The number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border illegally has dropped more than 40 percent in the three weeks since President Biden announced broad restrictions on asylum claims, administration officials said Wednesday. This is the lowest level of illegal crossings since Biden took office, DHS said.

The shift was evident Tuesday in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, which has been one of the border's busiest migration corridors for the past decade. Along areas of the border where migrant families have crossed in large groups to surrender to U.S. authorities and seek protection, Border Patrol agents pursued a handful of adult men trying to evade capture. Agents' radios were mostly quiet.

The Tucson area in the Arizona desert saw a similar decline in unlawful crossings, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said during a news conference in that border city Wednesday.

"The president's actions are working because of their tough response to illegal crossings," Mayorkas said. "We are attacking the smuggling organizations that prey on the vulnerable even as the smugglers try to undermine our actions."

Biden administration officials hope the falling numbers of migrants can blunt Republican criticism of the president's border record. The president has criticized Republicans for opposing a bipartisan bill that would have increased enforcement, leaving him to act on his own.

Homeland Security officials cautioned the results of the crackdown were preliminary, and cast the measures as an attempt to balance tougher enforcement with more generous opportunities for migrants to reach the United States legally.

You can guarantee that these numbers will come up tomorrow in the debate, with Biden stating facts and Trump likely calling him a liar and an open border advocate.

Regardless of where one falls, the facts remain that the Congressional GOP negotiated a border security deal that they said was better than anything before it, but they allowed Trump to force its defeat for the sake of his own campaign. Hopefully Biden will contrast himself as the President trying to fix the problem compared to Trump being the candidate trying to exploit the problem for his own benefit, the country's needs be damned.

Good.

Pres Biden is trying to resolve the issue.

While fmr Pres Trump instructs Congressional Republicans not to pass a bill they created to resolve a major border problem.

Pedophile Joe Biden kept the border open for the last 3.5 years and had his braindead administration tell you that there is no problem at the border. After that lie failed as even liberal cities started crying about the massive inflow, Joe tried to blame his lack of action on GOP in Congress - his hands were tied. Yet, we see Biden use an EO that decreased the problem by 40% without the GOP which means he could have done this 3.5 years ago before the 12M+ illegals flooded the country.

Yes, this should come up in the debate about why Biden lied about no problem at the border, lied about not being able to do anything about it without the GOP, and what he intends to do about the 12M+ illegals that came under him - which we know his plan is to give them free ---- and give them voting rights.

Democrats want to show this as a 'win' somehow - but the Independent voters are not that stupid.

@#4 ... Pedophile Joe Biden kept the border open for the last 3.5 years and had his braindead administration tell you that there is no problem at the border. ...

If that is true (and it is not), then why did fmr Pres Trump kill the GOP bill that would have solved major issues at the border?

They won't admit that he did that for purely crass political reasons; yet another of his Party over Country moves.

But Cultists don' care what the Leader does; he's their Immaculate Deception.

So, lemme get this straight. Through Executive application existing laws Trump managed to keep illegal entries to manageable levels. Biden walks onto office and does what he promised on the campaign trail and rescinds a bunch of measures that he inherited and then goes beyond a lack of enforcement and encourages illegal entry with open arms. The result was predicted prior to his inauguration and illegal entry entries skyrocketed to unprecedented record high numbers with ALL of the baked in pathologies.

Fast forward 3 years and the situation is so bad that entering an election year it's a top 3 issue on the minds of voters and Biden is way under water. So the Senate, with the complicity of a small number of Republicans (yeah, Minute men supporters remember GOP senators during the W years) craft a bill codifying this insanity. Even before Trump spoke up it was DOA in the House. Dems spin that Trump thwarted the Utopia of immigration bills. Never mind that it never even passed in the Senate.

When all of that BS didn't remove the albatross hanging around Biden's neck he issues a Trumpist EO purportedly doing what Biden claimed only the Senate bill empowered him to do. And while I question this 40% reduction number ... . If it's accurate further underscores that this crisis was created. Deliberately. As a matter of designed policy until it became such a massive liability during an election year.

Everything I wrote is 100% true - including that Pedophile Joe could have done this EXACT SAME ACTION 3.5 years ago. Why did the GOP not pass the 'immigration reform' bill? Well, probably because 1.) it would still allow for 5000 illegals per day to still cross the border (not solving the problem), 2.) they didn't need to take any action like accepting a ------ bill when Pedophile Joe Biden could have unilaterally put in place THE EXACT SAME EO without them, 3.) they do not want to be blamed for accepting a ------ bill by compromising when there was no need to do so - they played it 100% correct and forced Pedophile Joe Biden to put in place an even more effective action than the ------ bill put forward, thereby showing the Democrats to be total liars on this issue.

As I said, this is a strange 'win' being declared by --------.

- it never even passed in the Senate.

It was well on it's way to passing the Senate until Trump ordered the Cult there to use it as a campaign issue instead.

And of course you question the 40 percent, JHack, as it doesn't fit the Cult Narrative.

Republicans had 2 full years in Trump's term. What did they do? Pass tax cuts.

Did they propose or enact sweeping immigration reform? Fund asylum courts and additional agents?

The Senate did months ago. Trump killed it so he'd have it as an election issue to run on.

Speaking of running in 2024: Many think the twice impeached Trump only ran to keep himself out of prison.

