Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

In the southeastern city of Lyon, a tourist office building was burned. Some storefronts along the shopping streets near Bordeaux's city hall were destroyed, and the goods inside appear to have been stolen, social media videos geolocated by NBC News showed. City halls in Marseille, Lille, and Angers were broken into, Interior Minister Laurent Nuez said Sunday, adding the arrests made had little to do with the student protests. Authorities had "lost control" in major cities, the interior minister conceded. He offered his resignation to Macron, who rejected it.

Liberal politician in Denmark responds .. sounds eriroly similar to what I see here in CA with the number of administrators needed to keep the peace, no one in public school is learning.

Member of the European Parliament for the Liberal Alliance.

I do not know how things are in other countries. But in Denmark, when I follow the coverage of the unrest in France on our two public-service television broadcasters, the explanation I keep hearing is this:
France has spent years cutting back on upper secondary education. Classes are overcrowded. Add teacher shortages and excessive centralisation, and young people take to the streets.
That is only half the truth. And when you peddle half the truth, you are, as we know, also peddling half a lie.
Here is what can be pieced together from the French quality press and the official figures.
France's public spending per upper-secondary pupil is above the OECD average. That should complicate any account which treats a lack of money as the whole explanation.
There is some truth in the criticism: some lyces have large classes, and the French education system is centralised and bureaucratic.
One example worth mentioning is Parcoursup, the higher education admissions platform. I suspect it would be a strong contender in any international competition for bureaucratic opacity and unnecessary stress.
But, as I have already said, this is only half the truth.

The other half concerns what teachers and school leaders are being asked to endure.
...
In my view, France faces a problem we also know in Denmark: schools are being asked to compensate for failures of integration and basic socialisation that extend far beyond the classroom.
The danger is that, instead of institutions civilising their pupils, disruptive pupils end up barbarising the institutions.
No school can function properly if it is expected to tolerate young people who turn up unprepared, have no interest in learning and spend their time causing trouble and destroying the learning environment.
...
It is hardly surprising that such conditions can wear teachers down. They cannot reasonably be expected to shoulder the entire responsibility for correcting mistakes that the French political elite has spent decades making.
...

That is the kind of convergence I mean by Islamogauchism in practice.
The flags also deserve attention. Palestinian, Moroccan and Algerian flags have appeared at some of the protests, including scenes of disorder. To me, this is another indication that, for some participants, the agenda extends beyond class sizes and school budgets.
We do not yet know the full picture. But what concerns me is the apparent convergence, within parts of this movement, of several forms of radicalism: Antifa activism. Decolonial ideology. Islamogauchism. Islamist networks that have learnt from the left to speak fluent woke.
That is why I do not think it entirely misplaced to speak of an "Islamogauchist intifada" when describing this radical current within the French protests.
The wider protest wave has already spread to Belgium and Italy.

The Danish public-service coverage I have seen gives me far too little of this side of the story.

Two questions: Is it the same elsewhere in the Western world? And if so, why?

Yeah.

It used to be about deflecting away from the Epstein Files (which candidate Trump wanted to release).

But now it seems to be trying to deflect away from the upcoming (and in-process in some places) election.

JD Vance blindsided at NC rally by Epstein heckler standing right behind him
www.rawstory.com

... A protester standing directly behind Vice President JD Vance confronted him at a North Carolina rally, shouting, "Release the Epstein files!"

Vance was speaking Monday when the man stood up in the crowd behind the stage, according to a video FactPost shared on X.

Trump 47 Committee Inc., a political action committee aligned with President Donald Trump, hosted the event at Hyder Warehouse in Hendersonville, WBTV reported.

Vance was there to boost Republican Jennifer Balkcom in North Carolina's competitive 11th Congressional District race two weeks before the midterm elections, according to WLOS.

The FactPost video shows Vance, one hand on the podium, turning around to face the man as he yelled.

" ... a protester directly behind Vance gets up and yells release the Epstein files!'" independent journalist Aaron Rupar wrote on X.

"Vance suggest[s] he's an illegal immigrant," Rupar added in the same post. ...

But, back to France ...

How France's worst rioting in years erupted and how the government responded
apnews.com

... Rioters clashed with police, set cars on fire, stormed public buildings and engulfed a historic city hall in flames in France's worst civil unrest in years as violence and looting swept through major cities during nationwide protests.

About 2,400 people were arrested over the weekend, and authorities said thousands of businesses were damaged or looted. The rioting overshadowed demonstrations against rising living costs and poor conditions in schools in which hundreds of thousands of people marched peacefully.

President Emmanuel Macron denounced "unrestrained violence" by "insurrectionist elements from radical far-left groups, joined by numerous criminals."

More protests could be in store. High school and university student organizations called for more demonstrations Thursday and Saturday. The National High School Student Coordination group urged young people to "take to the streets" and backed continued blockades and demonstrations.

A group of activists seeking to revive the 2018 "yellow vest" movement against perceived social injustices also announced nationwide demonstrations planned for Saturday under the slogan "Macron must go." ...

An interesting aspect of this current protests is that Ms Le Pen's party seems to be gaining in popularity.

Riots grip France as Marine Le Pen gains ground ahead of 2027 election

... We are living through a profound crisis of trust, of authority that poses a threat to democracy, said Marine Le Pen'

In a major update, France is facing renewed unrest as riots grip parts of the country while polling gains traction for Marine Le Pen ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Marine Le Pen, frontrunner for the 2027 presidency censured the upheaval as a failure of governance while her polling jumped to 31-37% in first-round intentions even leading a potential runoff against Jean-Luc Melenchon 69-31%.

Her allies demanded President Macron's resignation and she conceded that Islam aligns with the state on the condition that Sharia is rejected. The chaos exposes the severe polarization in France six months ahead of the April election with international voices like Elon Musk calling it the nation's last chance.

Marine Le Pen on her social platform X, stated, "You saw yesterday our cities, our streets, our country, battered, mistreated, ransacked."

"We are living through a profound crisis of trust, of authority that poses a threat to democracy. This observation must alert us: our country is caught in a vise, or even taken hostage, between violence and powerlessness." ...

Rodeo? You betcha, and the list of those things I'd rather do is long.

Anyway, the dynamics of a demonstration that morphs into violence are certainly hard to predict. The general contours, perhaps, but there are a lot of moving parts. For openers, you can't control who shows up and what they do. Flags is a small problem.

Makes the goings on with the bulls and their riders seem almost tame by comparison.
