Does Trump Think Greenland Is Much Bigger Than It Is?
President-elect Donald Trump's recently revived determination to acquire Greenland have many speculating why he wants the self-governing territory. One reason could be how "massive" he believes the island to be.

... But Greenland is not nearly as large as it appears on most maps. The Mercator projection -- which has been the standard map projection since the 18th century -- is the name for the phenomenon in which land masses on maps appear much larger and distorted the further they get from the equator. Greenland is approx the size of 1/3 of mainland USA but only has a population of approx 55k.
Greenland has rare earth minerals.

Presuming Trump is interested in Greenland because it appears big in maps is dumb.

@#2 ... Greenland has rare earth minerals. ...
... and your point is?
That the United States should just use its military to take over a sovereign country because of its mineral wealth?
And, as a follow-up, what tier of the US population would benefit from such a takeover? The wealthy who could benefit from that mining operation, or th workers who just seem to sit and watch as their Country invades another Country?

Lamp,
My point is you're dumb if you think Trump doesn't know flat maps distort the size of continents.

I don't think he has the faintest idea. He is not a smart man, and very poorly informed.

I wouldn't begin to suggest I know Trump's motives but Trump's past actions indicate he wants to see the US be more self reliant.
These minerals may be part of his reason for showing interest in Greenland.
The reality is it's unlikely at some point there isn't going to be some significant change in our borders some day in the future.
Never say never.
I'm sure Denmark would fight it ever happening.

@#7 ... My point is you're dumb if you think Trump doesn't know flat maps distort the size of continents. ...
You say that as if you know it as a fact.
But I've not yet seen any indication that Pres-elect Trump has a clue about the distortions of the Mercator projection.
What's yer got?

So, you seem to admit that Pres-elect-Trump has not a clue about the size of Greenland.
And that he just seems to want the US wealthy to be able mine the natural resources of Greenland.

I have no doubt that Donald doesn't know what a Mercator projection is.
He is neither an educated man or a man interested in education.
Yes, BILL. You're smarter than he is.
Take some comfort in that as the man you voted for ruins your life.

Hey, that sounds a lot like war. You know, when a hostile power invades an alien territory and the indigenous people and their government resist.

Trump was a serial liar and internationally disdained buffoon his first term. What possible evidence have we seen to suggest it will be different the second time around? If anything, between his misplaced claims of vindication', his continuing clear cognitive decline, and his universally acknowledged vindictiveness, it should be obvious that this time around will be even worse. (Not that his supporters will ever be able to honestly acknowledge it.)

For starters, I do not think that I am dumb, and I resent that denigration.
That aside, why do you think that Pres-elect Trump has a clue about the Mercator projection of an island on a map vs the actual land size of that island?
Do you have some link into Pres-elect Trump's brain to understand what he actually knows and understands?
Or is it that you may just be trying to blindly trying to support a cult leader?
