If wind and solar so profitable the companies do not need subsidies by the taxpayers.

If fossil fuels are so profitable then those companies do not need subsidies by the taxpayers.

Annual explicit subsidies for the U.S. fossil fuel industry are estimated between $30 billion and $35 billion, including direct government spending and targeted tax breaks. When factoring in indirect supports like leasing public lands and unaccounted costs of pollution, estimates surpass $700 billion annually.

And I don't think the costs of "military protection" and war are even included in this estimate.

You mean you don't actually know.

Not even addressing military, governments from Federal all the way down to local government depends heavily on gas and diesel for everything from transportation to power generation and heating. And it is an issue of national security. Subsidies make sure the governments are the first ones in line. Subsidies also ensure oil companies who boost production at the government's asking will recoup their investments.

Energy? You don't need no stinking energy.

But asking folks to set the thermostat to 78 is "TYRANNY"

Our dependence on oil is why we've spent the past 26 years at war in the Middle East.

It's why Iran is winning this war.

What stupid, greedy people conservatives are.

No Iran won the war because the US back in the second Obama term, the trump and Biden terms didn't invest in drone technology.

All those $$$$ went to big ticket items. American military has forgotten why it won WWII.

Its a good defeat though, its inconsequential in the big picture. It exposed the military to a good lesson, hopefully they learn fast enough, but I think they are behind.

The military is a cost you must bear to have the reserve currency. The size of the US debt only exists for that reason.

Iran won the war because everything the noxious orange chomo touches dies.

Iran won the war because the US back in the second Obama term, the trump and Biden terms didn't invest in drone technology.

They shut down the strait and the world supply of fuel and fertilizer got choked.

American military has forgotten why it won WWII.

They were the only country with a nuclear bomb.

Its a good defeat though,

If America wasn't dependent on oil, the Middle East would be meaningless to us.

The military is a cost you must bear ... to have your economy be so completely reliant on fossil fuels from the Middle East.

Y2K? Let me tell you about this guy we call The Shah. He looked like Phil Leotardo from the Sopranos.

but in general, it's best to start off with the Allied invasion of Persia in 1941. A joint military operation by the UK and Russia to force regime change and secure the oil fields away from Nazi reach.

Unless we want to go further back to the Anglo-Persian Oil Company around 1910. Oil discovered there in 1908, occupied by 1914 in WW1. Then it's some major crisis every 15-20 years to now.

The US is not at all reliant on 'fossil' fuels from the ME - we are net exporter of oil, gas and coal... but most developed countries do: e.g., Japan just relaxed the rules - for a year (for now) - to increase the use of coal-fired power plants, despite increased coal prices, because they're very dependent on imported energy, partly because of shutting Fukushima nuclear reactors - they are importing LNG to meet 98% of gas demand, of which only 6% goes through Hormuz.

Outside of France - which has ~70% of domestic energy needs delivered by nuclear power, and is the world's largest net exporter of energy - large industrial countries in Europe and Asia are reliant on 'fossil' fuels, despite (or because of) heavy investments in renewable energy. EU even categorized NG as "green" energy and, with Hormuz closed, relaxed restrictions on methane emissions.

drudge.com - Electricity rates by state

Energy is a global market, and is priced accordingly. Most of the world's nations, capitalist or "socialist" - and tremendous industrial and technological progress achieved in 20th century - have been reliant on 'fossil' fuels, some hydropower and nuclear :

drudge.com - France's Solar Power Generation Hits Record High on Friday - 2026-05-11 :

... Because the worldwide demand for energy grows along with all the "records" of growing supply of energy [from renewables], 80+% of the world's energy is still generated by oil, coal, NG (32%, 27%, 24%) with hydro (6%) and nuclear (5%).

If only there were some better, efficient, cleaner energy sources discovered and produced in the 20th century! Maybe starting some time around 1940s? Bueller? Bueller?
