related reading noted by Prof Wright from a new book by the author who coined, "Culture Wars" decades ago:

"From "the nation's leading cultural historian" (David Brooks, New York Times), the long-developing cultural divisions beneath our present political crisis

Liberal democracy in America has always contained contradictions " most notably, a noble but abstract commitment to freedom, justice, and equality that, tragically, has seldom been realized in practice.

While these contradictions have caused dissent and even violence, there was always an underlying and evolving solidarity drawn from the cultural resources of America's "hybrid Enlightenment."

James Davison Hunter, who introduced the concept of "culture wars" thirty years ago, tells us in this new book that those historic sources of national solidarity have now largely dissolved.

While a deepening political polarization is the most obvious sign of this, the true problem is not polarization per se but the absence of cultural resources to work through what divides us.

The destructive logic that has filled the void only makes bridging our differences more challenging. In the end, all political regimes require some level of unity. If it cannot be generated organically, it will be imposed by force.

Can America's political crisis be fixed? Can an Enlightenment-era institution"liberal democracy"survive and thrive in a post-Enlightenment world?

If, for some, salvaging the older sources of national solidarity is neither possible sociologically, nor desirable politically or ethically, what cultural resources will support liberal democracy in the future?"

Christianity is only about going heaven.

The soul.

The eternal salvation.

#3 | Posted by ClownShack at 2026-09-20 03:46 PM | Reply

I see you didn't watch it... the soul going to heaven is Plato, not the bible.

#4 | Posted by Corky at 2026-09-20 04:25 PM | Reply

Christianity is only about going heaven.

No its not, it's about atonement for sins and a deep belief in the father and the holy trinity. Beyond that its about living out the teachings.

I am not even religious and I understand that.

The concept of the soul and eternal salvation is the sales pitch for Christianity.

#6 | Posted by ClownShack at 2026-09-20 04:28 PM | Reply

it's about atonement for sins

So you can go to heaven.

and a deep belief in the father and the holy trinity.

In order to be allowed into heaven.

You are buying an old sales pitch, not the actual story in the book.

#8 | Posted by Corky at 2026-09-20 04:36 PM | Reply

Then your headline is wrong.

Sounds like you're trying to say, "the Bible isn't about going to heaven".

Because Christianity is a business and heaven is the reward for joining.

You could find out the point in the first 5 mins of the video.

The bible is about heaven coming to earth, not Plato's soul going to heaven.

Here, let's make it easy for ya...

Mistakes were made, especially in Western Christianity, not so much in the East... look at it this way; it's another chance to deny the actual story, or this part of it, if that's what you want.

Thing is, one would have to know the actual story to deny it.

It's all a word for something else, for which there is no word.

John 1:1-14 was used to introduce Christianity to Taoists. The Word / the Way / the Tao.

The NT's most essential theological passage wasn't news (good or bad) to those heathen Chinee.

Huh.

A doctrine where an all-powerful creator brings into existence an inescapable and inherited wickedness and then offers his services (in the guise of his son) to save his creation from another wicked condition he also engineered brings to mind the stereotypical rural car mechanic clandestinely breaking something on an out-of-towner's car just so he can tow it back to his shop and charge for the repair.

I'm pretty sure when Jesus was questioned about where heaven was located, his answer was "it is within you".

But this is going to be one of those threads where Corky will have to display his moral and theological dominance so that no one steps on his frail ego.

just for fun:

"A Hidden Note at the End of Job Reveals His True Identity

Most people think Job is a timeless story about suffering...a righteous man, a cosmic wager, and a God who eventually shows up with no explanation. But there's a 2,200 year old note at the end of the oldest copies of Job that most people have never read.

And it changes everything about who Job was, when he lived, and why his story was written.

Job wasn't isolated from Israel's story. He was at the center of it."

the bossman doesn't allow nonsense crap to be posted about COVID or global warming.....I've always said it's because he'll get ostracized by the cool kids in media if he allows such things to be posted here. Honestly, I don't know if that's at least one of the reasons or not even the entire reason....but I have to believe there has to be some scrutiny he wants to avoid from somewhere.....

I wonder if he shouldn't do the same thing with this subject as well.

