Four Dead and 18 Hurt in Alabama Mass Shooting

At least four people have been killed and 18 injured in a mass shooting in Birmingham, Alabama, police say. "Multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people" late on Saturday in the Five Points South area of the city, Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

#3. Not so fast.

Birmingham is perhaps Alabama's least MAGA cities, with a large non-MAGA minority population and a large, well-educated middle/ and upper middle class population. And the Five Points is Birmingham's more upscale commercial district has some of the area's best restaurants and id a very creative part of the Birmingham scene. More likely the victims were the exact opposite of stereotypical MAGA types.

A Birmingham cop who was interviewed said the shooters were using the "Glock switch" that turns a pistol fully automatic.

3, 5, 6: I had friends who grew up in Birmingham decades ago. Their fathers were literally rocket scientists brought down from Ann Arbor to work on the space program. Much different from the rest of the state.

Cultural note: They were at University of Alabama-Birmingham in the mid- to late 70s. Two of the speakers brought to campus in those years were Allen Ginsberg and Hunter Thompson. I met the latter in '78. Life highlight.

Huntsville is actually where most of the rocket scientists were congregated and I dare say much different. (A lot of actual Nazis among them.) That town is full of the well educated. Today there is a massive difference between the two for sure.

I do agree with Augustine - Birmingham is one of the least MAGA cities. Of course having a black population of 70% might have something to do with that.

I read a book years ago about those days from the viewpoint of both Americans and German scientists, Peendemunde, Huntsville, etc. Some of the stories were funny, German scientists driving like bats out of hell down backroads around Huntsville, for instance.

James Michener also wrote quite a bit about that era in his book, "Space."

The stories about the U.S.-Soviet race to get to the German rocket scientists at the end of the war are really interesting.

Back in the 80's I went to the Birmingham area to spend a long weekend with a Frat Brother and his wife.

They lived in the suburbs.

Their neighbor was a local sheriff.

When they talked with him on a "next-door neighbor" social level, they just went along to let him speak.

Both my Frat Brother and his wife related stories to me about the conversations they had with that neighbor.

They both were quite aghast of the unapologetic racism of his comments.

Within a year, they left that area ...

The "rape" of Springfield was mostly carried out by partisan country/USA hating Democrats ( NGOs, temp employment agencies being generously paid, who wanted it turned into a poverty stricken community of foreign workers, and politicos. Isnt this the citizens country, not foreign invaders who have no right to even live and work in USA?

Springfield blames Trump for their problems now... even the Trumpers do, they just won't call him by name. Because they, too, are idiots.
