Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Amazon Prime edited a crucial scene from the film It's a Wonderful Life where George gets to see how things would have been in Pottersville had he not been born. Why on earth did they think they needed to cut that scene?

Please note that this story is only being reported by rightwing media and even in the linked story it makes clear that Amazon Prime offers both versions of the film on its platform and likely did not have a hand in the decision to edit the shorter version. "Amazon Prime has clarified that the full version of the film still remains on their platform. Moreover, it appears the version of the film was released following a copyright dispute regarding the scene, which was based on a short story."

"only being reported".

The attached link is MSN.

However, that still leaves the question...what compelled anyone to edit out such an important part of the story?

You might as well say "But it's from the Drudge Retort" because you posted it here.

Anyone care to actually answer my question.

Does anyone have any idea why this was edited?

Seems to me it must be for someone's sensitivities.

Any ideas or just the usual ignoring the question.

Or is it no one posting thinks it makes any sense either?

#10 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2024-12-27 06:46 PM | Reply

I suspect it was edited because the moral decline of Pottersville was presented as a moral failure.

Sort of similar to what we're seeing all across America.

There is the copyright issue involving a short story but since Amazon showed both versions then that negates that possible motive

#11 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2024-12-27 07:02 PM | Reply

I should have said judgemental moral failure.

@#11 ... There is the copyright issue involving a short story but since Amazon showed both versions then that negates that possible motive ...

Perhaps the resolution attained in that copyright issue allows Amazon to show both versions, but maybe has to promote the abridged version more than the full version?

The ole "settlement out of court" type of thing.

Lawsuit settlements can be perplexing.

#15 | Posted by LauraMohr at 2024-12-27 07:51 PM | Reply

The abridged version likely had absolutely NOTHING to do with 'sensibilities".

First of all, Amazon does not edit or abridge anything.

It was abridged by a company called Hoopladigital, who likely sold the rights to offer the abridged version to Amazon Prime for sale/rental.

IaWL is derived from a short story called The Greatest Gift

IaWL, in it's entirety has dubious copyright ownership due to mistakes with filing.

The Greatest Gift retains it's copyright.

My best guess is the abridged version is offered to avoid having to pay residuals to the copyright holder of The Greatest Gift, while the full IaWL movie does have to pay them.

The really funny thing is that the FBI criticized the movie upon release for it's negative portrayal of the evil banker-too communist at the time.

Now, the right is criticizing the movie for being too woke for REMOVING the reference to him being evil,

Funny too that Potter was never caught or punished for his theft, something contrary to the Hayes code if effect at the time.

Also, BillJ is simply an idiot.

Truth,

"My best guess is the abridged version is offered to avoid having to pay residuals to the copyright holder"

It does seem to be a complex issue from what I just read.

However, from a judgemental moral failure POV, what we saw could have happened in Pottersville is pretty well on the mark what is happening across much of the US.

You mean the bankers and the wealthy have strip mined our economy resulting in people not being able to provide for themselves? I agree.

@#17 ... It does seem to be a complex issue from what I just read. ...

Oh yes.

Copyright ownership in the media world is complex.

I say that from two viewpoints...

1) working for a major record company back in the day.

2) trying to post an innocuous video to youtube in the 2020's.

The "complex issue" is not decided upon moral concerns, but the bottom line profit.

Amazon Prime wants to make money, and the best way for Amazon Prime to make money is for Amazon Prime to repsect copyright issues.

The "reason" is we had Potter as a President, and now have re-elected him.

Aw, isn't that cute? The poster who voted for the guy who breaks half the Commandments on a regular basis wants to lecture others about moral depravity.

Prosecutor, State AG, Senator, VP (whose administration brought the American economy from republican lead disaster to the enby of the world).
vs
Conman who bankrupted multiple companies, rapist, insurrectionist, whose last term left a million dead Americans, who is filling his new administration with the worst people on the planet.

Clown,

The copyright seems like a good enough reason but they still showed both versions.

I once saw an airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas on tv.

They had edited out Lucy talking about presents saying, "All I want is what I have coming to me. All I want is my fair share."

Sort of lost the whole point of the show.
