Springfield Mayor: 'Your Pets are Safe'

[Springfield, Ohio Mayor Rob] Rue said Trump's amplification of false claims has "created a negative light" for the city. "These claims are, they were just untrue. And we may mention that ... we just don't see reports of those," Rue said of Trump's remark.

Trump, Vance and many other Republicans are continuing to spread lies about pet eating, even when they know it is causing Haitian immigrants to be subjected to death threats and making them afraid to send their children to school. They don't care about their hateful smears causing harm to Americans.

All they care about is repeating the lie because Trump's ego won't allow him to admit he said something incredibly incorrect and foolish during the debate.

There are 300,000 Haitian-American voters in Florida.

The pets may be safe. But now the humans of Haitian decent are not.

This is the world Trumpers are creating. A world full of hate for the Other. I swear it feels like we are living a black mirror episode some days.

52 more of those days to go ...

Just a reminder

These legal immigrants fled horrible dangerous situations and being subjected to this treatment is abhorrent

That isn't the only reason Trump's doing it. He's doing it mainly to attract usual non-voters (read, nominally more non-college educated who lack critical thinking skills) that consume the same conspiracies and social media memes his right wing supporters churn out like Pez shooting out of a dispenser.

He trying to reach people who'd never vote for Harris if their lives depended on it, but generally think all politicians are FOS. He's using their innate xenophobia and sometime bigotry to drive them to the polls in the swing states.

The target is people who already tune out traditional media and non-right wing oriented content. So even though most think he's spewing crazy, to those he's seeking he's spinning pure gold to fuel their already existent paranoia and belief in Replacement Theory.

Maybe they could bus them to Martha's Vineyard.

Springfield has seen its better days. There are plenty of respectable, low wage jobs there and many in the town see the Haitians in their midst as a godsend, willing to do low level manufacturing and warehousing jobs for low pay. Those visitors are all reported to be here legally. What's the problem with them taking the left over pieces of the pie that white Americans have already picked over and pushed back? Hell, if nothing else, the local youth soccer teams will probably get better...

trump had some nerve to slander Ohio like that.

I hope every buckeye votes against him from disparaging them so.

Springfield is not a rich town but they are expected to absorb 20,000 refugees in a town of 60,000.

There aren't 20,000 Haitians. It's closer to 12,000.

They came because there were jobs. Their presence has revived the economy of a Rust Belt town in long population decline. There are now new manufacturing, warehouse and distribution centers in town because of the growth. There's also an empty E.F. Hutton Tower downtown that's in talks to become the center of a new tech hub. Three new housing developments are going up -- the first new home construction in years.

Here's what it was like in 2016 before the immigrants came.

www.csmonitor.com

"This is a town of overgrown lots, of boarded-up homes, of vacant businesses. It is a town where the remaining sections of the mammoth Crowell-Collier publishing plant loom, a brick-and-concrete monument to a thriving city that once was but increasingly is no more. ... Between 2000 and 2014, Springfield saw more of its middle class slip down the economic ladder than any other metro area in the United States, tying Goldsboro, N.C."

#14 | Posted by rcade TY for posting this RCade. I tried to research the economic background of Springfield, and found one article I couldn't read, which left me frustrated:

This is the perfect time for a twofer that will absolutely be the end of Trump. The Harris campaign should make immediately helping the entire Springfield community the living example of how her government cares about all of America especially when it attacked by an enemy.

Call volunteers and resources to the community to meet its pressing needs. Get corporations to donate needed goods and supplies, ask law enforcement officers to volunteer to take security shifts to keep all the citizens safe from Trump's deranged followers. Make improving Springfield the unmistakable example of all her words of unity and shared destiny. Trump words have laid a veritable siege on the people of Springfield, not just the Haitian immigrants.

Lift up Springfield as Americans have lifted up other nations in their moments of crisis. We can take care of our own with and outside of government, that what America has always excelled at. We help our struggling neighbors, we don't try to make them targets through lies and smears.

In Harris' America, We are Springfield and Springfield is US. Let's get to work. Trump's trying to tear Springfield down. Let's lift them up instead and show Trump what REAL America truly is. It's brother helping brother without caveat, simply because we can, and he's hurting. And it's truly that which makes America Great.

From the Springfield, Ohio website...

Immigration FAQs
springfieldohio.gov

...
The City of Springfield has experienced a surge in our population over the last several years, primarily due to an influx of legal immigrants choosing Springfield, Ohio as their new home. Here are some most frequently asked questions about immigration in Springfield.

