Trump announces he's taking over the DC police department to rescue the city from "crime, bloodshed, and bedlam." Violent crime in DC reached a 30 year low in 2024 and is down sharply again this year.

But that's not what we are seeing.

We're seeing crime at lowest rates in 30 years.

The crime rate drop is also happening nationally.

The spike during the pandemic (which didn't come close to touching historical rates) was also national.

This line of argument is an excuse, nothing more nothing less.

The fact of the matter is the federalization of DC is a power grab predicated on a paper thin excuse.

Using per capita crime rates in a commuter city like DC is really misleading. The DC population doubles during the day, so to be fair, you have to cut the per capita rate in half when comparing it to other cities. www.census.gov
