Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

Michael Areceneaux: According to a report released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2022, as many as 44.2 million people lived in households that had difficulty getting enough food to feed everyone - an increase from 33.8 million the year prior - and that figure included more than 13 million children facing food insecurity. Congress actually did something to try to directly aid children suffering from this national shame. Regrettably, more than 15 Republican governors have said that they will turn down federal money to feed low-income children.

Some have given reasons, dumb as they may sound. Like Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, who said she saw no need for the extra money for hungry kids "when childhood obesity has become an epidemic."

I suppose I should not be surprised that the person who endorsed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis for president could sound so empty and evil in her thinking.

Other Republican governors, as The Washington Post noted in its story about the GOP pushback on helping fight child hunger in America, were even more blunt.

"I don't believe in welfare," Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen explained when asked why he rejected the money.

Pillen ultimately changed his mind after Nebraska state Sen. Jen Day, a Democrat, introduced a bill to require participation and found a Republican ally as well as a swell of support from voters in rural areas.

It was a mistake to not use political capital to pressure Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) into supporting the continued expansion of the child tax credit, which cut child poverty in half.

It would be another mistake to allow Republicans - and their Democrat-when-convenient friend - to wield their power to hurt American children. If Republicans could falsely brand Democrats as "groomers," they should be branded as pro-child starvation.

WWJD? Obviously, stop the federal government from providing food to hungry children, naturally.

Sometimes conservative politics is akin to an intentionally cognitive dissonant mental disease, totally devoid of empathy and compassion. At other times - like this - it's also abject cruelty and forced suffering thrust onto the backs of those already struggling to merely stand up from the weight of life's burdens placed upon them, many times beyond their personal control.

There is no reason that every person espousing real morality shouldn't fight for Americans struggling to feed themselves and their families. And state leaders who refuse to allow federal government assistance to reach these children and families should be personally shamed and shunned for the barbarism such humane indifference reflects.

15 states run by Republicans turned down money to feed kids.

It was in the article you didn't read before rushing to the comments section to flap your woefully ignorant yapper.

People don't have enough money to feed their kids under this president but it's the Republican's fault? Seriously?

You need to remove the fish scales from your eyes and comprehend what's clearly written.

YES, it's Republican governor's faults for unilaterally refusing to allow these needy children to receive food benefits that Congress and this President legislated for them to have!

Are you really that dense that you can't understand this simple reality?

"People don't have enough money to feed their kids under this president but it's the Republican's fault? Seriously?"

So what's your angle here.
Is it their own fault, for having kids while poor?

When all the forced births start eating, will the children starve?

Sounds like that is the Republican goal.

The 15 Republican governors who turned down money to feed kids all claim to be "pro-life," right?

How is that "pro-life?"

Just another example "pro-life" Republicans are anything BUT. Embryos? Yes. Born human beings? No.

Puling hypocrites is what they are.

Definitely a headline fail. People do not die of starvation in this country. Some do go through periods of hunger and that is wrong in a country as wealthy as this one. But even low income neighborhoods have soup kitchens and food drives.

No headline fail, just reality. Would you please STFU you ignorant fool!

U.S. Malnutrition Deaths Have More Than Doubled

April 13, 2023

The same trend occurred nationwide, with malnutrition deaths more than doubling, from about 9,300 deaths in 2018 to roughly 20,500 in 2022, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

I've never seen someone so obsessed with proving that they know so very little about things they pontificate about.

And in anticipation of a probable reply, there's this:

Starvation is a state of severe malnutrition due to a reduction in macro- and micronutrient intake.

"Definitely a headline fail. People do not die of starvation in this country."

You are being so "disgrateful"!

Someone is definitely incapable of comprehending headlines.

Headlines does not say kids are "dying". They are starving. Or "food insecure" if you wish to be more gentle and mild about it.

But according to the latest estimates, as many as 13 million children in the United States live in "food insecure" homes. That phrase may sound mild, but it means that those households don't have enough food for every family member to lead a healthy life.

And Republicans and your support of them helped build that!

Tony Roma,

Did you even bother to read your own link:

" Malnutrition is particularly common among older people, especially those who are ill, low-income, homebound, or without reliable access to healthy food or medical services. It can result from not eating enough but also from poor eating habits that lead to nutritional deficiencies. The majority of deaths in California from malnutrition last year occurred in residents 85 and older.

Several experts said COVID lockdowns likely cut off access to healthy food. Because the oldest people were the most likely to die from COVID, officials encouraged them to limit their exposure to others who might have the disease."

Covid lockdowns exacerbated the problem. The state your link focused on was California. On this thread you are blaming the issue on GOP governors (because of course you are) but the problem is really related to old age and the problems inherent with that and isn't really political at all.

Damn son, are you really that touched in the head that you can't even comprehend that the above destroys your ignorant assertion? The ------- headline says "U.S. ... Deaths ...".

Does "nationwide" mean California? You said "(P)eople do not die of starvation," yet 20,500 died in 2022 and 9,300 died in 2018, 2 years BEFORE covid.

The government could hand out a Humanitarian Daily Ration (cost $4.70) to each of the 20.5k USans who died of starvation, and starvation in the US ends.

Y' just gotta get them to eat it.

People don't die of starvation due to a lack of food in this country. We are not Ethiopia. It's amazing how much food gets thrown away on a daily basis in this country. A a slight improvement in our delivery systems and access and this problem pretty much goes away.

The federal government tried to feed kids in a way that is more aligned with existing bureaucratic infrastructure and Republicans are doing everything they can to stop it.

You can dance around that fact all you want but it's the truth. Your party is sick.

To quote the great George Carlin, "Republicans, love the fetus, hate the child." No wonder young women who unintentionally get pregnant choose abortion, especially if they are single and live in a red state, having a child as a single person of limited means RUINS YOUR LIFE! But then about 60% of women who get abortions already have kids, they know how that extra mouth, especially thanks to Rethugs, means less for all the kids. The GQP really hates kids, poor kids, brown kids, Ukrainian kids, pretty much all but the kids of uneducated white MAGAts.
