The biggest-ever cyclospora outbreak in the U.S. still shows no signs of slowing down. Michigan has now recorded 10,077 cases, and at least 160 people have been hospitalized. The state, which usually only has about 50 cases a year, was the first to publicly identify iceberg lettuce as the possible culprit spreading Cyclospora cayetanensis, the parasite that causes watery diarrhea or other gastrointestinal issues associated with cyclosporiasis. "Past outbreaks have generally been smaller, and the source has been identified faster." Hamer believes several factors are to blame " including recent cuts to federal funding for outbreak response and surveillance, the theory that there is more than one outbreak underway, and the prevalence of leafy greens on dining-room tables in the summer months.
