The Social Security Administration website crashed four times in 10 days this month, blocking millions of retirees and disabled Americans from logging in to their online accounts because the servers were overloaded.

Social Security is being forced to break down.

The effect on some families (that means children) will be quick, dramatic, and nasty. I know some of these people and they are wigging out, expecting to be out on the streets.

They're right. They should expect that. And we are going to see them there.

Happy 1930, everyone. My, isn't President Trump a great man?

You, or someone you know, depend on social security.

I wonder. Will you be as giddy when lives are upended because of your decision to vote for Trump?

Whatever you say, buddy.

Best of luck with the rest of the Trump administration's plans to reshape the federal government and the nation.

I know all you Trump supporters are multi millionaires, so it makes sense none of you are concerned about losing your social security and Medicare.

"I know all you Trump supporters are multi millionaires,"

Not merely millionaires.
They are so insulated from economic shock, they do not require a functioning economy to sustain their way of life.
Or they would be... concerned.

MAGAts don't care. They could be reduced to eating pet food to survive and still vote the same ------ back into office.

Maga people don't care if they lose out from the loss of social security. They (trump voters) get more satisfaction from hurting others than they get from helping themselves.

Dems fearmonger with their dirty unwashed mass of voters that cause them all to panic call the SSA and it crashes their ability to process claims. This is no different than inciting a bank run. The Democrats hate America and hate their voters and they think making their lives more miserable will cause them to turn out for the Dems in the midterms. I don't think that plan is going to work as they expect.

Compare this reporting from the Washington Post with a report put out yesterday by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities on the dangers DOGE poses for Social Security, emphasis mine:

The Administration, Musk, and DOGE have engaged in four types of activities that each present a clear danger to Social Security but together create the potential for significant damage to the program:

Launching rhetorical attacks on Social Security programs, including false claims of massive fraud--providing a pretext for actions that could undermine eligible beneficiaries' access to benefits.

Engaging in deep cuts to staffing, new restrictions on phone-based services for the public, and "agency-wide . . . restructuring" and "massive reorganizations" of SSA that are neither well thought-out nor wise " all of which threaten SSA's ability to serve seniors and people with disabilities effectively while providing a potential excuse for privatizing key services.

Jeopardizing the reliability of SSA's systems, including through the sharp reduction of staff with technical expertise of systems that serve some 73 million people, or 1 in 5 people in the United States, each month.

Threatening the security of people's personal information by giving untrained DOGE political appointees unprecedented access to sensitive SSA data.

These four dangers (see Figure 1) compound one another--rather than making improvements that would help Social Security beneficiaries now or in the future. Social Security is highly accurate and efficient--with a payment accuracy rate of 99.7 percent and administrative costs of only 0.5 percent--and has successfully paid benefits for over 85 years. After years of underfunding, SSA needs more staff--not fewer--to give the nation's retirees and people with disabilities the service they deserve.

Wow, what a bizarre coincidence that this is happening at the exact same time Republicans are destroying Social Security.

I get $1225 a month and that keeps me alive. $200 in SNAP benefits sure helps when rent is $650 and utilities are over $250. Losing any portion is making being old a curse.

Sorry to hear is Shoeless.

Best of luck to you and all Americans who are in your position.

It's a shame when the nation you've worked in and given to your whole life suddenly has no more use for you and prefers you disappear quietly so some billionaires can get another tax cut they don't need.

---- republicans. Bunch of soulless miserable losers.

#2: I am sorry to read this, Shoeless. We are all in the same sinking boat, some closer to drowning than others. Do your best to hang in there. Perhaps your state or municipality has a program that can help. Someone in my father's apartment building receives a little bit of money every month from Catholic Relief Services, but CRS is experiencing financial problems now too.

The Cruelty is the Point.

We never had a cruel enough bunch of politicians and their billionaire backers to increase MIC spending and support Banks over Soc Sec and Medicare recipients, aka the People... so that the same billionaires could have more tax cuts.

Not the America I grew up in, even when when Nixon and Reagan and W held office.

@petebuttigieg.bsky.social

There were howls of protest and denial from the GOP any time we pointed out that Republicans want to cut Social Security.

Now the most powerful official in the White House goes on TV and calls it "the big one to eliminate."

Elon Musk says he wants to "eliminate" programs like Social Security and Medicare: "Entitlements... That's the big one to eliminate"

"Well, Thom, I wish I had better news. But basically " as bad as you think it is "i t's worse. The damage that Elon Musk and his Doge goons have done at Social Security is truly catastrophic.

We're already seeing cascading service failures, and they're not stopping. They keep implementing new changes to collapse the system faster"closing offices, firing people, disallowing many services to be done by phone, and pushing more people into physical offices.

Those offices were already overwhelmed, dealing with 10,000 Baby Boomers entering the system daily, all while staffing is at historic lows. And that was before Musk arrived with his chainsaw.

They've already closed or scheduled 45 offices for immediate closure. They've fired thousands of workers, and they have a mid-to-long-term memo proposing a 50% workforce reduction.

The Doge crew claims they'll replace everything with AI. What they're really saying is: you won't be able to reach anyone when your check doesn't show up."
