Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The United States informed the government of Niger on Friday that it agreed to its request to withdraw U.S. troops from the West African country. It is the culmination of a military coup last year that ousted the country's democratically elected government and installed a junta that declared America's military presence there "illegal."

"The prime minister has asked us to withdraw U.S. troops, and we have agreed to do that," a senior State Department official told The Washington Post in an interview. The decision was sealed in a meeting earlier Friday between Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Niger's prime minister, Ali Lamine Zeine.

"We've agreed to begin conversations within days about how to develop a plan" to withdraw troops, said the senior State Department official. "They've agreed that we do it in an orderly and responsible way. And we will need to probably dispatch folks to Niamey to sit down and hash it out. And that of course will be a Defense Department project."

For years, the Pentagon has deployed a mix of mostly Air Force and Army personnel to Niger to support a mission scrutinizing militant groups in the region. Until the coup last year, the arrangement included counterterrorism drones flights and U.S. and Nigerien troops partnering on some patrols.

Well, Matt Gaetz has lost another insipid talking point. I'm sure he and his ilk will simply transition into criticizing the US for losing its recently-built base for countering terrorism on the African continent.

No, he hasn't.

He and other MAGA scum will start whining about Biden retreating abroad.

US 'agree' to leave when kicked out. First time that's happened.

The US was told by the Philippines to get out of Subic Bay in 1992 and did so.

Ever wonder why these countries don't want to be "protected" by the US?

Then the American government gets stubborn about leaving. Finds endless excuses not to?

Iraq is still waiting for a complete departure. They never asked us in, in the first place.

We invaded them and killed 100s of thousands of people.

Still there.

Why?

Why?

How many billion dollars did they spend on that "embassy"?

#7 | Posted by REDIAL at 2024-04-21 03:51 PM | Reply

So the eff what? Billions of dollars= 100s of thousands of human lives, lost for nothing?

---- THAT.

I was mistaken. The 104 acre (largest in the world) US embassy complex in Baghdad only cost $750 Million.

Dude I did the math. If 400,000 People were killed that comes out to about $1850.00 per life lost.

Uncle Sam and the US taxpayers should just eat it and get the ---- out.

We've done enough damage to Iraq.

Dude I did the math.

I did some math too. With a current staff of 349 that comes to $2,148,997 per person working there.

Niger is no longer a democratic country. They don't want us be there fighting terrorists. Because the terrorists are now running that country.

So No. Actually I haven't. Because it's pretty rare. And the countries that don't want us well we don't actually want to help them either. Especially since we really can't afford it anymore.

We have a lot of friends that we have agreed to defend in the world. Those agreements are mutual agreements. Too many agreements actually.

Just so you know the United States is obligated on paper to defend 51 countries and more than 1.4 billion people. I think that is plenty for now don't you?

These people have all asked for and agreed to our defense and support. And actually it's more dangerous (and expensive) for us than it is for them because we can be drawn into conflicts that we may not want and cannot extract ourselves from.

Let's start there, and then we can go on to discuss the rest of your comment that looks to be based upon that assertion.

"Look, alls I am saying is,

We are the world now. Let's own it openly.
This subterfuge tasks me.
You are either with us,
for us, doing what we want,
or you get destroyed in your turn.
We're an empire now,
and we make our own reality."

to the tune of "We are the World" is hysterical to me.