Q: Why Springfield?
A: Springfield is an appealing place for many reasons including lower cost of living and available work. These conditions are thought to be the primary reasons for immigrants to choose Springfield. Now that there are numerous immigrant families residing in our community, word of mouth is adding to our population, as this communal culture is sharing their positive experiences about living in our community with family and friends who are also seeking to leave the impoverished and dangerous living conditions of their home country.

But it's not just Clark County. Other Ohio counties that are experiencing similar population increases due to immigration include, Allen County, Hancock County and the Columbus and Cleveland metro areas.

Q: How many Immigrants live here in Springfield?
A: Although it is impossible to provide an exact number, based on data provided from numerous sources, such as Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Springfield City Schools, area healthcare providers and social services agencies, the total immigrant population is estimated to be approximately 12,000 - 15,000 in Clark County.

Q: Are the immigrants here legally and how did they qualify?
A: YES, Haitian immigrants are here legally, under the Immigration Parole Program. Once here, immigrants are then eligible to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Haiti is designated by the Secretary of Homeland Security for TPS. Current TPS is granted through February 3, 2026.

...

Q: Why don't the immigrants work?
A: Immigrants are working in Springfield"in various industries that are in great need of workers. Jobs include work in warehouses, manufacturing and the service industry. Some immigrants are working in professional jobs as well.

Springfield is also now home to ten newer businesses, opened by Haitian immigrants, including, 2 Haitian restaurants, 7 Haitian grocery stores and 1 Haitian food truck.

@#15 ... Springfield seeks to be immigrant friendly city

So... Springfield, Ohio looks to welcome immigrants to help reverse the decline caused by wealthy corporate shareholders outsourcing manufacturing to China?

That is a problem... why?

#18 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-09-13 08:40 PM

@#18 ... That is a problem... why? ...

And why should that decision by that area then make it a target for threats by fmr Pres Trump's MAGA cult, causing the shutdowns of schools and government buildings?

#19 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-09-13 08:42 PM

Now the orange traitor is threatening to deport the Haitians, who are legally in the US, were invited to Springfield, and have helped to revive the city's economy, to Venezuela. If you are a minority of ANY kind, and think you are safe from Dotard's deportation squads, let this be your warning. Unless you are white, you are at risk of being rounded up, put in forced labor camps and being deported EVEN IF YOU WERE BORN IN THE UNITED STATES! He has also vowed to rescind the 14th Ammendment, meaning that children of immigrants born in the United States would no longer automatically be recognized as citizens. The racism is out in the open, so people had better wake up and understand what's at stake.

No issue, but not at the expense of its citizens.

Rich Americans will throw poor Americans down the -------, just to virtue signal.

Martha's Vineyard was the perfect example.

#27 | Posted by oneironaut at 2024-09-13 10:35 PM

It's no coincidence these amoral cretins concocted this vicious rumor about Haitians

Outside of south Florida and a few pockets across the lower 48, most Americans are unfamiliar with them

So they aren't significant to the GOP in terms of lost votes, most Americans know little about Haitians here in the states, and they come from a country who's name Haiti sounds like Hades to every podunk from Virginia down to north Florida and across fly-over USA

It's really heinously calculated

#28 | Posted by ChiefTutMoses at 2024-09-13 10:40 PM

@#26 ... A white man would say. ...

Not really.

Maybe a MAGA cult member would say that.

But to ascribe it to all white men just shows the desperation of your current alias in its apparent attempt to appear revelant.

What else yer got?

#29 | Posted by LampLighter at 2024-09-13 10:40 PM

No problem... Trump said today he would deport these Haitians back to... 'Venezuela'!

If Democrats weren't importing the third world, they would be doing nothing. It's funny how they actually think these claims spun up out of nowhere. Where there is smoke there is fire and I guarantee those mongrel migrants are killing pets and small local wildlife like ducks and geese because that's the culture they came from. They're starving down there and get food from any sources available. And now those same people are here and will continue the same behavior

"If Democrats weren't importing the third world ... "

You're a one trick pony ain't ya? It's such a tired old playbook.

Racists like you have been promoting racism in America since the late 19th century.

Before then there wasn't any such thing as "illegal" or "legal" immigration to the United States. That's because before you can immigrate somewhere illegally, there has to be a law for you to break. The founding fathers didn't make one. So the founding fathers were perfectly ok with immigration. Why do you hate the founding fathers bro?

Not only were the Founders opposed to restricting the free movement of people into the United States, but they opposed restrictions on citizenship that they felt would discourage immigrants from using that freedom. Madison spoke of "great numbers" who would wish to come to the United States.

You don't like immigrants or immigration then call Congress and change the law. Again.

Oh that's right. Trump told Congress NOT to change the law again because right now Trumpy needs as much immigration chaos as possible to help him in the election.
