He's ready:

Trepanning was sometimes performed on people who were behaving in a manner that was considered abnormal. In some ancient societies it was believed this released the evil spirits that were to blame. . . . The primary theories for the practice of trepanation in ancient times include spiritual purposes and treatment for epilepsy, head wounds, mental disorders, and headaches, although the latter may be just an unfounded myth. Studies show that trepanation was used on individuals that were diagnosed with epilepsy, scurvy, frontal sinustis, intracranial disorders, diseases, hydrocephaly, and osteitis.

There was a tiny cult in the 1960s that believed adult human brains were hindered by the skull, the hard shell constricting free thought.

They thought that infants and children with soft skulls allowed the brain and consciousness to "breathe" or "expand," and hence the source of their imagination and innocence.

So, this handful of cultists would shave their heads and drill tiny holes into their skulls.

Apparently they survived this bloody and painful ordeal, but none went on to become the next Oppenheimer, Beethoven, or Shakespeare.

Meet the late Amanda Feilding, the Countess of Wemyss and March, the year this aristocrat underwent voluntary trepanation (1970).
