President Donald Trump's sector-specific tariffs threaten to add fresh fuel to inflation that has remained stubbornly elevated for four years, potentially driving up costs for households at least in the short term.

The orange pedo with a Putin-gaped tuchus will no doubt make an exception for Russian films.

Anyone have any specifics on this tariff?

How does that work if a movie is streamed from an offshore server? Aren't movies streamed to theaters these days?

@#4 ... movies streamed to theaters these days ...

My guess would be along the lines of, if I were a theater operator ...

I would want to download the digital file containing the movie to a local network environment.

That local network environment would contain some manner of a backup so that when the movie theater is full of people ... a local issue, or a network problem to a remote streaming provider, would not affect their movie experience.

But, that's just me....

Most US movies are mostly garbage now, here's why:

www.moviemaker.com

Here's a good ol' movie, not a great one that everyone knows like, The Third Man, but similar noir genre. Directed by Orson Welles, starring Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young, and Welles as the Nazi mastermind of the German Death Camps, tracked down by Robinson in small town America right after the war.

Sounds like Trump's favorite game, stock manipulation.

I dunno about the "garbage" aspect, as I am not a big movie fan.

But then there's this ...

The box office is bleak. Here's how local theaters are surviving the downturn (March 2025)
www.latimes.com

... As the year started, movie theater owner Damon Rubio was feeling optimistic.

His six-location theater chain's revenue projections for January and February were tracking ahead of 2024's weak theatrical grosses. Rubio himself was looking forward to films like Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho's "Mickey 17" and Paramount Pictures' comedic Jack Quaid thriller "Novocaine."

But by the end of February, "things kind of dropped out on us," said Rubio, owner and president of D'Place Entertainment, which operates theaters in California cities including in Barstow, Cathedral City and Bonsall. His chain's revenue is still ahead of last year but only "marginally."

"I wouldn't call it apocalyptic, but I would call it abysmal, so I guess it's a step up," he said with a laugh.

Rubio is luckier than many.

Ahead of this week's CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas, where Hollywood studios present footage of their upcoming films to hype theater owners up for the year ahead, the industry is grappling with a brutal start to the year at the box office. ...

My question ...

Why go to a movie theater where you may have to suffer through the person sitting next to you having a personal trauma on their cell phone?

With the advances of home theater, are movie theaters becoming obsolete?

Asked differently, why go to a movie theater when you have the huge screen in the comfort of your living room?

Why go to the movie theater when you can watch it at home with cheaper eats and drinks.

I hear ya, especially given how good even modest home theater set ups can be. Having said that, watching a flick on the big screen is just fun. The theaters are now set up for maximum comfort and more and more have a full bar.

I agree to a point. IMAX is great if it was filmed for IMAX.

I have a pretty kick ass home system, but I find a lot of theater sound to be just too dang loud.

Even when the person sitting next to you is talking on their cell phone, describing the movie scene by scene to some random person?

Yeah, just fun.

I remember watching "Polar Express" at IMAX and it was 3-D. That was a great experience.

Home audio system here is pretty solid 15Hz up through 23kHz.

If needed, or desired, but rarely used, decibel levels can be in the 120dB range.

Rarely used because neighbors seem to have objections. ;)

And, also, 120dB volume is not successful for future hearing purposes.

Our home system is okay. An 8 year old wall-mounted Samsung 65" flat screen with a decent soundbar and subwoofer. Our lower level layout of the house is weird. Small kitchen and family room paired with a good size living room and dining room with a vaulted ceiling. The small family room does work well for a 65" TV and the sound bar is good enough for that space.
