America had vocational programs like that too. Once upon a time in the Before Times.
Before the Reagan years.
But we moved in a bipartisan fashion away from the trades to focus on education. Because of the "rising tide of mediocrity" (which has now become a Tsunami of Mediocrity.)
In April 1983, the commission"chaired by University of California President David P. Gardner"released the landmark report A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform. The authors used urgent, Cold War-style language, warning that a "rising tide of mediocrity" in public schools threatened America's economic survival. To fix this, the report demanded a rigorous, standardized curriculum for all students, including four years of English and three years each of math, science, and social studies. This academic mandate squeezed elective trade classes right out of the school day.
What we NEED to do is extend the school year to year round instead of cutting valuable programs like vocational training or arts or math and science and for Gawds sake SOCIAL STUDIES!
It's no wonder we have such an Anti-social media.
I did not join to kill commies. I did not join to become part of the machine.
I joined to learn about it. To get the best training I could get and get the best career I could get out of it while at the same time learning how my own government worked.
I do have to admit.. it was kind of a fantasy job. We got to play with all the cool toys.
But even as an "Airdale" we still had to do guard dooty.
Every Marine is a rifleman and don't you ever forget it. They reminded us every six months by giving us a rifle (our rifle from the armory where we kept them!) and sending us off to do guard dooty somewhere.
Will never forget locking and loading on a helicopter that flew too close to our ammo dump we were guarding. (The CCC was looking for an escaped prisoner) or that officer who approached my post without presenting his ID. Boy did he regret that day.
Those were the days ... We almost got to shoot that helo down! And I got to put that officers Dick in dirt.
