The "non-verbal" in his diagnosis is related to the fact that he struggles to understand "non-verbal" social cues and actions like most people do. IOW, it's not necessarily things that he "hears" that trigger anxieties, it's his difficulty in understanding and contexting actions and expressions most of do naturally without much intentional thought.

It's not that he can't verbally express himself, it's that his mind struggles to understand why and how people interact socially as they do.
