"Gotland, around 200 miles north of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, is Sweden's largest island and its seizure by Moscow could threaten NATO countries from the sea. This could end "peace and stability in the Nordic and Baltic regions," Byden said, "the Baltic Sea should not turn into Putin's playground."

"The document, dated May 21, suggests Moscow wants to declare part of the waters in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland on its border with Lithuania and the area near the towns of Baltiysk and Zelenogradsk in the Kaliningrad region as internal waters.

Russia claims that previous geographic coordinates were registered relying on small-scale marine navigation maps based on 20th-century research that do not properly reflect the region's maritime borders.

But Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea contains provisions on the definition of maritime zones of coastal states and that "we assume that Russia, as a party to the Convention, will act accordingly."

Welcome back to the Age of Empires. Moscow and Beijing and have openly declared their intentions to be aggressive hegemons in the 21st Century. The rest of the world needs to wake up before the descendants of the Mongol Hordes show up at their doorstep again.

The Kremlin has said that Russia must take steps to ensure its security over "confrontation in the Baltic" amid alarm and uncertainty over Moscow's plans to change its maritime border with Lithuania and Finland.

In a summary of his press briefing on Wednesday, Tass reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked about state borders in the Baltic.

"The level of confrontation in the Baltic region requires Russia to take steps to ensure its security," Peskov said, according to state-run news agency Tass. "The situation in the world requires in-depth dialogue to find ways out of tension, but the collective West rejects it."

Why not have high levels talks with the Russians?

Why is that bad?

Clarify spheres of influence, etc. By treaty.

It's better than World War and Nuclear Armageddon...

@#6 ... Why not have high levels talks with the Russians?
Why is that bad? ...

Maybe such talks were already attempted, and Pres Putin's expansionist goals have negated any positive outcome from those talks.

In other words, why is Pres Putin pursuing an unprovoked invasion of a sovereign country?

Has Pres Putin shown that the time for talking is in the past?

@#6

As a follow-up question...

Why has Pres Putin's aim for expansionism driven a historically peaceful country (Sweden) to ask for, and attain, NATO membership?

"Why not have high levels talks with the Russians?"

If you look into Putin's soul all you will see are the letters K G B. They are all KGB now. You obviously never had any experience dealing with the KGB.

"Russian leadership also exhibit a level of near paranoia that makes negotiation with them problematic in the extreme."

As for trying to take over the Baltic Sea I say go for it.

Have they already forgotten about the sea drones that can easily sink their warships?

Ukrainian forces have steadily degraded the Black Sea Fleet, sinking around 15 of its pre-war force of around three dozen large warships"and damaging several others.

It's been rather fun watching the Black Sea fleet turn into the sunken fleet.

There's a Military purge going on now, with the KGB (as the Russian people still call them) replacing Generals and Aides.

This is important because the only force in Russia that can take power from Putin is the Military.

Deputy Chief of Russia's General Staff Arrested for Bribery
www.themoscowtimes.com

... Russia has arrested a general on corruption allegations, state media reported Thursday, making him the third senior-ranking military officer to face fraud-related criminal charges over the past month in an apparent wider crackdown in the Defense Ministry.

A military court placed Lieutenant-General Vadim Shamarin in pre-trial detention until late July, the state-run TASS news agency reported Thursday morning, citing the court.

"On May 22, the court chose a preventive measure for Shamarin in the form of detention for a period of two months," a court official was quoted as saying by the agency.

The official added that Shamarin, who heads the Russian General Staff's communications directorate, is accused of accepting a bribe "at an especially large scale" while awarding state contracts.

Russia's Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, announced later on Thursday that the general is accused of accepting 36 million rubles ($397,000) from the executives of a phone manufacturing plant for "general patronage" and ensuring higher product supplies through Defense Ministry contracts. ...

"Clarify spheres of influence, etc. By treaty."

Spheres of influence cannot be defined by treaty. They are defined by the relationships between countries. Russia's spheres of influence have been fading, mostly because the country's relevance has been fading.

Finland, Latvia, Poland...they could have freely aligned with Russia, but they gain more, and maybe more importantly lose less, by partnering with the west. They've experienced the Russian bootheel, and don't seem to want it back.

