The federal government shutdown continues. Republicans and Democrats appear no closer to an agreement to end it. Many federal workers are missing full paychecks and don't know when they will resume.

... When the shutdown started, Republicans surmised Democrats would cave and vote to reopen the government in a matter of days.

Fifteen days into the shutdown, Democrats are more dug in than ever, and Republicans now say they expected this strategy all along.

"They have to show their base who hates Trump that they're fighting back," Rep. Don Bacon said. "There's not a clear way out for them. They say they want guardrails' but no specifics."

"They'd like to keep the focus on Republicans and on President Trump, at least for the time being. But they miscalculated, making such unreasonable, overreaching demands" for the short-term funding bill, Sen. John Cornyn told NOTUS. "I don't know how they're going to get out of this, but we're not going to negotiate until we get the government back open."

When a reporter asked Republican Sen. Katie Britt on Oct. 1 how the shutdown would end, she was firm.

"They'll blink," she said of Democrats. ...

The struggle with Trump and his corrupt and cowardly allies has become existential.

It's not in the interest of the United States that Democrats blink.

Blue states, being wealthier, can better care for its unemployed which gives dems a wider latitude to act. Red states will have a more difficult time caring for its unemployed. As a result, people in red states will be putting severe pressure on their elected representatives to reopen government.

El Rey Dotard II not only doesn't know how to negotiate in a principled manner, his actions since the inauguration demonstrate he cannot be trusted to keep his word. Executing pocket recissions, forcing Congress to pass recission bills, and pulling money from all manner of sources to fund activities during this shutdown demonstrate how Dems see Trump as one who will go back on his word in a nanosecond. (His three wives could confirm this opinion.)

At this point hostages will have to be taken for the Dems to believe that the MAGA functionaries will negotiate in good faith and actually execute on what they agree upon. Such hostage taking worked in 'The Godfather' and now it will have to be employed with this crime syndicate...
