An editorial in the Chicago Tribune laments what might have been had "Kenneth C. Griffin not become so frustrated with the state of Illinois as to move himself and much of the financial company he founded, Citadel, to Miami." The Tribune is responding to the news that Mr. Griffin is moving a whole lot more to Florida after departing the expensive dysfunction of Illinois governance.

A billionaire leaving a State simply means that he is giving the burden of running the State to the poor and middle class.

Like he has always done.

Yup.

The billionaires that leave a state simply seem to be saying that they do not want to contriute their fair share to the good of the state.

Problems? According to folks like clownshack, the wealthy are parasites who steal from everyone else.

This is a good thing for Illinois.

What is this, the education thread? =P

Now it's just a loss. Not a theoretical tax cut, or tax breaks for R&D "we lost money!", a direct loss because a company decided Miami was the place to be and it's worth asking 2500 employees to relocate.

While his net worth went from $8B to $49.8B in that decade.

So, $1B in state taxes for over $40B in net worth increase?

A less than a 2.5% tax rate on that increase?

Those are unrealized gains.

The idea that someone has to sell personal property to pay taxes on the same property should make a true liberal cringe.

Their actual income gets taxed, corporate income gets taxed. If they use it on a loan that's not a gain, that's a debt obligation.

4.95% to the state and 37% to the fed of whatever income he has... or 100% of $0. Illinois chose the latter. Now they can raise taxes on the middle class to try and make it up.

Yeah, the tax laws put in place to benefit the wealthy.

Probably why the wealthy are abusing the IRA laws.

Rich Americans use IRAs to make tax-free millions. Is that fair?

@#21 ... Fed still gets their cut ...

Maybe you are [purposefully?] overlooking the major tax cut for wealthy bill that Pres Trump pushed through Congress, increasing our national debt by trillions.

And now Pres Trump is complaining about the interest rates needed to finance his debt.

The very rich have a special obligation to their country. I should not have to explain why.

I'm sick of the American rich identifying with their class and not their nation.

Nope. Not overlooking it. Upper tax bracket for 2025/26 is 37%. In 2027 it's still 37%. In 2028 it's 37%. OBBBA locked those in. The pre-2018 rate was 39.6%.

2.6% didn't cause trillions more in debt, Congressional spending priorities, signed and also pushed for by Trump, did.
