Chris Madel (R) made a stunning exit from the Minnesota governor's race, saying he cannot support the national GOP's "stated retribution on the citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so," the Minnesota Star Tribune reports. Said Madel: "United States citizens, particularly those of color, live in fear. United States citizens are carrying papers to prove their citizenship. That's wrong."

What a rino.

While true, Chris Madel has to be willing to take the risk of death threats, bombs in his car, arsonists targeting his home ect ect.

I wouldn't cross MAGA right now, not with their current predilection to violence and state terror.

Republican Lawmakers Are Leaving Office Out Of Fear Of The Party's Base, Report Claims: 'I'd Rather My House Not Get Firebombed'

The lawmaker told the outlet he is leaving office but not out of fear of retaliation from Trump, but political violence. "I'd rather my house not get firebombed," the lawmaker said.
The outlet noted that fears are not far-fetched given the wave of political violence that has taken place over the past years. Indiana Republicans have faced "swatting" incidents for not endorsing the redistricting plan.
Another has reported a bomb threat and other forms of harassment, including receiving pizza deliveries they had not ordered to show them their address was not private. Some others have not been made public.

ICE Shootings Are Freaking Out the GOP. They're Afraid to Tell Trump.
www.politico.com

... To cover the Republican Party in the age of President Donald Trump requires a grasp of cryptology.

Because of the unflinching personal loyalty he demands, and punishment he'll administer on public dissenters, leading GOP officials speak in rhetorical code.

And in the aftermath of the second killing by federal agents of a protester in Minnesota, there's been a stream of statements, comments and sound bites from party lawmakers that beg for translation.

Before we get to the private and public messages being transmitted, however, a word on what top Republicans actually believe about what has become a deepening crisis for the White House, based on my conversations over the last two days.

They are concerned more protests to the bloodshed may beget additional incidents, have little faith in DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and, from a raw political standpoint, worry the party has squandered the best issues it had when voters were otherwise frustrated with the cost of living: the border and public order.

Immigration, broadly, as one veteran senator granted anonymity to speak candidly told me over the weekend, is for the GOP what health care is for Democrats -- a "home game."

Yet with viral images of Americans being shot in broad daylight replacing migrants stampeding across the country's border, that advantage is quickly dissipating.

So what are Republican elected officials doing to address what could prove calamitous, for the country and their political fortunes? ...

ready for that nuance part snoofy?

I was never a member of either party, My position is that no party should have any base or pre counted votes. If either party wants me to vote for it, present a platform I can back. They consistently do not. I live in a hard blue state, so I vote 3rd party in an effort to grow the % of people voting for neither. I also know this doesn't impact the outcome of the election.

This guy however is part of the party. Therefore should be working from the inside to do exactly what others like me are looking for, a platform we can support. Dropping out is the antithesis of what he should be doing if he wants to remain in politics and the R party. If he's going to change parties, that's another story.

Notice how I never called him a -----... My point was that just quitting was not going to make change, in fact he left a vacuum for someone to step into to do more of what he was against potentially.

Now to get this right, I'm a good stepping Nazi for my posts... but, I'm also wrong if I criticize the republicans too. P

Okay. Sure. Got any ideas on what would get Republicans to change?

"Dropping out is the antithesis of what he should be doing if he wants to remain in politics and the R party."

You never joined a party and now you're telling people who did they have to live up to your expectations of them?

You blame this guy for quitting his team, but you never even joined one. Who's the real loser here, the guy who tried and didn't like it or the guy who never even tried?

You sound like the kind of guy who nods silently in approval when some ------- says "I didn't leave the Democrat Party, the Democrats left me."

Well, the Republican Party left this guy.

Or maybe you think Republicans have always been this racist, and this guy was just too white bread to notice until ICE started calling his black constituents the N word.

Curious which of those describes your thinking better.

#29 | Posted by snoofy at 2026-01-27 11:55 AM | Reply

I don't know that I see it differently, and I don't really know this guys history or stance on issues. I have to assume that he's not into the fascists agenda though, and dropping out surely won't change things.

I wish I had the magic bullet and could say "we need to do x to achieve y"... But the right is so far right, and the left is so far left that we are stuck in a self feeding downward spiral of each party bringing out more and more extreme versions of their leaders to satiate the base.

The only way forward is for the moderate majority to stop supporting the parties. An R or D will still win the Presidency next go 'round, but it should be with minimal turnout. The parties need to get the message we don't like either platform and you need to change.

I think you have to assume he's lost his political appetite.

"But the right is so far right, and the left is so far left that we are stuck in a self feeding downward spiral....."

No question the right has moved more to the right. But the left? I don't see policies that indicate that.

Running a black woman for president? Not very long ago, that would have been labeled an "extreme left" move.....but the policies don't reflect that, IMO.

You're free to show examples, however.

#34 | Posted by eberly at 2026-01-27 02:36 PM | Reply

#33 I know you don't think that a many of the policies the left backs is 'more left' than they used to be... But they got Trump elected. If you can step back from the state of politics, and take a hard look at the fact that people preferred HIM over the lefts policies you'd possibly see it. I don't mean all the left, I mean the extremes have gotten more extreme. The problem is they have gotten more vocal, and therefore garner more attention/blame than their parties deserve. I think the far left has been more successful at being 'heard' and skew a lot of peoples perception of the left as being more left than they are on the whole. But perception is king.

#35 | Posted by kwrx25

I can't imagine you can identify any "extremes" on the left.
EXCEPT FOR
Trans people existing and demanding to be given the same rights that black people and women and gays had to fight for.

What's really changed is these people are now routinely demonized by the right-wing media. Their existence hasn't changed, their demands haven't ever changed, and it's the same demands women, blacks, and gays used to have.

Maybe you think it's a "left wing phenomenon" that there are more openly trans people than when we were kids. Hey, there's more openly gay people than when we were kids too. Is that the result of leftism or is that a nation centering itself around the reality that gay people exist and gay people's existence is only a left vs right issue because the right wants gays to be second class citizens.

I think right-wing propaganda painting the left policies as harmful to America could have done that.

The actual policies of the left don't harm America, and the reason I know that's the case is you can't name any left policies that harmed America.

I can't name any policies that you would agree harmed America, because you refuse to look at anything objectively. If it's left you agree, and if it didn't turn out well it was something else's fault, it could never be the policy. So why would I try?

"I can't name any policies that you would agree harmed America, because you refuse to look at anything objectively."

I look at things pretty objectively. I didn't think Hillary or Kamala or any woman could win, for example.

You could at least try to name a liberal policy that hurt America, and of course you'll be expected to show how the Republican fix has actually made things better.

Your non-answer reinforces my earlier answer being pretty accurate here: You're referring to right-wing propaganda painting the left policies as harmful to America, and that's why you don't want to name them, because you know most of that stuff will get torn down by an informed person.

#44 | Posted by snoofy at 2026-01-27 08:15 PM | Reply

We are going to disagree on the effectiveness of some left policies, and that some of their unimplemented platform points being good or bad for the country, and if they have skewed more progressive from center left. It's a useless exercise. However I can concede the R's responses have not been any better.

On the topic though, I do feel that the majority of the moderates in the country feel that the lefts policies have become much more progressive and that the litmus test used by the left has become more extreme. You disagree, that's what makes the world go 'round.

Tariffs.
