So, is it Sec Hegseth's apparent lack of senior aides to help guide him, or is it just Sec Hegseth's apparent incompetence, or ...?

i wish I knew.

But what I will say is that a democratic ally of the US is being subject to an unprovoked invasion, and the Trump admin seems to be waffling, almost, it seems intentionally trying to help Pres Putin's invasion.

I rose to the high rank of corporal in the Marines, a lot of years ago, and one of the things I did learn was the need for chain of command cohesion...and as Trump loses it more and more, his command structure will strike out on their own, more and more... and Hegseth is just the person this old guy wants making command decisions.
We lost the Vietnam War because we were, plainly said, on the wrong side. It was Catholics minority in the south running things as a colonial power, against the people who were overwhelmingly against the colonialists.
Kennedy got us into that war, but he was the civilian leader elected to make such decisions.
No logic in the next sentence, just the truth, America elected a true fascist, Trump, to make decisions with major impact...so of course our democracy is getting weaker and weaker.

In a larger sense this doesn't matter. Firing Drinky Pete would be the admission of an error in judgment on Der Dotard's part, and that will NEVER happen. Short of grabbing a feel of Ivanka or vomiting on the floor in the Oval Office, Hegseth is safe in his job. Of course, he could always fall out of a window, or get run over by a tank or have to go to the Betty Ford clinic...

Hegseth would not have cancelled those Ukrainian shipments had he not thought he had Trump's permissio.

But Trump changed his mind, or literally forgot what he told Hegseth any thing about it because he's mentally impaired.

Either way there will be a scapegoat.

I think it will be Hegseth's aide.

Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) called on Friday for Senate hearings into reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not inform President Donald Trump of a pause in sending weapons to Ukraine last week, something Trump has since reversed.

Young told The Hill's Alexander Bolton, "We need to do our oversight here, ask our questions of this administration just as we have previous administrations. We need to hold hearings and ask questions and learn what's going on."

Bolton spoke to several Republican senators and their top aides who sounded the alarm on the issue. "To hear there may have been other pauses or this pause went on longer than any of us know, to me that's alarming," said a Republican senator who spoke to Bolton, requesting anonymity.