@#12 ... Did they propose or enact sweeping immigration reform? Fund asylum courts and additional agents? ...

In June 2018, the Republican-controlled Congress did propose a bi-partisan "Four Pillar" bill that addressed the issues fmr Pres Trump wanted to be addressed.

But he seemed to skewer the bill anyway.

Why?

The answer is simple, fmr Pres Trump gains more benefit from having immigration as a main talking point in his campaigns than he does if the GOP actually works to solve the problem.

Bottom line is the question --- why does the GOP not want to solve the immigration problem they seem to be so vocal about?

I have an answer, but I doubt if some here would like it.

This is a lie. Trump's desire is very clear: STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, not make it more efficient to process illegals into the country.

None of the proposed solutions would have done that - at most, they slow the rate. We are done compromising with the -------- on this point - illegal immigration is ending and we are going to deport Biden's illegals before the -------- grant them citizenship.

#16 | Posted by Claudio at 2024-06-27 01:16 AM | Reply | Funny: 1

Trump's desire is very clear:

His only desire is to remain out of jail.

Which he certainly will be heading to with the classified documents case that judge fangirl is stalling until after the election.

J6 is a little less of a slam dunk, but again he is not saying he is innocent, he is saying he is immune. That's what guilty people do.

His only hope is to win the election, tell the DOJ to drop both cases still pending and hope and pray he gets only probation in his 34 felony convictions.

To win, he needs the illegal immigrants and is why he killed the bipartisan border bill and is why other than providing to his vile scum base spank bank images of children in cages during his first horrible presidency nothing was done about illegal immigration other than award contracts for substandard wall construction to people who paid him $250K to be members at his bedbug infested florida golf motel that toppled over in the rain.

Why didn't he fix it in 2017? Tax cuts and killing Obamacare was more important.

He didn't fix it, because the GQP would not let him because they know that to morons like you it is the number one issue why you will keep voting for those criminals.

So here comes along Sleepy Joe and signs an EO that drops immigrants by 40%. And the right wing echo chamber goes ------- about Joe daring do the work they refuse to do. Something something about EXECUTIVE POWER ABUSE even though Biden has signed HALF the number of EO's that the bloated orange pedophile did.

Stuff if Clodio.

"broad restrictions on asylum claims"

To understand this better, this is saying the effect of Biden's order was that we would deny MORE applications for asylum and that knowledge lead to fewer attempts to cross our border illegally?

How would an EO impact illegal crossings? I can see fewer asylum approvals....but fewer crossings?

#24 | Posted by eberly at 2024-06-27 02:26 PM | Reply

40% fewer in only 3 weeks? People being the journey to illegally cross our border more than 3 weeks in advance....how is it possible to reduce this number by so much in so little time?

Because of an EO? That only stated we would approve fewer applications for asylum?

U.S. immigration laws allow anyone who reaches U.S. soil to seek humanitarian protection if they have a well-founded fear of persecution in their home country. The emergency measures Biden announced June 4 suspend access to those protections on an emergency basis, arguing the U.S. immigration system is too overwhelmed by illegal crossings and insufficient resources.

Lower number of illegal crossings have allowed U.S. agents to better safeguard the border and increase patrols, the department said, "enhancing DHS efforts to interdict individuals who pose a threat to public safety."

The DHS statement echoed the administration's calls for lawmakers to boost funding for the U.S. immigration system, including a major expansion of detention and deportation operations.

DHS said the number of migrants who are allowed into the United States with a pending court date after crossing illegally - the practice derided as "catch and release" - has dropped 65 percent under Biden's measures. Deportations and returns to Mexico have doubled over the past three weeks, the department said.

And for those still wanting to blame Biden please note that the President does not control the funding for border security - Congress does. And how many times has Biden asked for more funding to alleviate the situation at the border only to be stonewalled by Republicans in Congress?

President Biden has repeatedly asked for additional funding to address the situation at the border, but has faced resistance from Republicans in Congress:

In October 2023, the Biden administration submitted an emergency supplemental request to Congress for $13.6 billion to address southwest border and migration issues.

The President's FY25 Budget reiterates the need for this funding, which includes $4.3 billion for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice to build longer-term capacity in border security, immigration enforcement, and countering illicit fentanyl.

Biden has called for Congress to pass legislation and provide meaningful reforms and supplemental funding to secure the border.

The President led efforts to achieve a bipartisan agreement on border policy reforms and funding in February, which was described as the toughest and fairest border reform legislation in decades.

Despite these efforts, Congressional Republicans have been accused of stonewalling this deal, with the White House urging them to stop blocking the legislation and work to send it to the President's desk.

In January 2024, House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed skepticism about a potential Senate border deal, indicating continued resistance from House Republicans.

Biden has made multiple requests and attempts to secure additional resources for border security and immigration enforcement. These efforts have been met with consistent opposition from Republicans in Congress, particularly in the House of Representatives.

Daily crossings have dropped below 2,400, the lowest level since January 17, 2021.

The Biden administration introduced stricter asylum restrictions, including:
- Partial closure of the border to asylum seekers
- Swifter removal of migrants
- A five-year reentry ban for those removed
- Potential legal consequences for repeat offenders

Since the policy's enforcement, over 24,000 individuals have been repatriated on more than 100 flights to 20 countries.

The number of migrants released pending court hearings has decreased by 65%.
