This is the second time the court has rejected lower court rulings that immigrants must be able to object before being sent to countries to which they have no previous connection.

The Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in December in a challenge by immigrants to the government's practice of deporting them to countries that are not identified in their removal orders - a procedure known as "third-country removals."[image or embed]

Hey, look on the bright side, it may be an upgrade compared to where they originally came from.

We're not sure if this is legal or not but you can keep sending people to third world hell holes where they will be in extreme personal danger until we get around to making a decision is a ridiculous position for any court to take.

What decision? The removal order has been executed, and the 6 month detention is about to expire.
Understand the country they came from doesn't want them, typically they just ignore the US request to accept the person.
That's the risk the person took when they left their home country to cross illegally into another.

If you only have connections in a country that doesn't want you, what is the US to do?

So ... I don't totally understand this. If someone is under threat of being deported, what is not compelling them to go to a country of their own choosing.

I don't know for sure, but if Germany wanted to deport me, I'm pretty sure they just care about me leaving Germany. They don't care where I go, so long as I go.

Is that not true with regards to US deportation policy?

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Is this attitude privledge?
Arrogance?
Ignorance?

A combination? Most likely

the deportees don't have the resources
the country(ies) that they would be a more natural fit are dangerous to them
the cruelty is the point

People love zero tolerance policies until they come back to bite them or someone close to them.

Laws do need to be enforced, but how would you like to be tased and beaten up every time you get caught driving one mile-per-hour over the speed limit?

Should people who were trafficked to the US against their will when they were young be treated the same way as violent criminals and people who made a conscious decision to immigrate illegally? I don't think so.

How much collateral damage to US Citizens and Legal Residents is worth it to pressure agents to meet quotas? If you think you're immune from that just because your papers are in order, think again.

What decision?

You really should ready things before you comment on them.

"The justices, with the court's three liberals dissenting, granted an emergency request filed by the government seeking to block an appeals court ruling that said the current process is unlawful because the affected people are not given a proper chance to raise concerns about safety risks in violation of federal immigration law.

In the brief unsigned order, the court also said it would hear oral arguments in December and issue a definitive ruling on the legal questions raised in the litigation."

How is being deported into a country you've never been in before NOT cruel and unusual?

"Is this attitude privledge?"

Quite the contrary. Privilege would be thinking that, being from country A, country B had an obligation to allow you to stay, even if you lacked the prerequisites to be in country B.

I am in Germany because they allow me to be here. If they elected to boot me, would you think them as being cruel?

"the deportees don't have the resources the country(ies) that they would be a more natural fit are dangerous to them the cruelty is the point."

I'm intrigued by your notion of a country being a "natural fit" for someone. Can you define that further?

If my unemployed, dirt-poor daughter was to be deported from Germany back to the US, would that constitute cruelty on the part of the German government? From my vantage point, I don't think so. Even though the US is vastly more dangerous than Germany.

"How is being deported into a country you've never been in before NOT cruel and unusual?"

In the case of the eight people sent to South Sudan, their own countries refused to accept them. They were all criminals.

Not saying it's right or wrong, but what should be done with them? Just keep them in prison in the US forever? They were in the country illegally, so to me that would seem the only logical option...unless you wanted to somehow offer residency or citizenship to illegals with criminal records, just because no one else wanted them. Including their own countries of origin.

Good question.

I'm still not quite clear on whether the anti-ICE crowd is against deportations, or against the perception of cruelty towards those who will be deported. I'm all for deportation, but cruelty is an emotional response unrelated to the fact that someone is in the country illegally.

I don't know why a CBP guy would act cruelly to someone who showed up in the US without valid entry credentials. You just send them home and that's that.

Quite the contrary.

I want you to tell me your position. My daughter has spent about half her life in Germany. In less than 18 months, her legal status to stay in this country will expire.

What should Germany do? Expel her, which I would imagine you would view as being cruel and hateful, or grant her some sort of residency status because she has been here.

Technically, she has been in the country legally since 2019, so she does have a history of legal residency. Does that make it more or less cruel to deport her?
