Absent zero-emissions tax credits implemented during the Biden administration, his company would not have made any profit during the first quarter.

In fact, Tesla would have posted a Q1 loss without the $595 million in EV tax credits, according to reporting by TechCrunch. Earnings figures released by Tesla showed $409 million in net quarterly profit, a brutal 71% plunge from a year ago. These figures follow Tesla's first-ever year-to-year sales decline. The company's stock price has also plummeted more than 50% since December.

Elon Musk, the chief executive of Tesla, said on Tuesday that China's halt on exports of certain magnets was affecting his plans to build humanoid robots, in the clearest signal yet that China's action is beginning to affect big American businesses," the New York Times reports.

As the reddit link says, Tesla is just a meme stock at this point. Relying upon the stupidity of clueless investors to prop up its value. Much like the crypto currencies Leon and Hair Furor keep pushing.

"At this point" lol.

It was always a meme stock.

More valuable than the entire car industry combined.

"More valuable than the entire car industry combined."

In a normal world, they would buy the other car industries and have a long-term viable business.

Like when AOL, worth basically nothing, bought Time Warner, worth billions.

But I guess then they wouldn't be a unicorn. Just a long-term viable business. Booooring!

And no that is not a reference to The Boring Company, which is supposed to be another unicorn and all the unicorns join together and form Voltron.

Because that's how the economy works now. The richest kid in history, playing with his toys, while he wishes migrants into the cornfield.

Like what? What did Tesla need? ICE parts? Transmission? Which company? Sure it could have gone the hybrid route, but none of you EarthDay types wanted anything to do with ICE.

Now you cheer the downfall of the only company making commercially successful "global saving vehicles". You look and sound pretty stupid.

Tesla is viable, it will be around for a long time. Not so sure about Ford, or GM.

Like when AOL, worth basically nothing, bought Time Warner, worth billions.

You don't understand the difference? It would be like AOL buying WesternUnion, or an acoustic coupler modem company.

The richest kid in history, playing with his toys, while he wishes migrants into the cornfield.

This is what I don't understand about American Billionaires, why haven't Gates, Buffet (richest do nothing in the history of man), Cuban, Larry Ellison, Steve jobs etc etc actually user their wealth to create a better planet. Musk is trying at least, I don't really like him personally, but business investment wise he's doing a hell of a job of increasing America's tech and future development. Starlink, incredible. Even TheBoringCompany, you can laugh but its an interesting idea. Hell it would be great if it was used to lower the cost of HSR development.

It was always a meme stock.

Perhaps, but most of these tech companies are punching way above their weight.

@#16 ... It's not a tech company. ...

Bingo!

Tesla is an automobile manufacturer.

And the sales plunged worldwide beside the CEO of Tesla has been on a different mission than assuring Tesla sales and profits for the past few months.

I am tempted to say, "secondarily" here, but I won't....

And Tesla now seems to have another problem ...

The CEO of Tesla is now associated with the far-right political parties in Europe and the United States.

That association may affect Tesla's prior core customer base, left-leaning people.

To the point that a few left-leaning individuals express their viewpoint in illegal ways, e.g. defacing Teslas.

Then I see articles like these ...

BYD's quarterly profit surges at fastest pace in nearly two years
www.reuters.com

... BYD's first-quarter profit leapt 100.4% from a year earlier, the fastest pace in nearly two years, as the Chinese electric vehicle giant extends its lead in its competitive home market after launching a smart EV price war. ...

--- and ---

BYD Earnings: Net Income Doubles, Racing Past Tesla In Latest Milestone
www.investors.com

... The actual net income easily topped Tesla's adjusted net income of $934 million. Tesla had long held a huge profitability edge over BYD, but that gap narrowed considerably in recent years. Tesla's net income was 388% larger than BYD's in 2022, 161% in 2023 and 53% last year.

It's notable that BYD passed Tesla on this key metric in the seasonally weak first quarter for Chinese EV sales. ...

BYD passed Tesla in revenue in Q3 and fully battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Q4. It's been the overall EV leader, including plug-in hybrids, for more than two years.

Late Tuesday, Tesla reported Q1 EPS dived 40% vs. a year earlier, far below lowered views. Revenue declined 9% to $19.3 billion. Core automotive margins excluding regulatory credits hit their lowest level since 2012. Excluding regulatory credits, Tesla had an operating loss. ...

