The Country survived the 60's. The assassination of JFK, RFK and MLK, the Democratic Convention riots in Chicago, the Vietnam War protests, etc. I lived through that, and i am still here.
Will the Country survive Pres Trump's assault upon Democracy to institute autocracy in the Country?
I wish I knew, but I remain hopeful.

The country survived a lot of things.
But it's never had a president and party who are determined on turning our democratic nation into an authoritarian one.
Even during the time of Nixon, the Republican party remained faithful to America.
Conservatives put America ahead of the president.
I don't see that happening currently in today's America.

Ironically, a high corporate income tax would be an effective means to stimulate capital investment in America, which is maybe the only thing Republicans want that isn't bad for America.
But they're simply too greedy not to kill the golden goose.
Raising corporate tax rates would be hugely more effective than imposing tariffs at stimulating domestic investment. Not that I'm so delusional as to believe the tariffs are actually expected or intended to result in significant investment in America, of course.

The longer the shutdown goes on, the more people will blame the GOP. It may be an over simplification, but most people view the GOP as in control of all the levers of government, including all of Congress. It seems common sense that they would be able to end this showdown if they were willing to compromise.
And just wait until all those firings and layoffs Trump keeps promising kick in. He is going to be shocked by the negative backlash to himself personally.

Shriekback - This Big Hush (1985) www.youtube.com
Lyrics excerpt ...
genius.com
... [Verse] Is there a fire in the sky? Is there a moon up there? Is there anything alive now? This darkness is what I hear This is a breathless silence A moment out of time I see your face in the shadows The telltale signs are in your eyes [Chorus] More than I can hold in my hands Running through the gaps like water Aching with a passion inside Deep as the river All desire, the ashes and the fire Turning this night inside and the light from you [Verse] Is there a flame in the dark? Is there a bright hard star? These creatures look the same now We freeze wherever we are We wake alone in the blackness We sleep wherever we fall One dream all around us This big hush infects us all ...
This darkness is what I hear This is a breathless silence A moment out of time I see your face in the shadows The telltale signs are in your eyes
[Chorus] More than I can hold in my hands Running through the gaps like water Aching with a passion inside Deep as the river All desire, the ashes and the fire Turning this night inside and the light from you
