President Donald Trump on Friday said he will issue an executive order "shortly" laying out the "legal reasons" for national voter-identification requirements.

Trump, in posts late Friday to Truth Social, said he wants voter-ID laws implemented for the 2026 midterm elections, even though legislation mandating them appears poised to stall in Congress.

"Trump threatens to impose photo ID for voters for midterm elections

President insists he will also restrict mail-in voting, even if Congress fails to pass the Save America Act

"There will be Voter I.D. for the Midterm Elections, whether approved by Congress or not!" Trump posted in one of a series of missives sent while onboard Air Force One on Friday afternoon after speaking to troops at Fort Bragg.

"Also, the People of our Country are insisting on Citizenship, and No Mail-In Ballots, with exceptions for Military, Disability, Illness, or Travel," the president added, falsely, since there is no popular majority for banning vote by mail.

In fact, polling conducted last year showed the exact opposite: 58% of Americans favor allowing any voter to cast their ballot by mail if they want to.

Trump's efforts to impose voter ID requirements are likely to face immediate legal challenges, as the US constitution leaves the conduct of elections to the states."

Pres Trump has seen the polls.

Now he is reacting to those polls.

Instead of acting for the People he should be serving, he seems to be acting only in his own self-interests.

So true. He can't afford to have a clean, legal election that it looks like he could well lose.

That's not what Gangster Bosses do. They have the troops hit the matrasses in Blue Cities and take over the Elections.

It's hard to see how an Executive Order by the President has any authority over how the several States conduct their elections. The Constitution is pretty clear on this.

But I suspect Trump will find willing collaborators among the Republican Governor to give teeth to his toothless order, especially in the South.

Lewzer quotes:

"Why Is @BarackObama constantly issuing executive orders that are major power grabs of authority?"

"The country wasn't based on executive orders,"

"Right now, Obama goes around signing executive orders. He can't even get along with the Democrats, and he goes around signing all these executive orders. It's a basic disaster. You can't do it."

For those keeping score, Lewzer has now signed 459.

So we should expect to see righties flooding this thread with all sorts of protests against this blatantly unconstitutional oath, right?

OK, I would like to proffer.

I am not against Voter ID to vote. Here in Connecticut I have have to show identification for decades in order to cast my vote(s).

My concern on this current issue is --- what are the hurdles that Pres trump is trying to put into place to prevent legal voters from being able to obtain the ID needed to be able to vote?

imo, that is the crux of this issue.

U.S. Appeals Court Strikes Down North Carolina's Voter ID Law (2016)
www.npr.org

...The appeals court noted that the North Carolina Legislature "requested data on the use, by race, of a number of voting practices" -- then, data in hand, "enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways, all of which disproportionately affected African Americans."

The changes to the voting process "target African Americans with almost surgical precision," the circuit court wrote, and "impose cures for problems that did not exist."

The appeals court suggested that the motivation was fundamentally political -- a Republican legislature attempting to secure its power by blocking votes from a population likely to vote for Democrats....

Georgia's GOP House Speaker says vote-by-mail system would be 'devastating to Republicans' (April 2020)

..."... a multitude of reasons why vote by mail in my view is not acceptable," [Georgia state House Speaker David] Ralston went on, before adding "the president said it best, this will be extremely devastating to Republicans and conservatives in Georgia." ...

"The things they had in there were crazy. They had things, levels of voting that if you ever agreed to, you would never have a Republican elected in this country again," [fmr Pres] Trump said...
