Sean Penn will direct a movie about a police officer who was at the Jan. 6 Capitol riot in 2021, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. Following his Oscar-winning performance in "One Battle After Another," Penn will direct the as-yet untitled film from his own script. Bradley Cooper is in talks to star, though no deal has been finalized. Representatives for Penn and Warner Bros. didn't comment Tuesday on the movie's protagonist but said he's based on a real person. When Penn attended the 2022 hearings of the House Select Committee investigating the deadly attack on the Capitol, he sat between Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police officers Michael Fanone and Daniel Hodges, both of whom responded to the attacks. Fanone testified that he rushed to the scene and was "grabbed, beaten, tased, all while being called a traitor to my country."

Many years ago we heard Sean Penn and his young daughter speak at an event in Wash DC. I had a chance to personally meet him and shake his hand afterwards, but I declined.

Chalk it up to nerves.

We've always admired Sean Penn because he fights hard for the underdog, whether its Ukrainians getting slaughtered by the Russians, poor struggling Mexicans in Chiapas State, people in Africa being starved or killed, Haitians being deported wholesale back to that island hell-hole, victims of environmental degradation-- basically soup-to-nuts advocacy of the down-trodden and the weak.

Inexplicably though, in all of these decades, our arch-champion of the underdog has rarely spoken up about Israel's ghastly oppression of the Palestinian people. In one rare instance a year or two back, Mr. Penn likened the terrible Los Angeles wildfires to "Gaza West," for which he was rebuked by some quarters.

Otherwise, my handsome and charismatic champion of the vulnerable is sort of kind of quiet about that huge elephant in the room.

We chalk it up to an occult "blind spot."

And Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec 1941 or downtown Manhattan and the Pentagon on 11 Sep 2001 were cocktail parties.

See?
