Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The Trump administration is set to cut subsidies for new solar and wind power projects on Saturday. Estimates suggest the subsidies have cost taxpayers more than $141 billion over the past 16 years, more than any other energy source. The Working Families Tax Cuts, a signature piece of President Trump's tax legislation signed a year ago, set Saturday as the deadline for federal tax credit subsidies on any new solar or wind projects not currently under construction.

"Beyond their direct costs, subsidies are causing artificially low or negative wholesale prices, scarcity prices during periods of high demand and low wind and solar generation, inefficient use of existing assets, and increased transmission costs," Brent Bennett, a researcher at the Texas foundation wrote.

The government supports wind and solar projects through the Investment Tax Credit and the Production Tax Credit. The former is a one-time credit equal to the percentage of an amount invested and the latter is based on the amount of electricity produced.

Before the Trump administration's proposed cut, the Congressional Budget Office estimated the two programs would increase the federal deficit by $308 billion between 2026 and 2035.

If wind and solar so profitable the companies do not need subsidies by the taxpayers.

If fossil fuels are so profitable then those companies do not need subsidies by the taxpayers.

Annual explicit subsidies for the U.S. fossil fuel industry are estimated between $30 billion and $35 billion, including direct government spending and targeted tax breaks. When factoring in indirect supports like leasing public lands and unaccounted costs of pollution, estimates surpass $700 billion annually.

And I don't think the costs of "military protection" and war are even included in this estimate.

You mean you don't actually know.

Not even addressing military, governments from Federal all the way down to local government depends heavily on gas and diesel for everything from transportation to power generation and heating. And it is an issue of national security. Subsidies make sure the governments are the first ones in line. Subsidies also ensure oil companies who boost production at the government's asking will recoup their investments.

Our dependence on oil is why we've spent the past 26 years at war in the Middle East.

It's why Iran is winning this war.

What stupid, greedy people conservatives are.

No Iran won the war because the US back in the second Obama term, the trump and Biden terms didn't invest in drone technology.

All those $$$$ went to big ticket items. American military has forgotten why it won WWII.

Its a good defeat though, its inconsequential in the big picture. It exposed the military to a good lesson, hopefully they learn fast enough, but I think they are behind.

The military is a cost you must bear to have the reserve currency. The size of the US debt only exists for that reason.