Why has Pres Putin's aim for expansionism driven a historically peaceful country (Sweden) to ask for, and attain, NATO membership?

When the Soviet Union collapsed, there were 12 countries in NATO. Now there are 32.

None of them were compelled to join NATO...they chose to.

US counter-maritime capabilities are -------. Our NATO partners...not so much.

If deployed, the partners could easily neutralize the Baltic Sea Fleet, in port or out of port.

For this reason, it's pretty easy to scoff Putin's threat. He has no way to back it up, and I think he knows it. He as to know it.

It's like someone in a wheelchair threatening to kick your ass. Why even bother responding?

"This will probably make them a better fighting force."

No. But it will make them less of a threat to Putin.

To be better fighters would require more independence. More independence would mean a greater threat to the Putin regime.

Putin's government has already shown it places a premium on loyalty over competence. Ref Shoygu.

Europe should just CRUSH Kaliningrad and be done with it. They should then
send the tattered and stained flag of Kaliningrad back to Moscow wrapped in
an ornate box with a pretty bow, and have it handed it to Vlad.

And inside the box that contains the tattered flag, a simple
pristine vanilla colored card with a single word emblazoned upon it.

NYET!

"Europe should just CRUSH Kaliningrad and be done with it."

???

K-Grad is easily the most European city within the Russian empire.

It was a German city-Koenigsberg-until the end of WWII, when Russia began annexing various properties across Europe. There are still secessionists within K-Grad. I don't think they want to be German again...just not part of the commie federation.

- Clearing out the Crooks.

That's because you make the mistake of believing everything Putin says... much like any Trumper.

Fraud, Lying, and Stealing are part and parcel of Military SOP in Russia.

What Putin is doing is ridding the the Top Brass of people who might be disloyal enough to stage a military coup, which is the only thing he fears.

And of course they have every reason to do so considering Putin's habit of putting unqualified loyalists in top Military positions... which also happens to make fighting a war really hard on the Frontline Commanders.

I agree with MB on this Baltic talk being nonsense... it's more likely a distraction while he culls the Military brass of non-loyalists.

"Fraud, Lying, and Stealing are part and parcel of Military SOP in Russia."

I don't know that this is true. I think there are honest officers in the Russian military, but that doesn't matter if you get sideways with the boss.

I have no doubts that a military prosecutor could go back and review my service record and find something they considered fraudulent. Not getting the cheapest rental car, claiming cab fare for a trip where I could have used a bus...that sort of thing.

"Graft in Russia functions as both a carrot and stick. It's a way of "encouraging loyalty and urging people to be on the same page," as well as a method of control, said Sam Greene, director of Democratic Resilience at the Center for European Policy Analysis.

Putin wants everyone to have "a skeleton in their closet," security expert Mark Galeotti said on a recent podcast. If the state has compromising material on key officials, it can cherry-pick whom to target, he added.

Corruption, "is the essence of the system," said Nigel Gould-Davies, senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.

The war in Ukraine has led to ballooning defense spending that has increased opportunities for graft."

apnews.com

Article purports that is the graft and the spending out of control, almost 7 percent, Soviet era numbers.

I doubt that's why Vlad jumped on a jet to Belarus the other day.

"It sounds like the Russians are doing something we should be doing to our own military."

Sounds like someone who has never served his country a day in their life.

Also

Sounds like you have no clue (as usual) about reliability, discipline or readiness of our military.

What Russias military really needs is sergeants to help build trust and loyalty (and discipline) so that the troops will trust their leaders.

And the only coup happening around here came from DJT and his hateful ignorant maga maroons. But unfortunately for them (and fortunately for the rest of us) the US military refused to support any of Trump's traitorous nonsense.

I was talking more about procurement than actual military corruption in the ranks.

The US does have decent military ethics aside from the procurement process.

War is always about the Benjamin's.

For example, the Pentagon has never passed an Audit. Ever.

Now why is that? Why even bother to audit the military?

It's all so Secret. So Important. So above any deeper scrutiny.

For National Security.

It's like Tithes for the Secular, in this country.

That's a Problem.
