Invisible Hand Meet Tiny Hand

For decades, a core part of the Republican Party's identity was the whole-hearted embrace of free-market capitalism. Adam Smith's "invisible hand" of the market was understood to be infinitely preferable to government meddling. Lately, though, President Donald Trump has been having second thoughts. Forget the invisible hand -- what about, uh, Trump's hand? The second Trump administration has cut a revenue-sharing agreement with Nvidia, it's taken partial control of US Steel, it's considering taking a stake in Intel, and it's created a loyalty ranking system for US companies. And did we mention that Trump has taken to brow-beating companies into not raising their prices in response to tariffs?

He's a Trumpist... an extreme narcissist; actually a full blown Dark Triad personality with psychopathic tendencies.

Seems more like a Feudal type system. A Fiefdom or something. I'm not a political science historian so I don't know the best term but it works like this:
The King gets a piece of all the action.
The rule of law is significantly weakened, and at the King's discretion.
The King has his own loyal militia (ICE) that he commands directly and gets most of the funding to do police stuff.

Republicans think that's an improvement over all these stupid meeting and reconciliation process between House and Senate. What has all that gotten in in 200 years? Why have fifty states when we can have a single unified leader?

This is all true of feudalism, but is not quite complete.

The King had to keep the majority of his Lords (private militia) happy or they'd kill him and hope the next King would be better.
The peasants had a place to live under the protection of the Lords or the King himself, and every peasant that could work had a job, even if it sucked ass (probably quite literally for some).
There was some give and a lot of take.

For example, King Henry VIII is not considered a feudal King. Feudalism had given way to more centralized power during the Tudor period (~1500 - ~1600).

Trump is a lot like Henry.

OpEd: Is MAGA going Marxist and Maoist? Trump's assault on free-market capitalism
fortune.com

... As many CEOs understandably grew horrified last month at the prospect that New York City, the capital of capitalism, is on the brink of going socialist with the mayoral momentum of the inexperienced candidate Zohran Mamdani, they were ignoring the greater assault on free market capitalism that has already overtaken the nation in the Republican Party. While we agree that Mamdani's solutions to affordable housing and grocery prices threaten to undermine free markets by bowing to the appeal of populist anger, President Donald Trump has already begun doing so, but to suit his own grandiose political agenda instead.

Unlike any leader of any free-market economy around the world, President Trump has seized control of private enterprise's strategic decision-making and investment policies while invading corporate board rooms so that he may dictate leadership staffing, punish corporate critics, and demand public compliance with his political agenda. This is far more dangerous to capitalism than a city-run grocery store.

Many free-market economists and business leaders who have long worshipped the free-market ideals of Adam Smith, Friedrich Hayek, Ayn Rand, and Milton Friedman should be aware that their idols would be rolling in their graves right now, as rather than pursue standard laissez-faire conservative economic policies, MAGA has gone Marxist and even, increasingly, Maoist.

As Greg Ip warned this week in The Wall Street Journal, "The US marches toward state capitalism with American characteristics ... President Trump is imitating [the] Chinese Communist Party by extending political control ever deeper into the economy." Ip pointed out that in the past, crisis-driven government bailouts of the banking and automotive sectors, such as TARP, were acute, targeted assistance, with brief and bipartisan rescue aims. Similarly, government incentives to drive investments in chips manufacturing, oil exploration, space exploration, internet development, agricultural vitality, cancer detection, disease treatment, and clean energy were not ownership deals with preferred companies or corporate cronies.

Indeed, Ip's warnings mirror our own, as we were the first to accurately, presciently warn"over a year ago"that many of Trump's economic positions more closely resemble communism than capitalism, as part of what we called "the coming MAGA assault on capitalism." It certainly looks like MAGA is going Marxist if not even Maoist, especially across Trump's vicious personal targeting of individual business leaders; government crackdown on business freedom of expression; weaponization of government powers; apparent extortion of businesses; and insertion of government into an unprecedented, outsized role in private sector strategic investment, capital flows and business decision-making. ...

Quite the roster of authors for that OpEd ...

"Just like Madbomber said Hitler was."

Hitler was the head of the German National Socialist Workers Party. It's sorta in the name.

