In January 2025, the U.S. Air Force removed a video about the Tuskegee Airmen from its basic training curriculum at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. This decision followed an executive order signed by President Donald Trump that banned diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across the federal government. The Tuskegee Airmen were pioneering Black pilots renowned for their service during World War II. Their inclusion in the training curriculum was intended to highlight the Air Force's historical diversity and the significant contributions of African American service members.

I think this is a poor implementation of what I read of the actual OPM order of anti-DEI stuff. Some military departments are in full CYA mode, cutting things wholesale and also getting rid of ombudsmen, which is an important part of comms when units are deployed or at training.

The Tuskegee Airmen, women cryptologists of WWII (such as Elizabeth Friedman and her crew), or WWII Windtalkers group should in no way be seen as DEI when they had outsized contributions to their LOEs.

Trump didn't remove the video, The class that it was shown in was a DEI class, and the class was removed. The mentioned video, along with other content from that class has already announced that it will still be shown, in a different context.

When I went through basic training in the USAF, the only 'history' taught was this one fact - the Air Force was created by the National Security Act of 1947. Prior to that it was The US Army Air Corps.

On a separate note, my son, an Army JAG, just put on his silver oak leaves : ) and later this year he is destined for the Presidio [for that he has my condolences...]
