This week, the US health department announced a plan to ban prescription fluoride supplements for children.

The FDA will work to pull fluoride supplements for children from the market, the agency announced Tuesday. The move comes at the same time as a wave of bills aiming to restrict use of the mineral, which has long been added to public water supplies because it can prevent cavities.

... Both the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend fluoridating community water and advise prescribing fluoride supplements for children who do not get adequate fluoride dosages through their water.

Nevertheless, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under anti-vaccine advocate and conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy Jr states without clear evidence that fluoride supplements harm children's microbiome and pose other health risks.

The ADA pushed back strongly, telling Ars Technica in a written statement that the scientific studies the HHS references as evidence of harms "do not in fact demonstrate any harmful effects for the concentrations of fluoride prescribed by physicians and dentists." ...

... A decades-old dental health treatment may soon vanish in the United States. Access to fluoride supplements, prescribed to prevent cavities in children without access to fluoridated water, is now under threat from a controversial move by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The agency announced May 13 that it plans to remove fluoride products that can be ingested by children from the market, citing concerns about potential harm to gut microbes, links to thyroid disorders, weight gain and decreased IQ. ...

... "It is a complete mystery to me why they think that this is an appropriate way to make the American public healthier," says Scott Tomar, a dentist and epidemiologist at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. The decision, he says, "is based on some of the flimsiest evidence that I've seen."

Fluoride supplements have been used for decades, Tomar notes, and have proven safe and effective for decreasing cavities. The FDA is leaning on studies in noncomparable settings, such as rural China, where there is high exposure to fluoride from burning coal indoors, he says.

"They're exposed to fluoride in their food and their drinking water and in the air, in addition to all the other combustion products in that air. And on top of that, they're in areas with very high levels of fluoride in their contaminated surface water," Tomar says. "We would never allow that level of exposure, or anything remotely close to that level of exposure, in the United States." ...

Oral problems can lead to serious heart valve damage.

This is the stupidest action that could be taken, and very short-sighted considering associated medical costs down the line.

I was hoping to come to the comments to see balanced conversations, or at least some comments with logic. But, alas, it's just not possible on DR.

I think it's freaking hilarious that if you were to get rid of any partisan language at all, the detractors of this would seem Republic and the supporters would see Dem. The billions involved in the fluoride industry and the buddy-buddy system used to determine which companies profit from adding it to the water due to the government forcing it is right out of the Republican handbook...yet here we are, liberals doing everything they can to protect big business hypocritically because partisan politics is much more important to most of you than actually clinging to your principles.

Try to deny it. I can probably do 5 minutes of research on DR alone that would yield hundreds of examples of liberals demonizing every single legislation passed by Reps that mandate something and calling out the profits made by the companies who benefit from the mandates. Liberals didn't believe their own hypocrisy when Biden started mandating EV and EV infrastructure, mostly just ignoring how much money liberal-owned businesses were standing to make from the mandates. But here is another shining example that you can't deny.

But, going down the illogical rabbit hole liberals tend to go to when you call out their hypocrisy and they can't do anything to deny it, the most obvious rebuttal will be that liberals only do it when it's morally right...such as ensuring people get what they need for healthy teeth. But, the easy response to that is simple, you are FORCING it on people. You are removing freedoms from people because you feel it should be forced on them. Just like when Reps FORCE liberals to not be able to get abortions. You liberals whine and cry about that and say how it's the woman's body and the government shouldn't be able to control it. Well, welcome to inconvenient reality...it's my body so you forcing me to ingest something I don't want to ingest means you are trying to control my body.

Then, even more down the rabbit hole, liberals can say "Well, you can always drink bottled water and not be forced to drink the fluoride in tap water." Which is a double whammy on your side since 1) that also caters to big business and 2) that disproportionately negatively impacts lower income people.

So, please, enlighten us how this entire article and your viewpoint isn't the EXACT same thing Reps do. But because it is a Rep who supports it, you all of a sudden don't. Not because of any logic or principles, no. It's solely because your ego must be stroked at all costs and you can't stand when someone doesn't agree with everything you say and do.

Thus, saying your actions are not what is best for America is more accurate than any argument you have given so far. And this isn't an indictment of just Dems, this is both sides. It's just that this example is a shining one that exposes how bad partisan sheep are for this country.

That's not Republicanism.
That's just government funding of anything works.

Democrats support fluoridation because they support public health.
Republicans oppose fluoridation because they think it's waste, fraud, and abuse for the government to promote public health.

Also known as Potty Training.

Now tell us your feelings about those laws saying you can't cross the double yellow line on the road. Those laws take your freedom away!

So, please, enlighten us how this entire article and your viewpoint isn't the EXACT same thing Reps do.

The viewpoint that distinguishes the two parties is who is intended to be the primary beneficiary of their policies. If the intended primary beneficiary is the general public, it's something that democrats/liberals can support. If the intended primary beneficiary is the wealthy business owner, it's something that republicans/conservatives support.

As with any policy that is enacted, businesses will rush in to provide whatever products and/or services that would result from the policy. That business benefits from a left leaning policy is not a reason to conclude that the parties are the same.

The fluoride used in municipal drinking water is not elemental fluoride. It's a compound(s) derived from industrial fertilizer production. It's poison that needs an outlet.

So here we have liberals AGAIN advocating for a toxic by product being placed in their drinking water.

But hey, I'm not here to tell you that you can't ingest the ----. By all means go get you some.

You think elemental fluoride stays elemental when you put it in tap water? Basic high school chemistry should tell you what's wrong with that.

You should have finished high school. You'd be a happier and all-around better person.

"It's poison that needs an outlet."

If that's true, there would clearly be multiple studies showing higher mortality rates and shortened life spans in fluoridated areas.

Link away; as it stands, the claim doesn't pass the smell test.
