, 4,122 people die and 7,726 are wounded by guns in Texas. The Lone Star State has the 29th highest rate of gun violence in the US. This poor young woman's life was senselessly ended before she even had a chance to enjoy it.

How much longer can we stomach this?

The death rate for Texas is higher than the total US military deaths in Afghanistan.

2,459 US total military deaths in Afghanistan (2001-2021).
4,122 Texans (or tourists) are killed on average in one year.

Morning ... Beats me. I was raised around some firearms and you didn't even think about them absent some maturity, demonstarted sense of responsibility, training in weapons' use (and misuse). Nothing special, just the thought that being around firearms requires an acute awareness of what they are, how they work, and what they can do. Unregulated possession of and access to guns is just plain nuts.

Thanks to the GOP, the NRA, and ALEC, the US is one enormous warzone and Americans are in a daily lethal lottery: "Will I or a loved one be shot today?" In approximately six to seven years, every single American regardless of race or class will be able to say that they have been touched by gun violence using the "six degrees of separation" algorithm (see below).

Doc Sarvis: With the exception of the AK-47 (too loud for my musical ears when I had a chance to test one) and the 9mm Browning Hi-Power, I too have unfortunately been around weapons in my career. But like our favorite TV detective Columbo, I can't stand guns.

We've watched America devolve into firearms anarchy where funeral business owners and gun manufacturers are enjoying supremo cigars at the expense of tens of thousands of innocent casualties every year. And there is no end to it.

DNA kits have been delivered to schools in Texas so parents can identify their children after they've been shot to pieces by repug incels.

Many of the children gunned down inside Robb Elementary were not easily identifiable as a result of their catastrophic injuries. Some close family members provided DNA swabs in order to positively identify the children's remains.