But, like most socialists, he wasn't actually a socialist. Socialism is a system where the workers own the means of production. That's never happened anywhere. Not even Bernie is a true socialist. In fact he might be a bigger proponent of capitalism than I am. He's just anti-free market.

Trump is taking the US in a corporatist direction. In that way, he is shaping the economy into something much closer to what you would see in western Europe. I'm not a fan, but it's not unprecedented.

#17 | Posted by madbomber at 2025-08-24 05:18 AM

Actually, closer to Russia.

" Hitler was the head of the German National Socialist Workers Party. It's sorta in the name."

Using that logic, Saddam Husseins Republican Guard were all Republicans.

Meanwhile, back in the real world ... Hitler used the socialist party to get power, then either executed or jailed the leading socialists, and ruled as a dictator.

His plan was to trick people into thinking he was a socialist. Congratulations on falling for his ruse!

Carly Simon - It Was So Easy (1972)
www.youtube.com

Lyrics excerpt ...

genius.com

...
I remember a time, rompin' through the woods
Sun against our skin instead of clothes
When we felt hungry we would eat, when we felt glad we'd dance
And whenever we felt drowsy we would doze

It was so easy then, never takin' any stands
It was so easy then, holdin' hands

I remember a time when our fears could be named
And courage meant not refusing dares
I remember when we took such cares to step never on the cracks
Not only in the squares
Or else we'd be abducted by the bears

It was so easy then, never makin' any plans
It was so easy then, holdin' hands
...

Meh, same ideologies as always. Some people (cons) want everyone to be on their own regardless of people who may need a little help and some people (liberals) want mommy and daddy to run their lives because they don't want to give any effort.

Neither side is going to agree and since America lost the ability to compromise shortly after the Constitution was signed, we will never get anywhere in this discussion.

#22 | Posted by humtake at 2025-08-25 12:05 PM

Some people (cons) want everyone to be on their own

Is that why you pissants need the National Guard to make you feel safe?

#23 | Posted by reinheitsgebot at 2025-08-25 12:14 PM

Meh, same ideologies as always.

Republicans today are not Lincoln Republicans.

Democrats today are not Dixie Democrats.

Are you trying to write history for 2 year olds?

The fact is progressives and liberals have pushed the Dem party to the left in order to help the poor abd disadvantaged and bring balance and fairness to the justice system and the opportunity for economic prosperity to all.

And Republicans now want to reverse any those gains and move in the opposite direction of fairness and equal rights for all to an authoritarian and restrictive oppressive police state.

Not the "same ideologies" as the past. And definitely NOT NORMAL.

#24 | Posted by donnerboy at 2025-08-25 12:25 PM

"And Republicans now want to reverse any those gains and move in the opposite direction of fairness and equal rights for all to an authoritarian and restrictive oppressive police state."

I seem to catch this when people include the word "now" where I don't understand how they can believe it's actually "now".

The republicans NOW want to "reverse any those gains and move in the opposite direction"..........??

Because the left has been accusing the GOP of this at least since Reagan. That's a 45 year old accusation at the least.

Is that your definition of "now" or do you think it's really "now" and not the past 45 years?

#25 | Posted by eberly at 2025-08-25 12:38 PM

POSTED BY EBERLY

"Now" is where we live. And now it is worse than ever. Even under Nixon it wasn't this bad.

Republicans would never have tolerated what Trumpy is doing now to our federal system of government. They definitely would not have tolerated usurping congressional power of the purse.

Should we survive it, "now" will be remembered as another dark chapter in American history. And yes we have had a few. Even as Trumpy tries to literally "white wash" American history and remove any "dark" stuff from our museums it does have and will always have few dark chapters.

#26 | Posted by donnerboy at 2025-08-25 12:55 PM

Republican voters are such dupes. Censorship! Government control! Rigged elections! Socialism! Armed military patrolling the streets!

All brought to you by Trump and Republican voters themselves.

#27 | Posted by Derek_Wildstar at 2025-08-25 01:11 PM

Tiny hands fucks up everything he touches.

The GOP has been coddling the rich and trying to take away Social Services since at least Reagan.

That said, Trump is clearly worse on Every level than the Previous republican administrations.

For One thing: Trump is Blatantly Lawless on many levels.

The Republicans just Don't Care because he's "Hurting," the Right People.

Eb's, are you one of Those?

Or do you want to see more of them hurt?
