According to an article I just read, a small town in Minnesota called Emo was fined tens of thousands of dollars because didn't celebrate pride month. Supposedly not doing so was a violation of a human rights code.

I drove from Santa Clara to Austin in '83, pulling my '76 Alpha Romeo Spyder behind a Uhaul truck, right across New Mexico. The cat had gotten off in La Joya... but that's another story.

Stopped at a rest area where the local tribe had it's wares laid out on blankets, and bought a sand painting of a dancing warrior from the artist. Still have it.

There's some beautiful spots out there, and I almost went again last year, but turned back at Big Spring and went to the Great Lakes, where I'd never been, instead.

Now the only place I haven't been is the Pacific NW, and I'd love to do that drive.

Definitely don't miss out. I haven't seen anywhere near it all but I got hooked immediately. Drove the Williamette Valley which was beautiful but still paled in comparison to the drive to the coast and on the coast. The drive from Eugene to Florence was incredible, especially the last third or so along a river in this deep valley with pine covered, steep sided mountains on both sides. Ended up staying in this little A frame Air B&B in Bandon, OR.

This was the view right across the street.

One of the highlights was going to Neah Bay, an Indian reservation at the NW point of the contiguous 48 states. We were turned on to a guy who'd buy the first catch of salmon every morning, and smoke it. Best fish I've ever had: swimming in the morning, smoked for lunch. Yum!