This is because EV's pretty much suck. But it is nice that Democrats might now support pulling back on EV mandates and subsidies if they think it might hurt Musk.

#18 | Posted by BellRinger at 2025-04-25 08:59 PM | Reply

Republicans really are ignorant.

There are other EV manufacturers in America than just Tesla.

Elon Musk's greatest contribution to Tesla was getting billions of dollars from the government of California to massively expand its production.

#19 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-04-25 09:03 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

TSLA is now a meme stock. During the latest earnings call this week, in order to pump the stock, Musk once again made grand promises about upcoming revenue streams he KNOWS he can't deliver on:

- TSLA will have a MILLION robotaxis on the roads sometime next year. He promised exactly this in 2019

They don't even have self-driving software ready to go. Meanwhile, Waymo and others are already on the roads

- He will build these ONE MILLION robotaxis at the Austin Cybertruck plant

This is also a farcical concoction. The plant isn't capable of building a million Model Y's in a year. More like 5 years at capacity, if that

- He will build and sell hundreds of thousands of robots at $20-30,000 each. Again, ridiculous. Where's the market for those at that price and in those numbers.

Tesla sales are falling. Musk has destroyed the brand among the very customers he seeks. Rednecks drive pickups.

The ONLY reason they had any net revenues at all was because of the nearly $600,000,000 in carbon tax credits.

EV's are a niche vehicle. In the right set of circumstances they work fine for the consumer. Those cicumstances are pretty l8mited. Never mind that they are nowhere near as green as they ar3 purported as being when we look at carbon inputs needed to build them, the pollution due to tire particulates their excessive weight creates, the fact that their excessive weights increase fatalities in collisions especially where small, fuel-efficient ICE driven cars are involved.

I abhor the propaganda associated with EV's being green. Unless you're getting all of your power from wind and solar it's still a fossil burning vehicle. You just get the burning at the front end. Just not along the way. Just sayin

EVs are workable for most people in the cities and suburbs.

Most two car families should have a grocery getter EV, and a car for longer trips. The car might be a toy hauler.

@#14 ... EV's are a niche vehicle. In the right set of circumstances they work fine for the consumer. ...

I agree.

But Tesla seems to have created a company based upon those niche vehicles.

And, EVs are getting better.

CATL is introducing a new fast charging technology.

A 5-minute charge to go 320 miles. Chinese EV battery giant CATL says its tech is even better than Tesla-killer BYD's
finance.yahoo.com

... China's Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world's largest producer of electric vehicle batteries, has unveiled an upgraded battery it says promises an even longer range than rival BYD's cutting-edge technology.

Both tech giants now boast they have batteries that can charge EVs in as little as five minutes. But on Monday, CATL upped the ante by announcing that its new Shenxing battery has a range of 320 miles, about 70 miles longer than BYD's stated range of 250 miles. By comparison, Tesla's Superchargers lag way behind by delivering 200 miles of range in a 15-minute charge. ...

Like the early autos that replaced horse buggies back in the day, EVs are improving.

One aspect I wonder about ...

With the scientific brain drain in the US that Pres Trump's policies seem to be encouraging, will the US EV manufacturers be able to keep up?

#29 | Posted by LampLighter at 2025-04-25 09:54 PM | Reply

Anyhoo, everything Musk has been promising shareholders has been "just around the corner" according to Musk. He's a lot like Trump. Lots of empty promises, very little results.

It's the same story year after year.

And in major American cities, where the bulk of Tesla robotaxis would operate, Musk is no longer respected after turning fascist. There are other options for riders ranging from the already operating, self-driving Waymo taxis to Uber and Lyft. People aren't going to pay a premium to ride in a Model Y when there are other options already available that are safer. And aren't built by fascist loving Ketamine addicts.

Musk will eventually roll out a handful of Tesla robotaxis in small pilot programs and declare it a success. Since, as LAMPLIGHTER pointed out above, the lowered self-driving standards Musk is trying to implement means questionable safety and accidents.

Anyway, Tesla is a meme stock. There's no way he'll ever deliver the massive promises he's made shareholders about (always) future revenue streams that can't logically become reality.

A million Tesla taxis? Millions buying $30,000 robots? I have a bridge to sell you ...