Awww... Eberly is so offended at the very subject that he wants to Ban it.

Tell us what about this subject is irrelevant, 'nonsense crap'?

It seems to me that religion, or the lack thereof, as it affects our Gov and our lives should be off limits.

What is it.... whom is it that Rogers should fear 'scrutiny' from?

The Pope? For trying to buy his hat?

Methinks this just makes for the kind of thread where you can't focus on gossiping about your neighbors here and getting into prolonged cat fights with them. (see Rogers on, 'the bitchiest bitching bitches' that ruined his site)

Or is that too catty a thing to say?

On the contrary. I'm not offended by opposing opinions on global warming, or Covid and certainly not religion.

I merely suggested that i'm surprised the boss man hasn't locked religion in with those other categories.

None of it. But there are people here who are very rigid anti-religious zealots.

And I know you know that. You've tangled with them many times.

Have you and I ever locked horns over religion or spirituality?

I don't think he "should". I just speculate that there is a camp of high minded self-righteous folks who think religion is as silly as a topic as COVID and global warming. Who are these folks to explain anything except through the eyes of scientists?

Faith based explanations in the face of logic and science?

I wouldn't say ban.

My usual caveat: I'm an atheist in the traditional sense (I don't believe in any "God" or gods or salvation or afterlife, or care about creation [God and the big bang are both nonsense in my book]) but will defend religion and religions all day long, sometimes even their weirder manifestations.

Maybe more surprisingly, I could be the lone member of the bizarre DR faction that respects Corky and Eberly.

I've read NT Wright. I've made and continue to make a handsome living editing Christian theology for major publishers for 25 years, sitting around my house in my shorts.

Corky's postings are evangelical (in the good way) in a weird sense. He's sincere in what he's doing. But what he's doing, in my mind, is proselytizing and selling and posting for the sake of not discussing theology but about God's existence and Christianity's superiority ... to a vast audience that he's only going to rile up, and which always devolve into the same arguments about how science can't prove faith and sky fairies and now MAGA, and always underlying how Christianity, like communism, might be good if anyone ever tried it.

If Christianity is what gets Corky in a much larger boat, good for him.

I'd rather Bellringer write a barbecue thread, or have a rightwinger join in on the music thread occasionally.

Cannabis threads used to pull the DR together if we want to sing Kumbaya.

Thanks for the post... except for the assumption of the motivations of others, which you must know from your werk is a hazardous bidness .

www.google.com

My motivations for posting anything here are because the subject interests me, and I know may interest a few others here of like or similar mind, including our Universalist site owner... and that I think may interest those who have an open or at least an inquisitive mind about Life, the Universe, and Everything.

So long, and thanks for all the fish! (and loaves).

Leave those wacky Universalists alone, too.

I wish those who wanted to engage with you on Christianity -- and were on an alternative wavelength -- would do so, if there are any such Retorters.

Me, I'm into liberation theology.

Assuming the motivation of others is an unreliable mental shortcut that often leads to misunderstandings, conflict, and damaged relationships.

Me? Unreliable? Mental? Shortcuts? Guilty as charged.

With all due respect, I'm not too concerned about the last three on hallowed Retort ground, esp. w/ people I've already said I respect.

- liberation theology

You're in good company with the likes of Noam Chomsky, Chris Hedges, and Thom Hartmann, among others. Two of which also identify as Christians.

And in my opinion, JC his own self.

I also like Tom Holland on Cultural Christianity from his book Dominion, where he argues that Western civilization, secularism, and modern ethics are fundamentally shaped by a Christian moral framework; 2000 years of 'weathering' leaving progressives and liberals today sounding like Red Letter Jesus.

Often much to their dismay!

I like my representative, Jarad Huffman's new book:

No Prophets: The Fight to Save Democracy from Christian Nationalism, published by W. W. Norton & Company on August 18, 2026.

Jared Huffman, U.S. Representative for California and the only openly humanist/non-theistic member of Congress.

Huffman argues that Christian nationalism has evolved into America's most dangerous political movement, aiming for an authoritarian theocracy.

Drawing from his firsthand observations during the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection"where many participants followed self-declared prophets"Huffman details how religious extremism has infiltrated the highest levels of government.
