@#18 ... The "charges" are to save face. ....
That's the way it looks.
These "charges" did not appear to have been ~discovered~ until after he was mistakenly deported.
I say mistakenly because the Trump admin has also said his deportation was a mistake.
Judge orders return of wrongly deported Maryland man to US from El Salvador (April 2025)

... A U.S. judge ruled on Friday that the Trump administration must return a Maryland man who was wrongly deported to El Salvador to the United States within three days, the latest legal setback for the administration's hardline deportation policies.[emphasis mine]
The U.S. has already acknowledged Kilmar Abrego Garcia -- a Salvadoran migrant who lived in the U.S legally with a work permit -- was deported in error last month ...
A "work permit" isn't even a thing it is a mashup of two things.
Work Visa and Employment Authorization Document.
What is the difference between a U.S. Work Visa and an Employment Authorization Document (EAD)?

Trump spent 6 million to deport 238 people to El Salvador.
That's over 25,210 per person.

Republicans are happy to pay taxes for this, because it punishes their enemies.
Just like they were happy to borrow money for a war in Iraq.
Americans could owe $6.5 trillion for wars in Afghanistan and Iraq " and that's just the interest

Abrego Garcia, mistakenly deported, is returned to US to face migrant smuggling charges
www.reuters.com
... Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the man mistakenly deported from Maryland to El Salvador by the Trump administration, was flown back to the United States to face criminal charges of transporting illegal immigrants within the U.S., Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday.
Abrego Garcia's return marks a turning point in a case that became a flashpoint for critics of President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration policies, who pointed to it as a sign that the administration was disregarding civil liberties in its push to step up deportations. ...
I hope the fact that Kilmar Abrego Garcia was initially busted for transporting migrants comes up in trial. The migrants he was driving were sent to toil on the bridges in Maryland, like the Francis Scott Key Bridge which collapsed after a cargo ship struck it. Several people of color like Kilmar were killed because white folks simply don't want to fill in potholes with hot tar at night: cdn.abcotvs.com
